With one week left until the spring game I thought it would be nice to see the attendance at the spring game of other universities.  After seeing the numbers of some of these big name schools I feel confident that we have a good channce to have the highest attendance this year.

I will be adding more schools as I find there attendance numbers.  If any of you know feel free to add it in the comment section, and I will add it to the list.

scUM spring game estimated by the Detroit Free Press at 25,000

M Man's picture

I suppose 25,000 might be an okay estimate.  That would have been my number, if I had to pick one.  I guess we blame "the weather" for the poor turnout.  As of 6 am this morning, we weren't sure if there would be a game due to weather.

Still, I give our athletic department good marks for putting together a well-programmed day, and poor marks to the fans for not turning out to see it.  Actually, the fans might have known something since the Spring Game was dull, although the Lacrosse game was very good.

You guys had a very nice contingent of scarlet-clad fans to cheer on the Buckeyes LAX squad; I wonder if any of them got there in time to see the Michigan spring game?  What team does a self-respecting Buckeye root for, when Michigan plays Michigan, and you are in the stadium?  You can't root for Michigan, or Michigan.  You can't root for the proverbial asteroid to hit the stadium because you are there.  And today you couldn't even root for Denard to tear an ACL because he barely played.

I have a feeling that 11W will supply a myriad of creative answers that I cannot even imagine.

Congrats to OSU LAX on a very good game.

BuckeyeVet's picture

Hey M Man, how about these things to root for -

1. Since its UM vs UM, how about a 0 - 0 tie?

2. Said proverbial (small)asteroid destroys both the 1st team offense & defense, and entire coaching staff on the 1 yard line on the far end of the stadium from me. I only get a flesh wound.

3. Denard gets hurt on the sidelines, a la Joe Pa's torn ACL, due to a player crashing into him on the sidelines.

4. The OSU LAX team changes after their game to Appalachian State jerseys and charges the field, sticks waving. Game ends immediately.

That's the best I can come up with in less than 5 min.

lol.

It sounds like a Bruce Willis movie.  If it were MSU, it would be a Vin Diesel movie.

That is a trick question ... why would we give a shit?

We'll beat 78,000 unless the weather is shit.  Like it was today.  Weather channel 10 day - shows Few Showers and 62 for next Saturday.  That's still far out and can change.

Class of 2010.

Menexenus's picture

I think this is unlikely.  Alabama got 78,000 because they are the national champions.  And because it's Alabama (what *else* are they going to do)?  Even with excitement/curiosity about our new coach, I think there's very little chance that more than 78,000 will show up to watch what is really just a glorified football practice.  (I'll be there, of course, but that's because I'm obsessed.)

Real fans stay for Carmen.

Triv's picture

You do realize OSU has the Spring Game record for attendance currently right? We hit 90,000+ either last year or the year before (think it was 2 years ago). While I'm not sure we get there again, 78,000 is VERY realistic if not a little low

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

Colin's picture

It was 3 years ago now, it was also 85 degrees and sunny. The next year I think we got 60,000 and the weather was crap. This year, with Urban Meyer and all the hype....78,000 should be nothing.

Menexenus's picture

Yep, you guys were right and I was wrong.  Shows what I know...

Seemed so much more than that, didn't it?  I'd never been to one or seen one.  *blush*

If the weather is like it is today, I'm thinking somewhere in the low-mid 80,000s...82-85,000.  Urban Meyer is the other key here.

Class of 2010.

Pitt...that's what you get for having it in a high school stadium. I'm actually surprised with the lower Bama turnout, relatively speaking, they had like 90,000+ last year. No rain and we'll beat it. Great weather and we'll reset the record.

Rational MFAN's picture

I definitely think the weather played a big part, the report yesterday about it possibly being cancelled kind of threw everybody off. I know after I heard that I decided not to go.

Kind of glad I did not go. It only lasted for a hour and a half, Denard I believe only played one drive and the play calling was fairly simple. ( As I would expect it to be) But you should always expect 50-55 thousand at a Michigan spring game, weather definitely played a role.

Its a simple decsion...BE A MAN and get there. Opportunity to witness the spark that lights OSU footballs new era of dominance

I'm not a man, but dammit, weather won't stop me!

Handicap parking has to be fairly close to the stadium entrance for me to be able to go. My dad wants to go but has RA and can't walk any distance to speak of. He could and would make himself walk a quarter mile to see the Buckeyes as he lives for the Bucks but that would be his max. Would that distance be possible from H parking to seats? If anyone has a guess it would be appreciated.

willshire58's picture

The past couple of years handicapped parking has been in the lots that surround the 'Shoe for the spring game. My grandfather has a myriad of back and hip problems so it works out great. I'm sure the athletic department will issue something about it, or if not I would give them a call to ask about it.

Man of Scarlet and Gray's picture

@Fortmeyer they have handicap shuttles to the stadium from the H parking spaces if that helps, also it's 15 dollars to park there and the spots are located on just off lane avenue in the St. John arena lot or the Lane avenue parking garage. Hope you guys can make it out there man and cheer on our bucks!

Thank you for the info and we are going to try to get there if that's the case. It would help him to go and enjoy the day. Thanks again.

Stanford at 5K? USC at 15K? I mean I know its spring football but surely more than 15,000 people in Los Angeles care about USC football enough to go see their 'glorified scrimmage'

William's picture

I think a 3 years ago someone mentioned to Matt Barkley about the size of our Spring Game that year, which was around 95,000 and how it was much larger than USC's Spring Game and his response was it's California, there's a lot more for us to do out here than watch football.

The offseason begins when your season ends. Even then there are no days off.

SPreston2001's picture

Yeah its looking like rain for Saturday which freakin sucks! Its seems like every year it rains on the Spring Game lol.

FortMeyer's picture

They are showing 70% chance of rain for Saturday. Seeing that it is Tuesday it is more than likely that it will not be the case by Saturday and the forecast will change. Have to wait until Thursday to get anything close to an accurate look at Saturday. For years the family business has relied on weather forecasts and nine times out of ten extended forecasts are wrong. Never go out any farther than two days ahead and that isn't always correct. Hope this is not the one time its right.

I am taking my 4 year old rain of shine. I am excited for her first trip to the shoe. If she cries about the weather I will tell her this is FOOTBALL WEATHER and to man up.

This will be a test run to see if I can take her to a real game but I know she is going to love the band/team coming out.

tennbuckeye19's picture

Is Urban planning on wearing camoflouge and combat boots for the Spring Game this year?

FortMeyer's picture

Hah! Completely understand, but please tell your four year old daughter to "man up" in a very quiet, caring, and loving voice as I could just see someone sitting behind you calling the authorities on "some crazy man yelling at his daughter to man up" at the football game. Just saying it could happen.

I would be surprised if it wasn't the whole of the south stands, or at least a good portion, since those are normal student seats.

Plus admission for kids under 6 is free.... I think we might have a full house saturday  :)

Weather Channel has chance of rain down to 20% for Saturday.  Too bad it's supposed to be 50's and cloudy instead of the weather today.

Does anyone know if the spring game will be shown on the BTN??

Yes there are two Buckeyes in Ann arbor on this site!
