Fellow Buckeyes, the first game is so close!  We're finally going to kick off the 2013 season, a year in which we go undefeated...again...and bring home the National Championship.  In that spirit, I offer this poem...

"Game Week"

 Kenneth Nichols

Sunday is for catching up on web sites, blogs and podcasts.

Where are we in the polls? And will Coach Hoke's offensive mods last?

On Monday, all our thoughts are clear from two days of digestion:

The perfect day for homers to allow themselves confessions.

Now, Tuesday is before the hump; the wait can be quite daunting.

So call a Wolverine and share some light, good-natured taunting.

On Wednesday's when we start to get excited for the game

We look up our opponent and put faces with the names.

It's Thursday?  Time to wash your jersey and decide which sports bar's best.

(Or to vacuum up the living room for your Buckeye faithful guests.)

Come Friday, it's Skull Session Time! Let’s prep and feel the hype;

We hit Eleven Warriors 'til we're too tired to type.

On Saturday, the Scarlet and Gray parade down High and Neil.

We’ll crush the opposition with our hard work, joy and zeal.

Friends, we all get pumped by those hype videos.  Well, poetry also has a long history of getting people pumped.  What is a halftime speech but a few minutes of free verse?  Here's an example we all remember:

Tress layin' it down.

Why not share some of your own rhymes and lines to help others get psyched for kickoff?

My favorite line from the poem. I always get excited to do tasks to get prepared for Buckeye games.

First game of the year, and I'm proud to admit,
That that beautiful structure on the olentangy -- I'll be in it,
to watch the Buckeyes take on Buffalo, which I'm sure will excite,
as we await for our offense and speed to ignite,
"Burners for days" Coach Coombs will scream
As he methodically plots the annihilation
of offensive schemes
And we'll hoot and we'll holler as we'll surely prevail
Because it's buffalo, realistically, and they're only there for the sale.
But the games will continue, and we'll try and keep pace,
As Dontre, and Jalin, and Hall move to race
Not many games will matter, some will be close
For instance one in particular Chicago will host
But the last of them all (well kinda, okay)
Will be played in November on a grand fall day
When Sun (LOL) and Scarlet will move to meet
And two teams of men dare to compete
The Buckeyes will Hail on this spectacular day
And bring us to the moment in which we all will say,
"We'll play them again, in the championship with ease.
In fact, do as you wish -- Bring as you please.
Indy is a stopping point, a fairly close ride,
You know what we're after, we're after the Tide.
We've a point to prove, and a few points to give,
Down with the SEC, and now the B1G shall live.
Actually, forget it -- The rest of them suck,
No love shall be given, unless you're a Buck."

September Walk.

Familiar sights befall his eyes, gazing out on autumn skies,
pastels across the horizon float, a sunset plays it's final note,
leafs are crisp and earthly bound, huddled together on cooling ground.
A jacket zipped with pocket ripped, otherwise quite nondescript,
hugs a boy while walking slow, dad has son's hand in streetlight's glow.
He's felt the warmth of summer slip, watched as it lost it's sizzling grip,
feels a chill, though not surprised, knows the seasons have compromised.
Fighting, to hold back a tear, this is his favorite time of year.
All that was new is old again, all that he loves he'll share with him.
Come this winter and season's end they'll both wait till next year when they walk again.

Took a walk after work tonight with the boy.  The excitement of the upcoming football season combined with excitement of sharing future seasons and walks like the one we took tonight with him gave me some inspiration.   I know it's not September yet, and the weather hasn't really changed that much but this was more of an image of a few years from now that I'm trying to picture and then describe.  Not really rah-rah material but this is what's psyching me up for this and future seasons.  A new football buddy.

I know there's a game Saturday, and my ass will be there.

Really good poems. Thanks guys.

Bury me in my away jersey, with my buckeye blanket. A diehard who died young. Rip dad.

How about a crowd sourced rap? For starters that can be added to both before and after, a seed...
...
Got hit by Shazier and blew a snot bubble
that was visible all the way from ‘da Hubble
Telescope
They asked him his name and he said kaleidoscope

What awesome contributions!  And I love the idea of a crowdsourced rap.  Here's a cool old school beat:

Seein shapes for days, offense moving in mysterious ways
Smooth jazz playin you on extra points -- goin for 2 sure pays
They mad cause we rushin' them, no huddle makes you fuss again
You mistaken when you think you can catch Hall -- yea you must've been...
