Brewster and Simon Two to Watch

Mike Brewster and John Simon were the two Buckeyes represented on the conference's Watch List which came out this morning. See the official release below:

July 28, 2011

CHICAGO - The Big Ten Conference released its inaugural Legends Division and Leaders Division Players to Watch list today and two Ohio State Buckeyes are among the 12 players selected by a media panel.

Senior All-American center Michael Brewster and junior defensive lineman John Simon were named to the Leaders Division list, a list that includes tie vote totals. The pair are joined by Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase, Indiana receiver Damario Belcher, Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti and Wisconsin running backs Montee Ball aned James White.

The Legends watch list is comprised of Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins, Nebraska defensive tackle Jared Crick and linebacker Lavonte David, and Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa.

Kyle Dodson Commits To Wisconsin

Kyle Dodson grew up an Ohio State fan from Cleveland and thought his dream was to grow up and play for the Buckeyes one day. That was until he visited Wisconsin.

"Growing up I always rooted for the Buckeyes because where I'm from everybody roots for them and hates Michigan", Dodson said. "But then as I started to get recruited, my grandma told me to really take a look at other schools besides Ohio State to make sure I was making the right decision and the best fit for me".

That right decision apparently was to take his talents to Madison, Wisconsin where he committed to Bret Bielema and the Wisconsin Badgers earlier this evening. The commitment came just 24 hours after receiving the coveted OSU offer that was on hold as the Buckeye staff awaited a qualifying ACT score. Dodson said getting the OSU offer last night "made things much harder" but he chose the Badgers because "it just felt right and I think they had the best tools to help me fulfill my lifelong dream of playing in the NFL".

The timing was certainly weird for a decision to commit to UW, as things appeared to be swinging to the Scarlet and Gray with Luke Fickell finally giving Dodson an official offer. The Bucks had been waiting to extend a scholarship to the 6-6/310 offensive lineman per a deal Jim Tressel made with the Cleveland Heights standout that stated that he would get an offer once he had a qualifying ACT score.

Many Buckeye fans think "slow playing" Dodson like that had an effect on his decision, but Kyle begged to differ, stating " At first I was kind of offended and confused as to why they weren't offering, but as things went on, I started to understand why Coach Tressel was doing things this way. I knew Coach Tressel wouldn't go back on the deal and that I had a scholarship as long as I qualified. That didn't have an effect on my decision."

As for the reason he felt today was the right day to commit to Wisconsin, Dodson said that he "didn't have time to drags things out because a lot of kids were committing earlier and he didn't want to lose his spot". He said he was pretty sure his decision was final, stating that "when you're committed, you're committed" , but also did go on to say that "it ain't over till it's over".

Dodson did want to keep things as classy as possible and spoke to OSU coach Taver Johnson this evening and also has plans to call Jim Bollman and the rest of the staff tomorrow. He said Johnson had a lot of class and told him that he would always be there for him regardless of his decision to attend Wisconsin.

On the other side of things, Dodson also spoke to his new coach Bret Bielema and played a little trick on him. When Kyle got on the phone with the coach he made it seem like he was committing elsewhere before pulling a 180 and pledging to the Badgers. The news of the commitment invoked a lot of screaming and yelling up north in Madison.

Finally, when asked if the situation had any effect on his decision at all, Dodson said it had some impact, but wasn't a deciding factor. He said he "loved Coach Tressel and thinks he is a great man", but likes Luke Fickell and the new staff a lot, although was uncertain of their future after this year. The instability and uncertainty may have played a minor role, but at the end of the day it seems he was just more comfortable heading up to Wisconsin.

Losing a player of Dodson's magnitude hurts a lot, especially since he is in state, but I must say he was very classy about the whole thing. It may look bad on the surface to get the "offer you have been waiting for" and commit to a rival less than a day later, but it appears after talking to Dodson that he is just making the decision he feels is best for him.

He did have one thing he wanted me to relay to Buckeye fans though:

"I hope you understand I made the decision that was best for me and that one day you can welcome me back with open arms, as it is my dream to play for the Browns. I'm not LeBron!"

Chris Carter Jr. Signs With OSU

After some potential legal troubles, Cleveland JFK OL Chris Carter has finally signed his NLOI with Ohio State. Below is a press release from the school:

Carter Signs With Ohio State Football
Cleveland native 24th to join Buckeye recruiting class

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Chris Carter, an offensive lineman from John F. Kennedy High School in Cleveland, Ohio, has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend The Ohio State University.

A 6-6, 350-lb. offensive guard who led Cleveland’s Kennedy High into the Division II playoffs, he was selected as the Senate League’s Most Valuable Player while playing for Coach Scott Wodtly.  A first team all-Senate League, all-region, and second team all-Ohio honoree, he was named to the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s  Top 20. Carter was also a letterman in weightlifting and track and field.

The student government president at Kennedy, and a member of the Army JROTC, peer tutoring program, 100 Kennedy Men, and Students of Promise, he is the son of Christopher and Arnetress Carter.

“We are excited Chris will be a Buckeye,” says Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel. “He has had a great support system at home, as well as at his high school with the likes of his principal Maryum Sims, his athletic director Velma Pettiegrew, and his coach Scott Wodtly. They truly believe that Chris will have great success on and off the field at Ohio State.”

The Buckeyes begin spring practice March 31. The football spring game is April 23 at Ohio Stadium. For updated information on Ohio State football, go to www.OhioStateBuckeyes.com.

Under Armour Game Tonight

The UA All-American game is tonight at 7PM on ESPN. Current OSU commits QB Braxton Miller, DE Steve Miller, and LB Ryan Shazier are participating. Potential future Buckeyes at the game are DB Doran Grant, DB Jabari Gorman, ATH Darius Jennings (Won't play-injury), WR Ja'Juan Story, LB James Vaughters (if Harbaugh leaves), and DE Jadeveon Clowney.

Grant and Gorman will announce during the game tonight. I have a good feeling Doran Grant will pick the Buckeyes but Gorman is really a toss-up. I think he is down to Florida and OSU. He really wants to be a Buckeye, but is getting a lot of family pressure to stay in state. I'm going to go with the Gators here, but the Bucks could definitely be picking up two awesome corners tonight (much needed!).

Here are the rosters for the game. Also a bonus is that Mike Ditka will be coaching!

Marcus Freeman to be Named LB Coach at KSU

I just got word from a trusted source that Marcus Freeman got the linebackers coaching job at Kent State. Freeman played at OSU from 2004-2009 and was part of a great linebacker duo along with James Laurinaitis. Freeman had a tango with the NFL as part of the Bills and texans, but had to retire prematurely due to an irregular heart beat. Freeman returned to Ohio State upon retiring to finish up his Master's Degree in Sport Management. During that time (last spring to this fall) he served as the defensive quality control coach for OSU and has done a great job for Jim Tressel this season. Freeman was offered a position on Darell Hazell's staff and accepted it earlier today.

Best of luck to Freeman on his first full-time coaching position at the division 1 level. Who knows, maybe one day he'll be back in Columbus as linebackers coach, defensive coordinator, or maybe even head coach one day? You never know, but what we do know is that the OSU coaching tree continues to branch out further every year.

Shazier Decommits from Florida

LB Ryan Shazier has decommitted from Florida today after his official visits to LSU last weekend and Ohio State this weekend. He will be making his announcement later at his graduation party in the Miami area and will choose between the Bucks and Tigers.

Being that all signs pointed to this being a Gator-OSU battle after Urban Meyer resigned, expect Shazier to pick the good guys tonight. This would be a huge coup for OSU, as Shazier is a great player and will enroll early, along with his high school teammate and Buckeye commit, Jeremy Cash. He will most likely play the WILL linebacker position for OSU, but with his athleticism, I can eventually see him moving to the LB/DE hybrid LEO position later on in his career, a la Thaddeus Gibson.

Stay tuned later for the announcement from Shazier.

Addendum To Yesterday's Recruiting Update

As an add on to yesterday's recruiting notebook, news came out that the Buckeyes have offered Cumming, GA long-snapper, Bryce Haynes. Haynes holds offers from UNC, Arkansas, and Utah State and is considered the nation's top at his position. The Bucks usually don't offer schollies to long snappers, so this kid must be good. With Jake McQuaide graduating, the position is up in the air next year, and don't undervalue it's importance. Haynes will take a visit to OSU on December 17th and don't be surprised if he commits while in Columbus.

Another player to watch is Chicago Simeon OL Chris Bryant. Bryant currently favors Michigan over Arizona, Stanford, Illinois, Minnesota, Kansas, and others, but an offer from OSU could change things. Dick Tressel has been to Chicago to visit Bryant and is expected back next week. Bill Kurelic also reported the coaches called him while he was on his visit to Arizona last week. Look for Bryant to potentially get an offer, a move that will help in recruiting his junior teammate, Jordan Diamond. Diamond is regarded as one of the top offensive linemen in the class of 2012 and has the Buckeyes high on his list of consideration.

Amir Williams Officially In The Fold

The last 24 hours have been good to the basketball Buckeyes, but things got even better today, as Amir Williams has signed a national letter of intent with Ohio State. Williams, a 6-10/220 center from Detroit Country Day School, became the fifth member of the class of 2011, joining LaQuinton Ross, Shannon Scott, Sam Thompson, and fellow Michigaan native, Trey McDonald.

Thad Five Part II is now complete and ends with a bang. The #2 ranked center and top 50 player in the nation chose OSU over Florida, but also had Michigan, Purdue, and DePaul in his final five. With Dallas Lauderdale graduating and Jared Sullingerlikely going to the NBA after this season (especially if he keeps up his current play), Williams was a must-get for the staff in their quest to fill out the expected departure in the front court. Williams and McDonald will team up with Evan Ravenel and DeShaun Thomas (hopefully) to provide Thad Matta with some grunt work in the paint next season.

This is a great day to be a Buckeye basketball fan, and imagine how much better things could get if Sullinger and company stay around for another year. Thad Matta continues to prove he belongs in elite company when discussing college basketball coaches, as he brings yet another great recruiting class into Columbus next season.

Mike Adams Separates His Shoulder

Wondering what happened on the play where Mike Adams almost let Terrelle Pryor's knee get blown out against EMU? Well apparently Big Mike separated his shoulder against EMU and was defenseless on the play, according to Terrelle Pryor's Wednesday press conference. That certainly explains a lot and it seems Adams is fine now and ready to go for Illinois, but why didn't the staff put in Andy Miller immediately following the play? Adams, when healthy, might be the most important person in making sure Terrelle Pryor can operate like he is capable of, so it's really important we take care of big #75.

Other notes from the press conference, which also included Darrell Hazell and Luke Fickell were that Jake Stoneburner didn't practice today, but Dorian Bell and Travis Howard did. Howard is important as we saw Corey Brown and Dominic Clarke aren't capable of being a #3 corner, while Bell is extremely talented, and for now helps big time on special teams. Reid Fragel will play a lot Saturday regardless, but if Stoneburner can't go expect him to get the start.

Warren Ball is a HUGE Commit

Columbus St. Francis DeSales RB Warren Ball committed to OSU today. It was the first day juniors could receive offers in writing and Ball wasted no time telling Jim Tressel he wanted in. This is a huge get for the Bucks as Ball, at 6-1/200, is a big, physical runner who has a non-stop motor and has the passion to play for Ohio State. This is the type of kid you want on your team and he will add even more depth at RB next year behind Herron, Berry, Hall, Hyde, and Smith.

I'm really excited to have this kid in the fold, as he could be the #1 player in Ohio when it's all said and done. The 2012 Ohio HS football class is unreal and the staff is already off to a great start with Ball and Perry. Next up we need to concentrate on getting the guys in the trenches, as well as some of the slick wide outs and d-backs. Out of state talent is on the back burner for the junior class.
