Urban Meyer Statement

Here is Coach Meyer's statement, just released from OSU:

“I was pleased to take part in a productive, regularly scheduled meeting of the Big Ten Conference coaches today in Chicago. We had an opportunity to discuss a number of issues with each other and conference staff, including those that have arisen this week. It should be noted that my coaching staff is in full compliance with our recruiting efforts, and no one on this staff did anything illegal or unethical. We will continue to comply with NCAA rules and recruit with relentless effort, especially the great state of Ohio. “I want to thank Commissioner Delany for his insight and leadership, and at this point we all look forward to moving past this week and getting ready for the start of spring football.”

Pryor 2008 vs Miller 2011 Final

Player Comp Att Comp % Yards TD INT YPA YPC QB RTG RUSH YDS AVG TD Team Overall Record
Miller (12 games) 85 157 54.1% 1,159 13 4 7.38 13.8 138.4 159 715 4.5 7 6-7
Pryor (12 games) 95 152 62.5% 1,245 12 4 8.19 13.11 152.1 124 553 4.46 6 10-2
Pryor (13 games) 100 165 60.6% 1,311 12 4 7.95 13.11 146.5 139 631 4.54 6 10-3

I'd say overall, things look pretty similar, subtracting the records. The OSU staff put TP in a better position to make throws he was capable of making in 2008 compared to BM in 2011, which is why I think you see the more yards, higher YPA, higher QBR, and less rushes through 12 games.

Pryor had a better supporting cast (as well as coach) and it clearly shows through the records and the stats. Things will go up for Miller and I think his second year and third year wil bothl be better than Pryor's, which is scary, because we are talking about a guy who would have broke almost all OSU QB records and has these awards on his list:

Awards and honors
2007 Hall Trophy (U.S. Army Player of the Year)
2007 PARADE National Player of the Year and All-American
2008 Pete Dawkins Trophy (U.S. Army All-American Bowl MVP)
2008 U.S. Army All-American MVP
2008 Big Ten Freshman of the Year (coaches)
2008 All-Big Ten Honorable Mention (media)
2009 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Sportsmanship Award
2009 Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year
2009 All-Big Ten Honorable Mention (media)
2010 Rose Bowl MVP
2010 All-Big Ten Honorable Mention (coaches and media)
2010 Big Ten MVP runner-up
2011 Miller-Digby Award (Sugar Bowl MVP)

Pryor 2008 vs Miller 2011 (Updated through 10 games)

I will continue to update this as the season goes on, but it's pretty interesting to take a look at Terrelle Pryor's freshman year in 2008 and Braxton Miller's freshman year in 2011. Keep in mind Miller didn't play in the Akron game, while Pryor played in every game, so we will compare by games played in by the individual, not team games.

Here is your chart through  games:

Player COMP ATT YDS TD INT Yds/ATT YDS/COMP COMP % RUSH YDS TD AVG
Terrelle Pryor 84 129 1076 9 3 8.34 12.81 65.1 103 450 5 4.37
Braxton Miller 53 109 762 9 3 6.99 14.38 48.6 128 595 6 4.65

As we hit the 10 game mark for Braxton, you can see the difference more clearly in the passing numbers. While both players threw 9 TDs in their first 10 contests, Miller trails Pryor by over 300 yards through the air. That being said, he ran for 145 more yards than TP, for a net difference of 169 yards, with one more total touchdown.

Obviously, the question is what do you make of this. Are the numbers that different in the passing game where Miller's record as a starter is 4-4 and Pryor's was 6-1 at the 10 game mark? I think the passing game with TP as a freshman definitely helped out a bit, but I think the other factors including lack of weapons on offense and off-field situation have been the major influencer of the poor record on Miller's part.

No guarantees, but you'd have to imagine if Tressel was still at the helm, the Bucks would probably look closer like the 8-2 team Pryor had through 10 games, rather than the 6-5 team Miller has through his 10 games played.

What say you Buckeye faithful?

And the best part is that it never gets old when Brady Hoke calls OSU "Ohio". NOT!

Brewster and Simon Two to Watch

Mike Brewster and John Simon were the two Buckeyes represented on the conference's Watch List which came out this morning. See the official release below:

July 28, 2011

CHICAGO - The Big Ten Conference released its inaugural Legends Division and Leaders Division Players to Watch list today and two Ohio State Buckeyes are among the 12 players selected by a media panel.

Senior All-American center Michael Brewster and junior defensive lineman John Simon were named to the Leaders Division list, a list that includes tie vote totals. The pair are joined by Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase, Indiana receiver Damario Belcher, Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti and Wisconsin running backs Montee Ball aned James White.

The Legends watch list is comprised of Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins, Nebraska defensive tackle Jared Crick and linebacker Lavonte David, and Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa.

Kyle Dodson Commits To Wisconsin

Kyle Dodson grew up an Ohio State fan from Cleveland and thought his dream was to grow up and play for the Buckeyes one day. That was until he visited Wisconsin.

"Growing up I always rooted for the Buckeyes because where I'm from everybody roots for them and hates Michigan", Dodson said. "But then as I started to get recruited, my grandma told me to really take a look at other schools besides Ohio State to make sure I was making the right decision and the best fit for me".

That right decision apparently was to take his talents to Madison, Wisconsin where he committed to Bret Bielema and the Wisconsin Badgers earlier this evening. The commitment came just 24 hours after receiving the coveted OSU offer that was on hold as the Buckeye staff awaited a qualifying ACT score. Dodson said getting the OSU offer last night "made things much harder" but he chose the Badgers because "it just felt right and I think they had the best tools to help me fulfill my lifelong dream of playing in the NFL".

The timing was certainly weird for a decision to commit to UW, as things appeared to be swinging to the Scarlet and Gray with Luke Fickell finally giving Dodson an official offer. The Bucks had been waiting to extend a scholarship to the 6-6/310 offensive lineman per a deal Jim Tressel made with the Cleveland Heights standout that stated that he would get an offer once he had a qualifying ACT score.

Many Buckeye fans think "slow playing" Dodson like that had an effect on his decision, but Kyle begged to differ, stating " At first I was kind of offended and confused as to why they weren't offering, but as things went on, I started to understand why Coach Tressel was doing things this way. I knew Coach Tressel wouldn't go back on the deal and that I had a scholarship as long as I qualified. That didn't have an effect on my decision."

As for the reason he felt today was the right day to commit to Wisconsin, Dodson said that he "didn't have time to drags things out because a lot of kids were committing earlier and he didn't want to lose his spot". He said he was pretty sure his decision was final, stating that "when you're committed, you're committed" , but also did go on to say that "it ain't over till it's over".

Dodson did want to keep things as classy as possible and spoke to OSU coach Taver Johnson this evening and also has plans to call Jim Bollman and the rest of the staff tomorrow. He said Johnson had a lot of class and told him that he would always be there for him regardless of his decision to attend Wisconsin.

On the other side of things, Dodson also spoke to his new coach Bret Bielema and played a little trick on him. When Kyle got on the phone with the coach he made it seem like he was committing elsewhere before pulling a 180 and pledging to the Badgers. The news of the commitment invoked a lot of screaming and yelling up north in Madison.

Finally, when asked if the situation had any effect on his decision at all, Dodson said it had some impact, but wasn't a deciding factor. He said he "loved Coach Tressel and thinks he is a great man", but likes Luke Fickell and the new staff a lot, although was uncertain of their future after this year. The instability and uncertainty may have played a minor role, but at the end of the day it seems he was just more comfortable heading up to Wisconsin.

Losing a player of Dodson's magnitude hurts a lot, especially since he is in state, but I must say he was very classy about the whole thing. It may look bad on the surface to get the "offer you have been waiting for" and commit to a rival less than a day later, but it appears after talking to Dodson that he is just making the decision he feels is best for him.

He did have one thing he wanted me to relay to Buckeye fans though:

"I hope you understand I made the decision that was best for me and that one day you can welcome me back with open arms, as it is my dream to play for the Browns. I'm not LeBron!"

Chris Carter Jr. Signs With OSU

After some potential legal troubles, Cleveland JFK OL Chris Carter has finally signed his NLOI with Ohio State. Below is a press release from the school:

Carter Signs With Ohio State Football
Cleveland native 24th to join Buckeye recruiting class

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Chris Carter, an offensive lineman from John F. Kennedy High School in Cleveland, Ohio, has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend The Ohio State University.

A 6-6, 350-lb. offensive guard who led Cleveland’s Kennedy High into the Division II playoffs, he was selected as the Senate League’s Most Valuable Player while playing for Coach Scott Wodtly.  A first team all-Senate League, all-region, and second team all-Ohio honoree, he was named to the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s  Top 20. Carter was also a letterman in weightlifting and track and field.

The student government president at Kennedy, and a member of the Army JROTC, peer tutoring program, 100 Kennedy Men, and Students of Promise, he is the son of Christopher and Arnetress Carter.

“We are excited Chris will be a Buckeye,” says Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel. “He has had a great support system at home, as well as at his high school with the likes of his principal Maryum Sims, his athletic director Velma Pettiegrew, and his coach Scott Wodtly. They truly believe that Chris will have great success on and off the field at Ohio State.”

The Buckeyes begin spring practice March 31. The football spring game is April 23 at Ohio Stadium. For updated information on Ohio State football, go to www.OhioStateBuckeyes.com.

Under Armour Game Tonight

The UA All-American game is tonight at 7PM on ESPN. Current OSU commits QB Braxton Miller, DE Steve Miller, and LB Ryan Shazier are participating. Potential future Buckeyes at the game are DB Doran Grant, DB Jabari Gorman, ATH Darius Jennings (Won't play-injury), WR Ja'Juan Story, LB James Vaughters (if Harbaugh leaves), and DE Jadeveon Clowney.

Grant and Gorman will announce during the game tonight. I have a good feeling Doran Grant will pick the Buckeyes but Gorman is really a toss-up. I think he is down to Florida and OSU. He really wants to be a Buckeye, but is getting a lot of family pressure to stay in state. I'm going to go with the Gators here, but the Bucks could definitely be picking up two awesome corners tonight (much needed!).

Here are the rosters for the game. Also a bonus is that Mike Ditka will be coaching!
