College Football 2012

In the words of a particularly inane Bud Light commercial, “HERE WEGO”.    Are we ready for the 2012 college football season?  Has our world completely come unglued?  Think about what we have seen in the last year or so.  Penn State has completely and deservedly imploded.  The Paterno statue is gone, Jerry Sandusky is in jail and the Nits will be on a farewell tour this season then fade from relevance for the next decade.   West Virginia, somehow, has joined the Big 12 conference.  Colorado and Utah joined the PAC 8, 10, 12.  Missouri left the Big 12 to join the SEC.  That ranked as the dumbest thing in the history of Missouri statehood until senatorial candidate Aiken started giving biology lessons.  He will only loose an election.  Mizzu is going to lose forever.  Texas A&M got their shorts in a bunch over the Longhorn Network and seceded from the Big 12 to join the SEC.  For their reward the Aggies get to play Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas and LSU every year and get to choose from Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina for their crossover games.  Talk about jumping from the frying pan into the boiling inferno of hell.  Wow!  BYU joined Army, Navy and Notre Dame as independents.  The most obvious connection between war and religion since the crusades.  The BCS has agreed to a 4 team playoff at some point in the future as long as 2 of the teams are from the SEC.  Bobby Petrino, after leading Arkansas to heights not seen since the days of Frank Broyles, went for just one too many motorcycle rides with his mistress.  To be fair, maybe having her on payroll was stepping just a bit over the line even for Conference Bubba standards.  If all that was not hilarious enough, to take his place the leadership at Arkansas chose John L. Smith.  Yes, the guy, who when coaching Michigan State, once punched himself in the face during a press conference.  John L.  is as sane as Rosie O’Donnell is cute.    John L. is to rational thought as Twinkies are to health food.  This should be sooo much fun.  I only hope we can somehow get the Arkansas press conferences on TV here in Buckeyeland.  The really odd thing is that the Razorbacks are loaded and if coached by a remotely functional human being might be able to hang with LSU and Bama for the SEC West.

OK, I know I am avoiding the obvious.  The REALLY BIG Change or at least the one we care about the most is the onset of the Urban Meyer revolution in Columbus. It hardly seems fair that Ohio State with all their built in advantages could grab the best coach this side of Nick Saban.  I know they are not rational enough to grasp this yet, but pity (not really) the poor Weasels.  They finally jettisoned RichRod and obtained the services of a reasonably competent coach in Brady Hoke.  They even lucked into a good year in 2011 with an 11-2 record.  But it is over.  The End.  Final. Terminated.  They don’t realize it in Ann Arbor yet, but 2011 was the high water mark.  Urban Meyer is going to own the Weasels every bit as much as Tressel did.  I am getting a bit ahead of myself, but do circle the date of November 24 (like you had not already done that) because that game should be more fun than a Slip N’ Slide with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.

Seriously, but wait.  You do realize that this whole year is sort of a mulligan for 2013, right?  I mean aside from 11/24 nothing really counts.  This year is all about impressing recruits, scaring opponents and securing a good position in the 2013 pre- season polls.  OK, back to seriously.  What can we expect from the 2012 Buckeyes?  Defense…….expect excellence, and look for it up front. The defensive line might be the best in the nation.  Before I go any further I do want to recognize the job Jim Heacock did with the Silver Bullets.  He was a great, and I do mean great, coordinator and he will be missed.  Fortunately his prize pupil, Luke Fickell, is more than ready to step in.   The secondary will be the best in the Big Ten.  The linebackers concern me a bit, but they should benefit from the studs up front.  Overall, I’m not sure they will be scored on this year.  Maybe in the bowl game.  Wait, we aren’t going to a bowl, so never mind.

On offense, I am not so confident.  I think Braxton Miller will be outstanding and set up his 2013 Heisman run.  Carlos Hyde, I think will shine, as will, once he returns, Jordan Hall.  The receivers, I sense, will be a bit better than advertised. I am a bit worried about the spread offense.  Urban says he wants to play power football from the spread.  I am not sure how exactly one does that, but he is getting several million more in compensation than me to figure that out.  I am excited, but nervous.  We are all waiting to see if the Jim Bollman/Jim Tressel tandem was as bad as we think.  Everybody in Columbus hated that combo, but they won an awful lot of games and rarely lost to inferior opponents.  The spread as we see it across the college football world is not a new thing and defenses have been catching up to it.  I worry about the spread in the red zone.  What if Braxton goes down?  All these worries, but I have faith in Urban’s ability to stay ahead of the curve.  Even though the punt may no longer be the most important play, we do have both our kickers back in Ben Buchanon and Drew Basil and that will come in handy somewhere along the road. Our season boils down to a trip to East Lansing and Madison as well as 11/24.  You have that date circled, right?  If we lose to anyone other than those three it will be disappointing to say the least.  And, mark it down; we are not losing on 11/24.

What about Miami you say?  Urban says he wants an angry Buckeye football team.  The Redhawks have two choices…show up or don’t show up.  Either way the go home with their paycheck and an 0-1 record.  My only concern is that our team might be a bit too jacked for this game and mistakes could result in some good things for the Miami bunch.  Does anyone really think John Simon is going to let Miami ruin the start of his senior season and of the Urban dynasty?  Miami brings a pretty good QB in Zac Dysert and receiver in Nick Howard.  That duo racked up over 3500 yards last year.  They also gave up 46 sacks while losing 8 games in 2011.  They are in wrong place at the wrong time.

Elsewhere around the pigskin world.

Alabama vs. Michigan @ Dallas.  Don’t both of these schools have good size stadiums, so why Dallas?  I’m sure Jerry Jones money-whipped somebody, but I prefer to think that the good folks in Tuscaloosa did not want their fair city invaded by the weasel hordes and opted for a neutral venue.  Sorry Big Ten loyalists but I gotta pull for the Tide.   Unless the Taliban has a football team I will pull for anyone playing the Weasels.

Notre Dame vs. Navy in Dublin, Ireland.  I think this neutral site thing just might be getting out of hand.  The Navy fleet and Irish pubs?  Not a good combo for the Midshipman.

Boise State at Michigan State.  Do the Broncos have life beyond the winningest QB in college history, Kellen Moore?  MSU’s loss of Kirk Cousins may actually be more of an issue.  Since the Buckeyes open the Big Ten season in East Lansing this one should merit watching.

Clemson vs. Auburn:  Can the Dabo Swinney miracle continue?  As long as Tajh Boyd is taking snaps it sure can.

It should be a fun season.  You can start scouting possible opponents for the Buckeyes  in the national championship game following the 2013 season.

Boston Buckeyes

Hey fellow buckeyes,

I just recently moved to Boston from Columbus and I am looking for any bars that fill up with scarlet and grey come game day?

Only thing I have heard so far is Game-On.

Thanks for the help, and GO BUCKS!

Springfield vs Hamilton Week 1 Recap

I was at last Saturday's showdown at Dayton Welcome Stadium that featured Springfield and Hamilton.  Springfield has several players that will attract recruiting attention such as juniors Thaddeus Snodgrass and Davonte James, along with freshman running back Xavier Garland.  Hamilton also played a freshman at CB in A'Shon Riggans that could definitely attract some top schools in years to come.

What I saw from Thaddeus Snodgrass:

  • Had 3 catches for 76 yards in the game
  • 1st catch was a 17 yard reception where he was able to break a few tackles.  He showed some strength I wasn't sure he had.
  • 2nd catch He beat his man on a route down the sideline for a 48 yard reception.
  • 3rd catch was a ball he caught in the last drive that stalled inside the 10.  It would have given Springfield the lead with under 2 minutes to go.  Snodgrass found a spot in the middle of the field for an 11 yard reception.
  • Snodgrass had two other targets in the first half but the balls were not catchable.
  • From the little action he got I was impressed with Snodgrass.  Springfield really did not feature him on offense like they should but he did well with what he was dealt with.  He also was active blocking down the field which is what you like to see.  He never took plays off.

What I saw from Davonte James:

  • He is listed at 6'3 and 218 pounds.  The size is there but sometimes he is exposed because he needs to get a bit stronger, as he is challenged with shedding blockers from time to time.
  • Regardless of the strength question, he performed well.  He plays inside and really close to the line of scrimmage.  James was in on a lot of tackles.

From Snodgrass:

  • He is looking to take some visits at games this season but unsure of which ones exactly.
  • Snodgrass hoping to be more involved on offense as the season proceeds.
  • Has no favorites and has offers from the likes of Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Ohio State.

From James:

  • Was thrilled with his performance and can't wait for the challenge of Middletown's offense.
  • He is planning on visiting West Virginia, Georgia Tech, and Ohio State for games.  James may get to West Virginia's game against Marshall this weekend.
  • Looking forward to keep performing at a high level and attract more offers from top programs.

TSUN fans debating MSU or OSU as biggest rivalry game this year

Thought people might find this interesting. TSUN fans debating which of thier rivalries is bigger this year. Generally they come down on the side of MSU this year since MSU is in their division and eligible to go to the championship. In most years this is going to be true of us and Wisconsin, but I can't ever see not hating TSUN to a degree that keeps it the most important game to me.

Hopefully it is okay for me to link to this site. If not, Mods please delete! Thanks.

I personally love that Notre Dame is never mentioned as a rivalry even though all my ND friends think of Michigan-ND as a huge game.

Calling All Live Blog Moderators

It's that time of the year again. We'll be hosting live blogs for every game this season starting with the opener against Miami this weekend.

We had a great crew that handled moderation and pretty much ensured things ran smoothly last year, but we're always looking to add a few more to help ease the load. If you are interested and we utilize your services, you will be paid in t-shirts from the soon-to-be-reopened 11W Dry Goods.

It's a good gig, really: Spend a bit of time on Saturday doing what you'd likely be doing anyway, and come away with the choicest cotton on the planet.

If you're interested, please shoot me a note and we'll go from there.

Thanks!

TOTALLY UNREALISTIC FEVER DREAM SCENARIO

SO because I am DRUNK AS HELL on this #Urban kool aid and because Saturday cannot come fast enough and to hell with "studying", I decided to type out the ultimate OSU fan dream scenario for this season.

Assume that a 2007-style season unfolds. A 1-loss team wins the SEC championship game and advances to the BCS by virtue of "winning" the "toughest" conference in all of history, blah blah blah. Let's say 2-loss Oregon upsets then-undefeated USC in a thrilling PAC championship game, and that the MEDIA deems them more "Deserving" than whatever boring old team wins the B1G. So then the BCS championship happens, and Oregon defeats the SEC champion, thereby leaving the "champion" and "runner up" of the BCS both with TWO losses.

MEANWHILE.

OSU goes RAMPAGING THRU THE SCHEDULE AS THE OTHER WEAK B1G TEAMS SCRAMBLE TO CATCH UP TO THE FORCE OF NATURE KNOWN AS URBZ. We SMASH Michigan by 45 at the Shoe on our last game and finish UNDEFEATED and UNDISPUTED NATIONAL CHAMPS.

Where are the shirts?

Where are the shirts that 11W made through skreened? I have looked all over, and want to purchase a skull session T.

Can anyone tell me where they went, or where I can find them? Was it ever cleared up as to how much of a percentage goes to 11W?

I also need to have at least 100 letters in a blog post, evidently. So in order to be able to receive responses on this query, I must increase my quantity. This seems to be much more difficult when you have such a simple question as "where are the shirts". Evidently I still need more. There you go...

Nothing To Play For

I've heard from people on a lot of different sites, some Buckeye and some not, that this team needs to get motivated because of the post season ban.

I do understand that the lack of an opportunity for a Big Ten Championship, no shot at a BCS bowl or not even having a shot at being crowned the National Championship, for a lack of a better word, sucks. But to say that this team has nothing to play for is simply absurd.

This is THE Ohio State University. The largest student body population of any US college. 56,867 students at the Columbus campus that care for the results of each and every game.

525,000 living alumni that care about each and every game.

105,000 for 8 home games this year that will care about the results for each game.

Roughly 3.1 million fans that long for college football so they can watch their beloved Buckeyes take the field against who ever they play and long to hear the victory bell at the end of the game.

The opportunity of taking the same field as greats such as Chuck Csuri, Les Horvath, Jim Stillwagon, Troy Smith, Archie Griffin, Jack Tatum, Eddie George, Woody Hayes, Orlando Pace, and the field that Chic Harley built. All who shed sweat, blood and tears to make The Ohio State University what it is today. It is the responsibility of the current team to build upon this legacy.

22 Senior members of the Ohio State football team that do not want to end their careers on a sour note.

24 true freshman that don't yet know what it's like to walk into Ohio Stadium on a Saturday against that team up north.

39 players that are currently 0-1 vs Brady Hoke and that team up north.

24 players that have the possibilty to be the first ever to go 7-0 against that team up north.

1 head coach whose record stands at 0-0 with The Ohio State University and taking the reigns of a powerhouse football team after one of the darkest and hardest years the Buckeyes have endured for a long time.

And last but not least, so none of us ever have to see this again:

OSU Players Recruited By Urban

Just thought it would be interesting to give everyone a look at the veteran players currently on the roster (non-true frosh) who were recruited by Urban at Florida. These were players who had offers from Meyer when he was the head coach. There were some others on last year's roster, but I thought it was interesting that Meyer now gets to coach these players after missing out on them while in Gainesville.

  • DE Michael Bennett
  • WR Corey "Philly" Brown
  • LB Curtis Grant
  • DT Joel Hale
  • DT Jonathan Hankins
  • RB Carlos Hyde (when at Naples before prep school)
  • QB Braxton Miller
  • LB Etienne Sabino
  • LB Ryan Shazier
  • TE/WR Jake Stoneburner

Not a bad list, eh?

Glass Half-Full, Half-Empty: Miami University

We Buckeye fans are a conflicted lot. We see our glasses as half-full or half-empty, rarely exhibiting a nuanced, even sensible perspective on our football team’s chances of winning a game. Sometimes, we even see things both half-full and half-empty at the same time. That’s why I’ve decided to predict every game this season with this mindset so as to not get too high or too low heading into the weekend.

This is how we clap, Les.

This week’s opponent: University of Miami University Redskins RedHawks (of Ohio)

Half-Full Perspective: Buckeyes 73 RedHawks 0
Urban Renewal™ commences Saturday, y’all!

Johnny Simon and the defense crush a few popped collars en route to a shutout. Bros Fickell and Vrabel get so amped they rip off their coaches shirts to reveal matching Affliction t’s and fresh tribal tats. The young pups all find their way onto to the field and each leave with at least a sack, forced fumble, or interception to their freshly-scribed resumes.

Despite passing for nearly 300 yards, Team Soc spends the entire game trying to make up for the record-tying 12 sacks the Bullets accumulate over the course of the afternoon. The RedHawks inverse last year’s rushing average with an unheard of -74 yards rushing. Both Roby and Howard score pick-sixes in the rout.

On offense, all cylinders are clicking as Braxton rolls up over 200 yards passing on 17/23 passing, 100 yards rushing on only seven carries, and five touchdowns overall (3 through the air and 2 the hard way). It could have been worse, but Urban sits the sophomore at halftime, making room for Kenny G to do more of the same in the second half. Carlos “El Guapo” Hyde turns in a serviceable 17 for 150 afternoon with two scores of his own, but he’s upstaged as freshman Bri’onte Dunn eclipses those numbers on four long touchdown runs covering 80, 64, 32, and 53 respectively.

The receivers even decide to show up. Corey Brown leads the way with 7/140 and two TD’s - one on a punt return and the other through the air. Stoney, Thomas, Smith all gather in four or more catches on the day and a touchdown each.

Oh, and there wasn’t one false start from the right tackle position. NOT ONE.

Half-Empty Perspective: Buckeyes 17 RedHawks 14
Urban Meyer is useless as the emotions of the day overwhelm him, making it impossible for him to coach or make any play calls. Every time the band bursts into “Hang On Sloopy”, he has to run back into the locker room to compose himself. He eventually decides to call it a day midway through the second quarter, leaving the rest of the game to his assistants...

After giving up a quick touchdown on a broken play by Braxton Miller, the RedHawks regain their poise, turning the Buckeye offense away for a field goal in which Ohio State botches good field position with sloppy play, including a dropped pass which Corey Brown would have surely walked into the end zone. For the game, Miller goes an abysmal 7/25 for 104 yards and 13 yards on the ground thanks in large part to five sacks.

The defense is clueless as to how to stop a team that passes every down. Preps are flying all around to the tune of 400 yards passing. Somehow, the defense holds on for a 10-7 halftime lead.

Devastated after Nathan Williams is carted off the field with a reaggravated knee injury, the defense gives up a long touchdown on a wide receiver screen late in the third quarter. Ryan Shazier completely over-pursues as he has done all day and Miami looks to pull off their biggest upset since Ben Roethlisberger almost beat Iowa in 2003.

Luckily, Miami quarterback Zac Dysert throws it one-too-many times at WR Nick Harwell (10 catches for 240 yards) and Bradley Roby picks off the pass for the game-winning touchdown, causing him to start a controversy as to why he finished the day with more touchdowns than the entire receiving corps and the coaches still won’t let him play offense.

Game of the Week that’s not a Buckeyes game: Michigan vs. Alabama

Half-Full Perspective: Alabama 42 Michigan 37
Alabama shows that its defense is less game-ready than they suspected as they let Denard and the Wolverines jump out to a 24-10 halftime lead. Robinson gets away with a jump-ball touchdown to Roundtree just before the half, giving Wolverine nation hope that...er...Hoke is their savior.

Then, it all comes crashing to earth.

Alabama begins to impose its will on the thin Michigan front seven, running on nearly every down, slowly chipping away at Michigan’s lead. Denard throws four second-half interceptions - all of the jump-ball variety - until the final one is returned for the deciding touchdown.

The game effectively ends Robinson’s Heisman campaign while simultaneously causing great doubt in Alabama’s ability to defend their national championship. Still, the game is an exciting, hot mess, sure to be replayed on ESPN for years to come.

Half-Empty Perspective: Michigan 17 Alabama 6
Alabama’s defense is playing lights out, but they grow weary chasing Denard all game long as he scores both of Michigan’s touchdowns with electrifying, Heisman-type ease. Robinson’s game-winning run where he reverses the field three times and leaps over two ‘Bama defenders at once is only overshadowed by a Michigan defense that stifles the Crimson Tide, making the game not as close as the score would indicate.

We are then made to listen to Michigan fans incessantly brag about this win for the rest of the season, regardless of the remaining outcomes.
