Report: Darius Slade Will Visit Ohio State

By Jordan Wagner on February 5, 2014 at 7:23a

Darius Slade

According to a report, Michigan State 2014 commitment Darius Slade will not sign with the Spartans and plans to visit Ohio State soon. The three-star prospect backed out of his commitment with Nebraska after Urban Meyer visited his high school, but then quickly committed to Michigan State.

The Buckeyes have offered the New Jersey native and Larry Johnson Sr. has a good relationship with Slade. A visit is expected the weekend of Feb. 15, per the report.

Stay tuned to Eleven Warriors as this story develops.

Nice to hear!

This is like the JJ situation with reversed roles. Feels good. Hopefully Urban can go 3/3 against Sparty, or at least 2/3.

That's what I was thinking, only I was thinking it with use of spaces.

As I finished reading up the last couple of sentences, this was exactly what popped in my head.

+1 for the awesome, old school Laugh-In reference, JF.

I like what is brewing between us and MSU.

Haha, Urban is making it very clear to Dantonio to not screw with our commits

Coach Meyer's revenge for December.  I'm stealing your guys and there is nothing you can do about it!

Note to Dantanio: Looks like you pissed off Urban. Not a good idea.

Could also be due to the fact Malik is swaying towards MSU, so its a two-part move: getting another DL in the class and snagging one of MSU's commits....if theres a rivalry in the B1G that can be full of respect, its MSU and OSU. Dantonio and Meyer. Should be fun for the next few years.

Birm has changed his crystal ball to OSU today!

It seems like we are tearing up recruiting in NJ.

comments are pretty funny.

"Can we please stop the message board fighting? I really can't stand the message board fighting..."

"No. You're an idiot, and your posts are terrible."

Interesting tweet. If it was a few weeks ago, maybe we have the Larry Johnson connection to thank.

After picking Nebraska, then Sparty, now not so sure...... the young man should take some time to make his decision.

Jeremy Birmingham's picture

Slade will be a Buckeye barring something crazy happening between now and then, from what I am hearing.

bucknut8's picture

I hate to be "that guy" and ask this, but is this a case that we are now pushing for Slade because McDowell is headed elsewhere? or just Slade doing his own thing & us possibly taking both guys?
Thanks for all that you do for us Birm! We LOVE it! Happy National Signing Day!

Jeremy Birmingham's picture

Two are not related, but McDowell is not likely headed to OSU.

buckeyedude's picture

I think I know how he feels. It's like having several hot gurlz fighting over you.

sivaDavis's picture

Slade finds out or gets told McDowell is going to sign with the Spartans? That's why the change of heart? Just a guess. And I cannot wait to hear McDowells mom interviewed after he commits. That lady needs her own show. I'm being serious.

This would push us over 82, assuming all of the LOI's come in.

HighBallAce's picture

Guess I'm gonna be one of those guys too. He seems kinda small and don't we have a ton of Defensive End talent on the team already? I realize it's a good thing to keep Jones and now steal Slade but in all honesty, if we can't get McDowell as well, isn't Slade kind of  a step down from McDowell? I mean I know the star system sometimes doesn't mean anything but one is a 3 star and the other a 5. There's a significant height difference, and yes I think it's only 2 inches but McDowell weights more and has longer arms. I believe McDowell was someone who could posibly move to another spot on the line and be a day one start. I don't see that in Slade.

Crimson's picture

Larry Johnson wanted Slade, so Slade got an offer.  Penn State was recruiting him a while back.

HighBallAce's picture

I understand that but what I'm saying is that Slade seems to be too small to play DE. He's 6'5" 238lbs. He seems to be built more like a LB to me.  Raekwon McMillan is bigger than he is and we are recruiting Slade for DE? I had a feeling we would lose out on McDowell and we did. And truth is, on that one, that hurts! Cause as I was saying, we are trading a 5 star player in McDowell who was 6'7" 290lbs who is ready to play, for Slade who's size I already mentioned, and I can honestly see McDowell wreaking havoc on Braxton Miller at the line of scrimage with those long arms of his.

O-H-I-Owe-U's picture

Size isn't everything. Clemson's Vic Beasley is listed as 6'3" 225 lbs. He's a hell of a player.
If we couldn't get MM, I'll trust Coach Johnson's opinion that Slade is the best defensive end he saw this year and welcome him with open arms. Actually would be happy with this given how concerned Malik's parents have been about his maturity.

Scarlet_Lutefisk's picture

...and those numbers are after having been exposed to a college S&C program.
The rush ends for the previous three classes (coming out of high school):
Darius Slade 6'5" 238lbs
Jalyn Holmes 6'5" 225 lbs
Tyquan Lewis 6'4" 227 lbs
Tracy Sprinkle 6'4" 250 lbs
Noah Spence 6'3" 235 lbs
Adolphus washington 6'5" 245 lbs
Jamal Marcus 6'2" 225 lbs
Steve Miller 6'5" 215 lbs
Left the program:
Kenny Hayes 6'4" 245 lbs
Se'Von Pittman 6'5" 235 lbs

McDowell is a beast ,but think are we pretty well set at D-Line anyway, so he was gonna be gravy (a big Love-Boat of gravy). So maybe a project guy at the end of the day is what coaches wanted anyway, like Slade.

wouldnt it be crazy to keep J.Jones, get McDowell, AND steal Slade!? Man oh man would that be sweet and quite the message to MSU.

BIG TEN CHESS: Dantonio tries to flip Jones, Urban Keeps Jones takes Slade. Don't mess with the pro bro

We were born to love Ohio State and hate that team up north.

Canukbuck's picture

It seems pretty obvious that MM is not coming here, which opens the door (and scholie for Slade) .... Would love to have MM's talent and athletic ability, but I have a bad feeling that his work ethic (both in the class and on the field) is no where near five star status.  I think we dodge a bullet with this miss .... Good luck to him at MSU (and good luck to MSU dealing with him) ....

Poison nuts's picture

I doubt anyone would feel like this kid was a burden if he was headed to OSU.

It seemed weird at the time he committed so fast, so I guess this isn't very surprising.

11w Staff: What kind of player does Slade project to be? Like a Will Smith? Why does Larry Johnson want him so badly?

teddyballgame's picture

If you watch some of his highlights, the kid seems to have a good nose for the ball.  Can't really teach instincts...
If anyone can find a "diamond in the rough" it's Larry Johnson.  Hope we can land Mr. Slade.

toad1204's picture

He'll excel in Coach Mick's off season program.  Add another 30 lbs to his frame and he's a force to be wrecken'ed with.

Nothing like dancing on the field in 02...

Anybody know where Se'Von Pittman landed?

So is Slade pretty much a (hate this term as much as the next guy) lock? A visit that late, after just signing with Sparty sure seems like either he's pretty sure we're the girl he really wants to take to prom, or he's just very cautious.

ColoradoBuck's picture

Pretty strong message to Dantonio to leave our commits alone.
