Lane Kiffin is heated, y'all

The blast of offensive coordinator-related Buckshots continues as the curious career of Lane Kiffin has reached its latest chapeter. Despite being a failure in the last three head coaching gigs he's had, Lane Kiffin is in position to become Alabama's next offensive coordinator. From CBS Sports:

Kiffin will visit Tuscaloosa for the interview but won't be alone in the running for the job. A long list of NFL suitors should be involved for a coveted job to replace Doug Nussmeier, who is now Michigan's offensive coordinator.

The 38-year-old Kiffin, who went a combined 35-21 as coach of Tennessee and USC, visited Alabama during bowl prep as a consultant/observer.

Kiffin runs a pro-style offense, which fits with Saban's style of ball control and a physical running game. But Saban has said recently that he's open to upping the tempo to adapt to attack defenses.

Kiffin must be dynamic in the film room or something, but also: can we get a buddy movie centering around the friendship of Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin? Could there be an odder fit for "pals" in college football?

Hahahaha. Kiffin's wife going from So Cal to Tuscaloosa???? "Reverse Beverly Hillbillies"?? Perfection.

BamaBuckeye144's picture

Yeah, trust me, she's not going to like it. Daddy ain't the head cheese any more, she ain't shopping on Rodeo and Jim and Nicks ain't the four seasons. ROFL!

OH-IO!

That pic gets me every time. Kiffin is such a turd.

You can feed a bobcat all the chili it wants. That don't mean it's going to crap out diamonds.

Chief B1G Dump's picture

Kiffin has to attach nude pictures of his wife to his resume to keep landing all these great jobs.

Buckeye Scottie's picture

I would hire him on the spot.....

Chief B1G Dump's picture

Kiffin is a great recruiter. He pulls in 5 star talent both in players and in tail the same way...way out of his league.

BucksfanXC's picture

Was it Jame Franklin that said before he hires coordinators he has to meet their wife to make sure they are a good recruiter. His logic being that it means they have the confidence to sell themselves

And Layla would fit that bill

Chief B1G Dump's picture

Ha, yes. I mentioned that in the James Franklin thread.
And that it sounded crazy but I dig his logic.

PittBuckeye's picture

It's like he's Benjamin Button, his career is going in reverse. (Ignoring a few facts)
Starts as Raiders HC, goes to be a college HC, now a college coordinator, soon to be a receivers coach probably, has anyone checked if the dude's looking younger?

Just cue your best Al Davis, Tuscaloosa....

If Saban hires Kiffin then he's settling. I'm sure there are lines forming for that position.

What's crazy is, I actually think this might be a good fit...if he is hired. There are a lot of bad head coaches that are great coordinators. Kiffin might be one of them. Also, he isn't bad at recruiting.

45OH4IO's picture

Agreed.
My only concern would be is Kiffin cut out for the rigid, disciplinarian culture that Saban/Bama promote?

MichaelJ721984's picture

I agree wholeheartedly. He's an obvious douche but he can recruit & I think since he's not in charge of the program this will work out. I certainly hope not though.

BamaBuckeye144's picture

Whatever Kiffin supposedly knew about being an OC, don't you think he's been passed by?? He's had someone else doing that for him for a while now.

'Rusty' might be an understatement. Oh, and if Kiffin had anything to do with the curb stomping that Oklahoma was able to put on the Tide, I don't know that hiring him would be my first reaction. LOL.

OH-IO!

Just when I think the world can't hate Alabama any more than they do.

Why does everyone say Kiffin is an OC genius? I've never understood that. If he's so danged smart, why did USC flounder or UT flounder? Surely he could pass along some great insight to his OC at the time and right the ship. I'm leaning towards the invented construct of him being a 'genius'. I think enough people repeat it so everyone assumes it is true. Frankly, IMHO, I think the guy is acerbic and poison to any place he goes.

OH-IO!

DJ Byrnes's picture

Agreed, Bama.

But on the other hand: NICK SABAN LIKES HIM AND MUST AT LEAST BE ENTERTAINING THE IDEA OF HIRING HIM. Saban wouldn't be hiring Lane Kiffin out of nepotism.

Just baffling all around.

Maybe Kiffin is just a good X and Os coach but not a 'people person'. Maybe Bama should hire Tom Synkowski to help Lane and his players communicate.

In the same exact notion, people just circle jerk over him being a complete failure because everyone else says it.  Half the people probably don't even remember his OC days at USC.  I don't know about 'genius', but he definitely knows offense, his squads put up some ridiculous numbers.  Even at Tennessee, where he was seen as a joke, he took a horrid Vols offense and flipped it into something above average in one season.
The big thing here is his recruiting ability, which is something Saban is very high on.  Kiffin was pulling top classes year after year.  5 stars galore, even while USC was sanctioned.  Now I know Southern Cal is an easy school to recruit for, but just wait and see the impact he has at Alabama, the most attractive school in the country.
I honestly think this move will do nothing but IMPROVE the already elite team that is Alabama Crimson Tide.  All of Kiffin's downfalls he had as a head coach are things that Saban excels at.

BamaBuckeye144's picture

Good points. Like I said, I am mostly curious how he got the rep and if it was deserved or still is. Saban isn't an idiot, so he must know something. Or Kiffin has pictures of Saban and someone not named Mrs. Saban.

Before he left for the Raiders, Kiffin was helping to coach an offense that had Lienhart at QB, Bush and Lendale White at Tailback, 5* WR's and even had pulled a 4/5* TE from Toledo, Ohio.  He was coaching 2 Heisman Trophy winners in the same backfield, at one point.  Before Lienhart at QB, they had Carson Palmer at QB who was also a Heisman Trophy winner.  Do you give Kiffin the credit for having 3 different players win the Heisman Trophy in an offense he called plays for.  Kiffin was only OC for 2 years, and those were the peak years of Pete Carrol's USC Dynasty.  Some credit has to be given to his predecessor Norm Chow, and also Pete Carrol.

In Kiffin’s three years as recruiting coordinator at USC, the Trojans had the No. 1 ranked recruiting class in college football every year.

it's about recruiting.

BTBuckeye's picture

Wow. That would be a stupid hire.

AltaBuck's picture

This just in from Brent Musburger - to win a national championship, a program must model itself after the SEC and hire a douchebag for their OC.

Why all the hate for Kiffin? he is not like bert B who coached in the Big and left.I am sure that he is a fine OC. The wily  Saban would not hire him if he doesn't  see some good things there .Lets worry about our DC first, and see who make the defensive calls next year ..

johnblairgobucks's picture

Why all the hate for Kiffin

had numerous NCAA violations in a short stint at Tenn.  and his defense of these violations was that he didn't know he was breaking a rule.
publicly poked the SEC "Big Dogs" saying they'd be singing Rocky Top all night long, in victory, then got his ass beat on the field.
Lied to recruits
showed up late to bowl game obligations while at USC.
fired a ball boy at USC, while putting the blame on him for under inflating footballs.  Almost everyone knows Kiffin had his thumbs on this.
He has a super hot wife
He gets good jobs, while consistently under performing at his previous locations
He was at USC during the "Bush violation" years, and it's hard to believe that No coach was responsible for what went on in L.A., just Reggie, coupled by how Lane violated rules at Tenn., he seems flakey, slimey and a very slick liar.

fanfarris's picture

"he has a super hot wife". Now i see where your hate coming from.Just as you hated Petrino for having a hot young Girl. Remember the old saying that for every hot woman, there is someone there who is bored from boning her.So you still have ur chance w these hot women.

Plus Lane fired his own father, Monty, as DC at USC. I'd call lane a scum bag, but that would be a disservice to bags filled with scum.

If you saw Kiffin's act in Knoxville, you'd understand. Douche Deluxe from day one.

buckeyestu's picture

Not a kiffin fan, but he can recruit, and Alabama will likely reel in even better classes than they do now.

No way.  Best buddy film ever would be Petrino, Pitino, and Papa John in Vegas for a Bachelor Party Weekend before Petrino renews his vows.

The movie would be sure to have motorcycle riding, sex in a restaurant, and Papa John printing "Cry Baby" shirts to be sent to Miami.
