Per gambling sage & Ohio State alumnus RJ Bell's Twitter feed:

Other BCS Lines:

Rose: Stanford (-3) over Michigan State
Sugar: Alabama (-14.5) over Oklahoma
Fiesta: Baylor (-17.5) over University of Central Florida
Title: Florida State (-7.5) over Auburn

Vegas' lines aren't merely just a reflection of their belief of the outcome of games, but also used to entice betting on both sides of the ball. That said, the Orange and Rose Bowl games should be bangers.

Hmmmm... Perhaps a fierce parlay is in order here. Wonder what President Harding would do here...
Perhaps it would go like this:

  • Dem Bucks (-3) over the Fighting Charlie Baumans;
  • Sweet Home 'Bamers (-14.5) over OU, 'cause Big Game Bob; and,
  • Gus Malzhan (+7.5) over the 'Noles, because there is no justice in the world.

So the score will be 63-60?

My thoughts exactly!  I'm thinking that the Orange Bowl has a shot at being a really high scoring game.  I think some records have a possibility at falling (ie points, rushing yards, passing yards etc.)
Hey as long as the Bucks have 3 more and it turns out to be 63 to 60 I'll be happy with that!
Go Bucks!

I would hammer MSU with them getting 3. I think they win the game outright (although it won't count because it wasn't "Stanford Football." I also have a feeling I will like the Wisconsin and Iowa lines when I see them. I could see the B1G having a good bowl season this year.

hmmmm, that's nice and close isn't it...

It's a sucker bet. Anything less than 5 should be a pick 'em.

What does this even mean?

It means that any time Vegas sets points, they are intrinsically betting that the money comes down 50/50 on either side; if they see that this isn't the case, they move the points to where the money is in an attempt to maximize their odds of making more money.
Long story short - when they set the points at 3, they're basically admitting it is too close for them to call right now. I have always felt that when the line is less than 5, they're saying the same thing, but then the argument becomes about potential scoring combinations, etc., i.e. more teams lose by 3, 4, 6, or 7 than by 5.
The oddsmakers are thinking they're going to make a lot of money on this one, basically.

Am I the only one thinking Baylor goes ape wild over UCF?

I think Bama -14.5 is a steal.

I wasn't born a Buckeye but I became one as fast as I could.

I've watched UCF a few times this year, including watching the Louisville game (and of course, watching them against us last year). They'll be a tough out for Baylor. When I saw that line, my thought was, if I was a gambler, I'd take UCF and that 17 pts! Of course, if I actually MADE the bet, then they'd get blown out. They might get blown out, regardless. That's why I'm not the gamblin' type.

Thinking you've found easy money is exactly what Vegas wants you to think.  The most obvious lines are the ones to go the other way on, especially in bowl season.

I hate to say it, but has Vegas seen our secondary?  Boyd and Watkins will have a field day on us.  I have said all year I would go right after Roby.  His head is already in the NFL, which in the words of Jerry Glenville, will stand for Not For Long if he plays like he currently is.

Great pic!  GO BUCKS!

I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.

Can anyone recommend a good site for understanding gambling terminology and stuff?  I never really picked it up along the way.

What I saw when I opened up msn.com this morning and saw "Predicting the BCS Bowls" from FOX Sports, they have OSU beating Clemson by 25.
OSU 38, Clemson 13 (I do think OSU will win but with a closer margin and more Clemson points)
Auburn 38, FSU 34 (I think FSU wins by 2 TDs)
Alabama 45, Oklahoma 10 (and they talk about OSU BCS futility...if this were to come true, I'd say Oklahoma futility would be most well known)
Sparty 24, Stanford 20 (B-1-G!  B-1-G!)
Baylor 41, UCF 20 (I think UCF will lose but it will be closer than that)

what's the O/U? and can I put ALL THE MONEY on the over?

cronimi's picture

I haven't seen an O/U on the Orange. Of the BCS bowls, I've only seen an O/U on Aub-FSU -- it's 66.

Vegas wants equal money on each side.  If they feel OSU needs -3 to do that then that's not exactly a vote of confidence.
