So much for narratives. Baylor went into Stillwater as 7.5-point favorites, but leave bruised following a 49-17 beating at the hands of No. 10 Oklahoma State. Mike Gundy, you sir, are indeed a man.

1 Alabama @ No. 6 Auburn SECCG
2 Florida State @ Florida ACCCG
3 Ohio State @ Michigan Michigan State (B1GCG)

Ohio State becomes a solid No. 3 in the BCS rankings which will be updated tomorrow night, with no real threat of being jumped anytime soon.

You may hear chatter of Auburn jumping Ohio State if it manages to defeat Alabama Saturday and then wins the SEC Championship Game, but that's not going to happen. If Ohio State beats Michigan and then a Michigan State team that should be ranked in the top 10 in the Big Ten Championship game, there's no way they're getting jumped.

Now, we dance. And wait for Alabama or Florida State to trip up.

Baylor didn't play Stanford football.

eb314's picture

They actually played Oregon football, and Oregon last night again played true Oregon football rather than perceived Oregon football.  True Oregon football is a lot like Stanford football, but Stanford football from when they lost to Utah (not real Stanford football).  Stanford scored 63 points last night and was actually playing Baylor football.

Great game today! And, I hate to be the one to say this, but I'm expecting some voices on a particular sports tv network to start talking about Auburn... Go Bucks!

WAR EAGLE.

I'm gonna be randomly posting/yelling that all week. I have no idea what it means even. (an eagle is in the military? going to war over an eagle? who knows.) But hell FSU isn't going to lose, short of Winston being arrested. So Auburn is OUR ONLY HOPE NOW. DON'T LET US DOWN MALZAHNNN

What makes it even weirder is that their mascot is the tigers. Seems about right.

ScarletGray43157's picture

I just finished reading THIS because someone else brought it up on the other thread and I looked it up.  Interesting history of the War Eagle tradition at Auburn.
If Ohio State stays undefeated we won't be jumped by any team with one loss or more in the BCS.  So like we've been saying all season, we have to win out and let the chips fall where they may.  The only part Ohio State can control is the winning part on our end.  Take the games one at a time.  Be ready if an opportunity develops.  Stay focused on the task at hand.  If we get a shot at the NCG, I think Urban will be able to take advantage of it.  Let's hope it happens.

@ScarletGray43157: Very well put. Thats the way it is and has been all season throughout this up and down ride full of media types dissing our program/schedule/conference. Win or lose, if we make the MNC following an two undefeated seasons we have earned it and deserve it.
Even if the Bucks put the screws to -ichigan next week, it will be much, much harder than it looks because that team will be going apeshit on the field. A win is not guaranteed and it won't be easy. That said, OSU will win because, Urban Meyer. As fans we will focus on the next game. Pass that and its time to think about MSU, a very formidable foe. After these next two games, we will have a very seasoned and hardened group who have faced some damn good teams.
Its an 'us against the world' season for sure and nobody can interfere with our destiny!

It's not a mascot but rather a battle cry; and used much like we use OH IO as a greeting. There are several stories about its origins but no matter how it started it's a tradition at Auburn, much like rolling Toomer's Corner. Watching War Eagle fly in at the start of a game at Jordon - Hare is pretty cool (though not as good as TBDBITL's ramp entrance, IMHO).
Auburn will have its hands full with Bama; and if they play the game of their life and Bama is flat they might pull an upset in the Iron Bowl. Fortunately, I already made plans to see OSU play in Indy and or else I'd be buying SEC Championship game tickets if AU went.
Go Bucks. Beat the school up north and War Damn Eagle!

I would just like to take a moment to re-visit articles like this one, which encapsulates the national narrative we've heard the past several weeks that Baylor is superior to Ohio State.

Suck it, Gil Brandt. Just suck it.

Blue Eyed Buckeye's picture

I hope everything falls into place as we hope and Ohio State makes everyone in the national media eat a gigantic plate of crow on January 6th.  It will be so glorious to turn on the TV Jan 7th.

ScarletGray43157's picture

So Brandt is, in effect, saying that Oklahoma State would wipe the field with Ohio State?  ( I realize this statement was made prior to tonight's game, but still...)
When he was with the Cowboys Brandt drafted some Big Ten players, and traded for some as well, if I recall correctly.
It is easy to pile on something, but more difficult to do research so one actually can speak with some wisdom.  I know this from experience.

I think more and more, this HAS to be recognized... FSU's best wins are now against Clemson (who beat Georgia - "4 losses" and hopefully will lose to South Carolina - "2 losses" including Georgia and Tennessee) and Miami - 3 losses... FSU's two remaining games are against Florida - 7 losses, wait, is that for real? and in the ACC Championship Game... drumroll... DUKE! Ha, Duke, really!? (Duke, who beat nobody and lost to Georgia Tech and Pittsburgh)
While tOSU's schedule isn't necessarily glamorous, wins against Wisconsin (that loss/tragedy to AZ State is looking better and better also) and hopefully a 1 loss, top 10 Michigan State...
Maybe, just maybe, the voters and computers put Ohio State ahead, especially if they blow the doors off of Sparty. Go Bucks!

New theory: The media has actually figured out that Ohio State is pretty boss, but is downplaying it so that they will have a storyline for the NCG. If OSU wins the title (assuming we make the game), it's the 2002 season/underdog story all over again. Should we lose, they claim they were right all along and sweep it under the rug.

...and Michigan still sucks.

Look, I get that most national level sports analysts have to be bandwagon, flavor-of-the-week loving, hyperbolic spin artists that talk out of both sides of their mouth, but their recent fixation on Baylor was one of the most egregious examples of this disingenuous behavior.

Apparently true.
Remember back when Oregon jumped Ohio State when we were #2? (Before BCS rankings came out).  All of a sudden it was fashionable to have whoever was behind Ohio State to jump over them.

I know this is a pointless exercise.....but I really don't get why FSU is rated so high.  They beat Clemson as their signature win.   Clemson's best win was Georgia, who is now unranked.....
This in not rhetorical, I really want to know why.   Won't we jump them if they only play Duke in the ACC championship?

You may hear chatter of Auburn jumping Ohio State if it manages to defeat Alabama Saturday and then wins the SEC Championship Game, but that's not going to happen.

I've been dismissive of people worried about us being jumped by a 1-loss team, but Auburn might be the exception. Stanford was never going to pass us after beating Oregon because their loss was truly terrible (back when they had just the one), and because voters in Pac-12 country don't feel a constant need to act as PR representatives for their region. But an Auburn win over Alabama would impress people more than Stanford topping Oregon, and SEC types most definitely do vote as a bloc.
I'm not predicting it will happen, but I don't think we can simply wish it away as a possibility. The belief that the SEC as a conference "deserves the right" to defend "its" championship is amazingly persistent.

Johnny_Buck71's picture

Any 1-loss SEC champion scenario is a viable threat to jump us. All of the remaining options (SC, Bama, Auburn, Missouri) will be top 8 or higher after this weekend. And the University of SEC has won the last whatever NCs. It may be unlikely, but it is definitely possible.

TilstheHun3's picture

I don't know how voters could possibly keep FSU ahead of Ohio State if Winston, their starting QB for the season, is kicked off the team... FSU would no longer be the same team that got them to their current position. Ohio State would pass them.

What is this? A center for ants?!? How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read if they can't even fit inside the building?

bigbill992001's picture

I dont see him getting kicked off the team unless he's arrested.   Felonies are one thing, winning football games is another.   Can you say Cam Newton?   Hell, can you say tOSU?   Follow the money.   FSU/Bama is a bigger draw that OSU/Bama.

vitaminB's picture

Your analogies are horrible.  The FSU rulebook says he must be suspended indef if he is "charged" with a felony.  There is his DNA in her panties and she says he raped her.  That's enough right there for a charge.  Whether or not he gets convicted is another story, but he will be charged, for sure.
The real sticking point is whether or not the voters allow a backup QB lead FSU team play in the NCG.  If bama wins another title against a shitty QB I'm going to lose my mind.
Texas - Backup
LSU - Jordan Jefferson (horrible arm punting felon)
ND - Freshman QB

Citrus's picture

FSU's backup had surgery and is out for the season. They would be starting the third-stringer, a red shirt freshman.

bigbill992001's picture

Define "indef".   Can be 20 yrs, or 20 seconds.   Just this yr. Rick Pitino suspended Behanan "indefinately".   Lasted about 2 practices.   Same as the Sugar Bowl, the TV exects arent gonna let a Heisman candidate sit on the sidelines.   Our suspensions were delayed til the following yr. so that TP et all could play in the Bowl.   This is all assuming that FSU makes the NC game, of course   Time will tell..

ogama843's picture

Disagree completely about the draw part.  And since I don't have any evidence as to what Urban would do in a situation similar to FSU's I cant make a judgment on that? All 8 can say is innocent until proven guilty.

You could not be more wrong about fsu bama being a bigger draw than OSU /bama. Two best coaches in the game and tOSU has the largest fan base in the nation. This was the matchup everyone talked about before the season. The ESPN effect has been ridiculous. Watching sports center  last night all they reviewed was sec football. It's really gotten gross how bias they are. I always new it was true but seeing it in action made me enraged.

If Auburn can pull it off, that would almost completely remove the chance for the SEC to have a representative in the national title game. I think if OSU and FSU win out, and Auburn does in fact beat Bama and win the SEC, the media, particularly those associated with ESPN will be hard-pressed to make a decision that would expose their incredible bias (i.e. placing Auburn ahead of OSU). This is the last time this week I care about anything else but beating the hell out of Michigan. F Michigan, Go Buckeyes.
