Devin Gardner Is Receiving Lots of Hate Mail, Tweets From "Passionate" Michigan Fans

Still better than the Brandon Weeden scoop INT.

From The Detroit News:

"When you play well, everybody loves you, and when you don't, I don't know if you want to say (they) hate you -- I got a lot of hate mail," Gardner said. "It comes with the territory.

“And I try my best to explain to the young guys so they don't get frustrated. I feel like they've understood, like, ‘Wow, maybe it's just about us, no matter what anybody else says -- good or bad -- it's about us because they'll love you and hate you.’”

Gardner said he has experienced most of the negativity via Twitter. "(I've received) tweets and stuff like that – just (saying) they hate me," Gardner said, before breaking out into a grin. "That's OK, I still love you guys."

Credit to Gardner for taking the high road on the anonymous trolls. And to those of you going out of your way to shit on a 21-year-old kid: you're telling on the state of your life.

I'd never done a crazy thing in my life before that night. Why is it that if a man kills another man in battle, it's called heroic, yet if he kills a man in the heat of passion, it's called murder?

I think OSU fans should send some love mail to him, after all, he may be our favorite player in a couple weeks.

Actually, that happened to former M*ch*g*n kicker Mike Lantry after he missed the game-winning field goal in the 1974 edition of The Game in Columbus (some would say he actually made the kick, and the refs blew the call). Lantry received an avalanche of support from both sides, particularly because of the striking image of a disconsolate Lantry walking back to the sidelines, alone, with not so much as a word or second glance from his teammates.
Author Michael Rosenberg pens a particularly interesting passage about the story and the piles of letters Lantry received from Ohio State fans (supportive, not mocking) in the wake of that game in his 2008 book War As They Knew It about Woody and Bo and the Ten Year War.

My band-wagon (recently) has been friendly-fire in the form of jokes.  I see that everybody here agree's the haters are a$$es.  Now, lets grey it up a little.  What about the jokes that belittle the whole career of a player.

Twitter is making people less literate and less polite and respectful, 140 characters at a time.  I can't seem to express ides in less than 140 characters so I won't be getting a Twitter account anytime soon, but at the same time I won't condemn anyone who has one.  Still, it is stunting human communication, IMHO.

I like Gardner.
I was really hoping for him to have a better season than he has had!  I love my Buckeyes and love to see Michigan lose, however, for our BIG 10 to gain respect and get recognized has a tough conference (like we use to be)  We need Michigan to be just as tough as we are!
Imagine if Michigan, TOSU, Wiscy, Mich St., Penn St., Nebraska, started dominating all non-conference games and Bowl Games!  BIG 10 would be looked at more seriously.
Hell, who knows, maybe Minnesota is willing to step up and be one of them to be included!
But back to this Gardner kid, he has talent and seems like he has a good head on his shoulders, its a shame that people forget he is human and still a kid!!!   The internet world is destroying a lot of integrity in this world. (Kids these days do not understand what integrity is)
Gardner is just a kid who made a bad choice in choosing Michigan!  LOL  :)
Hey, we all make mistakes at a young age, right? In all seriousness I hope this kid turns things around and can win the rest of his games.... Except against us.
Go Bucks!

Agreed. I am also a huge fan of gardner.
I really like it when he improvises and tries to do some kind of johnny manziel impersonation and just blindly lobs the ball in the general vicinity of 1 WR and 6 defensive players. That's when he is at his best IMO!

BierStube's picture

Maybe I am just out of touch with the times.  I don't tweet ... heck the whole thought of it sounds less than masculine to me.  I cannot pretend I understand what a teenager, 20 somethings, or even 30 somethings faces on a day to day basis from modern social protocol.  So I won't.  That being said, I do find the thought of twitter very intrusive and very impersonal.  What ever happened to sitting down with someone, having the beverage of your choice, and ending the conversation with a good hearty handshake?  (I do realize the irony of posting this on a social forum!)  That being said, this forum is a bit different than twitter.  We have great thinkers, comedians, Debbie downers, poets, fanatics, realists ..etc.  Bottom line, this is a community with folks from all walks of life.  The members of this forum are a nice cross section of society in general.  I just don't see where twitter or tweeting affords any user a similar sense of community.  Maybe is it a rush to know you are following some of the greatest athletes or actors of a given generation, but do they really know who you are and are conversations meaningful?  I do feel for the kids of today (as well as my own) having to deal with things I really don't understand and probably never will.  In closing, I find twitter to be the modern day version of a beat-up panel van cruising thru the neighborhood.
Maybe someone will explain the fascination of twitter to me but from the many threads I have seen concerning the subject I doubt my mind will change.  Then again, I use to hate e-mail too!

Gardner is handling things well with those kinds of people. They really need to get a life if they feel like they have to bash a kid who is going out there playing his best. It's already hard to play QB and even harder to play QB in Division I FBS football. And then factor in playing QB without an offensive line to protect you. Holy crap, talk about being setup to fail.

Sean N's picture

Something's fishy with this story. My best hypothesis is that these tweets are actually coming from Buckeye fans or Spartans fans or some much less classy fanbase. I only know that Michigan Men wouldn't stoop to such behavior.

allbucksallthetime's picture

Those were my exact thoughts as I was reading through these posts.  That said, from all accounts Devin Gardner is a great young man and student-athlete.  He appears to be handling the 'hate' well.  One has to wonder why anyone should have to endure abuse most likely doled out by those unable, at any point in their own athletic careers, to do what he does.  Go Bucks!

avail31678's picture

The same way?  Really?  Did people really tweet Bauserman and say they hate him?

ShowThemOhiosHere's picture

Why do people do this?  I get that he's had a tough year, and I hate TTUN and still wouldn't tweet him.  However, people need something better to do with their lives.  If your team is playing shit football, go outside or clean the house or something.

Oldschoolbuck's picture

I guess it's Gardner's fault that he stepped up to play QB because his team needed him, when he could have (probably) been a pretty decent wideout; it's his fault that his O line couldn't protect him if they had M1A1 Abrams tanks; it's his fault that his OC is clueless when it comes to devising a game plan, let alone making in-game adjustments; it's Gardner's fault his position coach is so incompetent he would have taken Tom Brady and turned him into Brandon Weeden; it's his fault that his HC is a complete moron who can't string two coherent sentences together, doesn't seem to communicate with the press box or the coaches on the sideline during a game, and looks as lost as a calf staring at a new gate...
Yeah, Gardner is the reason scUM is falling apart like a tent in a tornado.

I really really really hate it when fans interject themselves into something they are not a part of. If Devin Gardner's play on the field-and as a result Michigan's-is having that much of a detriment on your life, than perhaps you should check your priorities. If an 18 year old chooses to rent himself out to a rival football warlord for 3 years instead of the football warlord you cheer for on Saturday's and you attack him via the internet, perhaps you should take a look at what you are doing with your life.
College fans nationwide, please take notice-We are nothing more than people who cheer for kids who play and grown men who coach a childs game. That is all football is. It is a game we played growing up that some people are blessed to be really really good at. When they are not as good as others, it doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things. If one player specifically is struggling, threatening to kill him doesn't undo his poor performance, nor does it have a direct affect on his future play. You aren't part of the team. You have nothing to do with their success on the recruiting trail or field of play.
GROW.THE.HELL.UP.
