TREE'D

For three quarters it looked like it was going to be a blowout, but then Oregon caught a few breaks to make it close. The end result, a 26-20 Stanford win, was likely the best possible result for Ohio State, anyway, as it knocked Oregon from the ranks of the unbeaten, but Stanford didn't close well enough to make a serious push to jump the Buckeyes in the polls.

Let's do this, Les Miles.

Two thoughts.
1. The importance of a power back like Hyde cannot be understated.  Oregon could have really used a more powerful running back tonight.

2. Best onside kicks I've ever seen, despite falling just short.  That grab on the last one was an incredible game saver.

DannyBeane's picture

Its nice to have fast people that can dance between tackles but nothing demoralizes you like a big guy that can punch you in the face and run it down your throat.

Seth4Bucks's picture

And lucky us, we have both! Hyde, Braxton Miller, and now lately Wilson too! Throw in a great O-line and it doesn't get much better than that.

ScarletNGrey01's picture

I was thinking the same thing when watching the game, Oregon would not match up well against the bucks because of Hyde and Miller and with our improving defense.  As I posted a minute ago, and the 11W staff apparently agrees (not that it took a rocket scientist to draw this conclusion) the near comeback at the end of the game really helps the bucks.  Oklahoma is a mediocre team, middle of the pack team in the B1G type of team at best, don't think Baylor should get enough credit for that to jump the bucks.

The will to win is not as important as the will to prepare to win. -- Woody Hayes

mtgerken's picture

The one thing that stuck out to me asides from the fact that our running game would tear them a new one, is that both team would not be able to stand up to our OL or DL, especially DL! Oregon's blitz package was awful all night. Stanford plays like a typical Big Ten team that Ohio State has dealt with (Wisconsin), and I don't think they would get much anywhere stackd up against our DL. Another thing I noticed was they were getting tired quick! Think about it, they really haven't had to play a full game all season, and against a power running team... forget about it.

The only chance of an FSU loss from here on out is Florida only because its an in-state rival.  I still 'aint got much hope in that happening. Alabama still has LSU, Auburn, and possibly Mizzou in SEC champ game.

Gone ham, be back soon...

onetwentyeight's picture

Playing Bama is ideal and putting the SEC demons to rest would be cathartic. But honestly, the odds are just against that. Bama has way more potential losses left than FSU does. If we are to make the championship game, it'll MOST LIKELY be through Bama stumbling to Les, Malzahn, in the SEC CG, or any combo of those 3. FSU plays ... nobody. Whatever. As long as we get to play to win it all, I don't care in the end.

You obviously haven't watched FSU play this year. Those guys are legit. Like mid-90s FSU juggernauts legit. Do I LIKE that? No. But I'm unbiased enough to acknowledge that reality, crappy as that may be for OSU.
[And yes I do want OSU to win out and not get passed over from the championship and will do my best rooting for a win by Wake forest this weekend. But let's be honest here. FSU has a cakewalk the rest of the way. ]

1. Baylor won't jump OSU
Honestly, half of the BCS voters are still guys that pay minimal attention and vote based on name recognition and media bias. In this case, it works for us. It's freaking BAYLOR. They play in arguably the only non AAC conference thats perceived as shakier than the ole b1g (Their conference's flagship school got ethered by BYU this year.) Baylor will not jump us. Even if they do, it won't be permanent. In the end of the day the powers that be in CFB won't allow a small texas private religious school that's never won shit to jump the largest public university in the nation with the largest (read: most $ making) fanbase in the land. Bank on it.
2. Stanford won't jump OSU
This was a "thing" until their last minute ... follies. I think its safe to say they don't look quite as "dominating" as when Jesse Palmer was slobbering all over them in the early 4th quarter. Again, fine by me because it just aids us.

3. FSU is the only team that matters, for our purposes
Right now, an Oregon loss alone (or even an Oregon + baylor loss) doesn't change our position. It potentially might, but FSU would have to lose at some point as well for this Oregon loss to have any positive impact on our chances. Otherwise, we're stuck playing this fraud-y soft Oregon team in the Rose Bowl for the Blue-Balls/Dry Humping/Kissing Your Cousin National Championship. I don't want that. You don't either. So FSU has to lose if we want to play Bama for all the marbles. HAve you looked at their schedule lately? Can anyone name one objectively challenging team left for them? Don't pull some "random ACC tomfoolery" BS or "they're gonna clemson" or whatever. Those are just nice platitudes we say to ourselves to convince ourselves that they will lose. Objectively speaking, there are no "stanfords" left on FSU's schedule. They play nobody with a remote chance of stopping them. Let alone winning. Which leads me to...

4. Our best bet is a Bama loss
Right now, this Bama team hasn't been tested. Their best win is against a very mediocre VaTech team that is maybe the what 4th best team in the ACC. They still have to face, 1.) the Mad Hatter this Saturday, in a rivalry where the away team somehow always wins. Plus, the cosmos is long overdue for some Grass Eatin shenanigans from Les. This one has upset potential written all over it. 2.) Malzahn in the Iron Bowl. People forget Auburn, with malzahn (and Cam) handed Saban's bama teams arguably their worst loss of this era. That 25 point 2nd half comeback was as bad as any Saban Bama team has ever looked. And now the man who masterminded that is back at Auburn, in the HC seat, and his team has only 1 loss. If all goes well, malzahn could very well take down Bama for us too. 3.) Whoever they face in the SEC CG, should they make it. Admittedly, the SEC East is kind of shitty now and the #MEDIA hasn't realized it yet. So maybe thsi isn't much of a challenge for them. But who knows.

Buckeye in Illini country's picture

We would most likely play Stanford (not Oregon) in the Rose Bowl if FSU and Alabama win out.  And Alabama's best win is not against Va Tech, it is against Texas A&M.

Columbus to Pasadena: 35 hours.  We're on a road trip through the desert looking for strippers and cocaine... and Rose Bowl wins!

onetwentyeight's picture

True. I guess that win didn't register to me as a "good" win because while I did remember they beat A&M, the impression you got coming out of that game was, "Johnny Manziel just made the vaunted Bama defense look like swiss cheese. Again." Basically, it was a win (and definitely their best, on paper) but it's hard to call it a good win IMO when the supposed strength of your team gets torn up and you eeke out a win basically because A&M defense is still Big12 caliber.
I also think Stanford will have another stumble down the road. As good as they looked for 3 quarters, they still had a mini-scare towards the end. And they DID lose to Utah. Plus their schedule the rest of the way is pretty brutal.

fear_the_nut70's picture

This is pretty good analysis.  Was arguing with (admittedly OSU haters) who claim that even if Alabama lost they might get in over us because of (fill in the blank--SEC bias, OSU fatigue, imaginary Bama S.O.S.).  I personally can't see that happening, but be prepared for this to be the next narrative if Bama loses a game.  Does anyone think this could happen?

Eph97's picture

Moron Jesse Palmer kept saying he ranks Stanford "subjectively" based on how they're playing now and if they play "Stanford football" they can beat anyone. When he tried to discount the loss to Utah, at least David Pollack had the good sense to say it was an albatross losing to an unranked team. If OSU plays like they did against PSU, no one is beating them either. Either that suit is too tight or too much hair gel is affecting Jesse Palmer!

buckskin's picture

Man I got tired of Jesse Palmer talking about how if Stanford is playing their best, then they are one of the top 2-3 teams in the country.  Hey Jesse, they didn't play their best one Saturday and LOST against a crap Utah team so shut the trap.
He's probably pissed at Urban for leaving Florida.  I was hoping the Georgia grad Pollack would knock him out.

2011, the Seminoles  stumbled into Winston-Salem, N.C., and turned over the ball five times, saw their starting tailback go down with a potentially career-threatening injury, forced EJ Manuel to play the second half with an injured shoulder and lost their third straight game, 35-30.

airbuckeye's picture

Im thrilled the Ducks lost but i was not at all impressed with Stanford at all even though they controlled the clock. But they are not that great either leaving 5 TD's on the field and having to settle for FG's instead. They could have easily lost that game .
And Baylor may have won but come on what team are we talking about Okl who is one of the most over rated teams when it comes to playing in the so called big games. Big bad Bob could beat a team made up off $2 hookers.

bigbadbuck's picture

But Craig James could. His team would kill those hookers!
