A close victory over Iowa didn't leave voters impressed.

Florida State's impressive win over then-No. 3 Clemson clearly got the attention of voters. The victory is the best for any team this season and came on the road in a feared environment and stadium. All the Seminoles did was roll by the tune of 51-14. It vaulted them past Ohio State in both the Coaches and AP Poll.

There are now 10 undefeated teams, down from 16 just two weeks ago. Four Big Ten teams are ranked in each poll — Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Nebraska.

I don't agree with a lot of what I see on either poll but at this point, the AP poll has it much closer to being right than the coaches...which is strange as I usually agree with the coaches more than any other polls. As for OSU, at this time, all three teams ahead of OSU should rightfully be there. FSU could be the best team out there. They were scary good last night.
LSU is still not a bad team, but they should have dropped more. They lost to an unranked team & should be closer to the bottom.

LSU is similar to UGA in that their first 2 losses don't count.  The third one got UGA booted from the polls.

If you told me before the season that Baylor, Texas Tech, Missouri, and Miami would all 4 be in the top 10 at the same time I would have probably laughed.

Riggins's picture

Auburn sprints from 24th to 11th in the AP Poll after shredding that tenacious Aggie defense.

OSU069's picture

While I definitely think they are overrated, you have to give Gus Malzan(sp?) a lot of credit for turning them around from how awful they were last year.

Riggins's picture

It's not like he's coaching up a bunch of 2-star Rudys. That team is loaded with "Rivals" talent. Chizik was just awful.

BME_Buckeye's picture

The same guy who led Auburn to a national title with Cam Newton?

Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.

DaiTheFlu's picture

BME, I think what you mean is Newton led CHIZIK to the title; not the other way around. Gene has been a mediocre, if not downright awful, coach his entire career. He lucked out in 2010 by getting one year out of a legendary QB talent, which is the anomaly in Chizik's career. Everything occurring before and after Cam the Scam is more representative of his career.

We can't stop here; this is bat country...

Kaceybrown's picture

I think Gus deserved more credit auburn success while he was under chizik too, look what happened after he left... He had Arkansas state doing really well for what they are.

Riggins's picture

@BME
Daitheflu covered it all.  Chizik basically stayed out of his own way and let Newton and Malzahn (the then offensive coordinator who is their current head coach) work their magic.
I'm genuinely laughing out loud that you think Chizik is good.  I guess Dilfer belongs in the HoF because he "led" the 2000 Ravens to a Super Bowl.

Kurt's picture

Wish I had it in writing somewhere, but in conversation with my girlfriend in August I thought Auburn could see 8 or 9 wins this year.  Last year was an aberration, Chizik inexplicably went away from everything Malzahn had been building the roster around.  By bringing Gus back so quickly they're back on track.

armybuckinva's picture

If Texas A&M and Missouri stay in the Big 12 they would be very well represented in this poll.
5, 7, 9, 12, 13, 15, if you throw Nebby in there at 21 that's seven teams there and Texas isn't there so you have potential for eight teams.  The Big 12 commissioner must be kicking himself.

Riggins's picture

The Big 12 commissioner must be kicking himself.

The Texas Administration must be kicking themselves.  Fixed.

Nice call.  I stand corrected.

I doubt TAMU or Missouri would get nearly as much love as they do now in the SEC.

buckifishr's picture

You beat me to the comment. I would expect a&m to be near 20th if still in the big xii, and Missouri would be receiving a lot of criticism for out of conference schedule and be near 15th.

GR8TBUCKS's picture

C'mon, seriously?  Those are Sec teams in their second year, that is why they are good. If they were in any other conference they would be turrible. If they were BIG teams they would be deservedly around 24 or 25, along with all of the other slackers.

J.Mo's picture

Clemson should fall out of the top 15. They got owned! Texas A&M and LSU don't belong in the Top 15 either. I seriously think Wisconsin is much better than those two teams. South Carolina should fall out of the top 25 completely. I know Mizzou is now in the SEC but they don't deserve to pass Baylor! Baylor has been scoring more points than people usually do playing NCAA on Xbox.
This is BS - outside the 'Bama, the SEC is nothing special.

CC's picture

Clemson's big win is now against an unranked UGA team.  Their next biggest win is against Cuse.

Wisconsin definitely deserves to be in the top 15 by the way!

Clemson's previous ranking was mostly based on their win over Georgia in the early season.  As it turns out Georgia's not that good - so the first time they faced a good team, they get hammered.
Florida State, for their part have not really beaten anyone either except the fraudulently ranked Clemson squad.
It's the ESPN effect.  All you have to do is beat and SEC team and you're golden.
Can't say that our wins are more impressive for sure at this point....but the ACC is certainly no better than the BIG.  Maybe Miami or UF will bail us out.

BROSEPH's picture

"It's the ESPN effect.  All you have to do is beat and SEC team and you're golden."
Just stop.  I'm tired of these types of comments.  Look at SECs recent run of major bowl games.  Until that changes, as long as they continue to beat other conference's top teams, they are at the top.  This season may show that their run of dominance is ending, but they will still be well respected.  I sure as hell wouldn't want to play Georgia in a bowl game.  Even with their losses, at full strength I think they're one of the best teams in the country.

Deadly Nuts's picture

If i'm correct alot of Georgia's injuries are season ending. If this is the Georgia team we will see for the rest of this season they should not be ranked.

jaxbuckeye's picture

You are the one that needs to stop....smoking crack.  So based on the accomplishments of the top team in that conference, the rest gets a pass?  Based on YOUR logic the B10 is the best conference with 19 straight wins.  Your garbage about Georgia is just that, garbage.  We hear EVERY year about how good Georgia is going to be.  That nearly same team was TIED going into the 4th last year against a Nebraska team that gave up 60 to tOSU and 70 to a 5 loss Wisconsin team.  tOSU would demolish Georgia in bowl game.  It would look like the FSU beat down on Clemson.
I give respect to the champion, NOT their entire conference.

Haybucks's picture

Maybe Alabama dropped MSU because they don't want to play a team that beat Georgia in a bowl game.

BROSEPH's picture

Um, SEC won 6 bowl games last season.  Not just Alabama came into this season with a lot of respect.  They have 16 more bowl wins in the BCS era than any other conference.  You can call it a self fulfilling prophecy all you want, but the proof is in the wins/losses.  That conference down in the south east has been on top, and until they lose, they deserve that respect.   And don't give me the "Well Michigan almost beat USCe, Nebraska almost beat Georgia".  Almost.
Oh, you give respect to the champion?
2006    Florida    SEC
2007    LSU    SEC
2008    Florida    SEC
2009    Alabama    SEC
2010    Auburn    SEC
2011    Alabama    SEC
2012    Alabama    SEC
Notice something similar among those?

FROMTHE18's picture

IMO theres quite a gap between OSU and the top 3. Not suggesting OSU cant play with any of those teams but I just dont see the same quality of team out of Ohio State as I do Bama, Oregon, or Florida State. Wins a win and sure FSU, Oregon, and Bama could all lose one but if we had to face one of those teams, I wouldn't like our chances at winning.

cplunk's picture

Missouri beat an awful Florida team- an unranked Florida team- and the AP writers vote them fifth.
The AP poll is a complete joke.

BME_Buckeye's picture

Actually at the time, Florida was ranked #22 and after their lost is now unranked.

Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.

Riggins's picture

@BME
You don't get credit for where a team was ranked when you played them. You get credit for where they finish.
Let's say this year, hypothetically, that Cal went 11-1 and ended up ranked 5th at the end of the season.  You're saying Ohio State would get credit for a win against an "unranked" Cal team instead of the #5 team they are.  Bad logic.
Florida is getting unmasked and Missouri shouldn't get credit for beating a Florida team that was an unjustified preseason media darling.

bucksfan92's picture

And a week after they beat an unranked UGA team.  Quite hilarious how a joke team rockets up the polls beating 2 unranked SEC teams, isn't it.
Oh well, I stand by my preseason claim that all OSU has to do is get to 13-0 and they are assured of a spot in the NCG.  October and November rankings are nothing but a novelty.

Deadly Nuts's picture

UCLA inexplicably barely moved as well. I just don't get it sometimes.

CC's picture

So many other teams above them lost to bad or to unranked teams, where they lost to a good Stanford team in a close game.
I don't get the Clemson ranking where they are still in the top 10.  They have played 1 team in the top 25 and they were destroyed.

GlueFingers Lavelli's picture

24-10?  I'll admit I thought Mora had UCLA dialed in and ready to ride Hundley into a BCS game if not the title. I doubt anyone overlooks Stanford, but you have to wonder if they may have been looking ahead to Oregon.  I won't be shocked to see UCLA beat Oregon.

This is why it's important to have a lead foot and not let up.  I'm not the first to say it, but that is how you execute a "statement" game.  If we get the "D" shored up, we can have a statement game or two this season.

What we can't do in the air we'll do on the ground.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

Not really. If Ohio State had blown out Wisconsin, and NW, they wouldn't get credit for it because of how "bad" the BigTen is.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

btalbert25's picture

I don't buy that for a minute.  Sure there would be some making those comments but if Ohio State would be blasting teams the way Oregon and FSU are they absolutely would be getting credit for it.

3cent's picture

No they wouldn't, the "experts" would be saying that they are blowing out bad teams and have not played a quality opponent.  Similar to the way they treat this 19 game winning streak.

buckeyeguy0615's picture

@3CENT uhhhh look at Baylor.  They're getting all kinds of attention, and they haven't played anyone.

bigbadbuck's picture

Baylor isn't Ohio State....

Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.

I think if OSU beats a team in the B1G championship similar to what Wisco did last year to Nebraska, I think everyone will give them credit, regardless of how shitty the conference is this year.

Don't give up... Don't ever give up.

ChazBuckeye's picture

I agree with BVW on this one.  Even if OSU would've blown Wiscy and NW out of the water, the media would spin it as 'tB1G' sucks and it wouldn't be as credible as many are hypothetically making it out to be.  No one knows for sure but if we're talking about how the media perceives OSU to be, it's pretty easy to figure out at this point....

Some people think we’re the hunted.I don’t feel that way at all. We’re the hunter.Everybody wants an angry football team.Everybody wants a team on edge and a hungry team.If you’re a hunter, that usually equates to being hungry.

It's not surprising with how SEC would have several bad losses, but it's okay, they'll boost unranked SEC teams up high to make up for the difference.  It has been like this for a while.  Nothing new.
Ohio State will need to focus on themselves and grind out the win for each game.  One game at a time.

And.... forget running up the score this week. From what we've seen from our DBs, with Robinson and the PSU TEs coming to town, we're going to need to score on (just about) every possession just to get a "W" this week.

That Guy's picture

I certainly don't think Clemson is a fraud, and don't think OSU would blow them out and right now idk if they'd even beat them.  Maybe not the popular opinion but I do think Florida st. is just that good. Calling Clemson a fraud is doing a disservice FSU. They are a very good football team, but this year FSU might be a great one.

northcampus's picture

Vanderbilt backing out on OSU (and Northwestern) is looking worse and worse for the B1G as the weeks progress.  Even with Vandy being a lower-tier SEC team, having them match up against both OSU and NW would have given fans (and media pundits) a common opponent to compare OSU's worth against when looking at supposed teams that have 'played somebody' that the media perceives to be a worthy adversary.
As far as Clemson goes, they lost by almost 40 on their home field at night.  I don't care who beat them, any team that looks that bad at home isn't a top 10 team (unless Florida State ends up winning the BCS championship).
The SEC 'cannibalism' talk is laughable.  Georgia (not matter how many injuries they have) lost to a Vanderbilt team playing a back-up QB.  If Georgia was truly a top 5-7 team at the beginning of the year, there is no way they lose that game.  The SEC built-in advantage of stellar recruiting classes should allow these schools to have sufficient depth to withstand a few injuries.  Florida looks like Michigan State (strong D, no O).  LSU has no D and a QB that is probably a better fit at Cincinnati and the AAC (where he was going to go after UGA).  And Tennessee somehow now being decent is just as worse.  That Oregon game was an absolute slaughter.  If the SEC is anywhere near it's been in the past, Tennessee wins 1 or 2 league games, tops.

You can't spell chump without UM's picture

I know we're all talking about all the overrated SEC teams, but, Oklahoma should not be ranked 12th. They got destroyed by a bad Texas team and they were in a dogfight against Kansas. They should be rated about mid to late teen range.
