The Best Damn Band in the Land has a history of excellence at Ohio State equal to even its football team. Unbeknownst to most, TBDBITL  began as a drum major corps during the 1879-80 school year.

It wasn't until the 1920's when Ohio State had a drum major with a flair for showmanship. Enter G. Edwin Essington, who by all appearances was a hustler of legendary proportions:

YOU CAN TELL BY THE WAY HE USE HIS WALK HE'S A LADY'S MAN... NO TIME TO TALK

The rest, as they say, is history. Ohio State's Library has a full look at other drum major firsts, such as the first African-American and woman drum majors. It's worth your time.

Nice look back at some of the history of TBDBITL, the drum majors and the contributions of Ms. Graf and Messrs Hudson and Livingston.

I am not very smart, but I recognize that I am not very smart.

True. His rather awesome nickname was "Tubby" (edit: they do call this out in the article)
Some other fun facts:

  • TBDBITL has had two female drum majors. Kathryn Mitchell was second, leading us during the 2003 season.
  • Before the passage of Title IX in 1973, there were no women in the band.
  • There's now a cap on how long you can be drum major. Dwight Hudson will be the last to have more than two seasons, barring some rule changes.

Another article about Tubby reveals other interesting bits about him, his legacy and what was happening in his time. His son states,

"As for his fame as a drum major ... well, we're a little biased. However, evidently he did leave his mark in the OSU stadium."

"left his mark" - what an understatement!

I think your with the band right? Could you please get someone to at least get the video from a good location and preferably in HD?  These phone videos or handheld videos do a great injustice to The Best Damn Band In The Land!

Thank you for sharing. We are blessed to have a band that performs at the level ours does. What game was the video game? I wish they would show every halftime show we do. I would rather see them perform than listen to talking heads bash our buckeyes.

Bury me in my away jersey, with my buckeye blanket. A diehard who died young. Rip dad.

PJTOBIN, the video game would be none other than the one where we beat down Nebraska at home last year. I live in Dallas and that was my very first game at the Shoe and boy did it NOT disappoint!!

TBDBITL is usually cut entirely out of network TV, but sometimes Script Ohio makes the cut.  I've always felt the networks have cheated the views by omitting the band's performance.  Fortunately, we now have the interweb and a growing appreciation of all things OHIO, which can be observed on the Youtube channel soon after the game.
