Ohio State travels to Byrd Stadium on Oct. 4.

In a year, the Big Ten will usher in a new era with the arrival of Maryland and Rutgers as the conference’s 13th and 14th members. Each school has been slotted to join the East Division, which houses five other programs, among them Ohio State.

It hasn’t been a secret whether the Buckeyes would play the Terrapins and Scarlet Knights. The divisional realignment assured that the teams would meet on a yearly basis. Now they know the cycle.

The Big Ten released its 2014 schedule Thursday afternoon and Ohio State travels to Maryland and hosts Rutgers. That means the Buckeyes will make two trips to the Washington/Baltimore metro area in 2014. The season opener is against Navy at M&T Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens.

Ohio State's cross-divisional games in 2014 are home vs. Illinois and at Minnesota.

Aug. 30 vs. Navy in Baltimore
Sept. 6 Bye
Sept. 13 Kent State
Sept. 20 Virginia Tech
Sept. 27 Cincinnati
Oct. 4 at Maryland
Oct. 11 Bye
Oct. 18 Rutgers
Oct.  25 at Penn State
Nov. 1 Illinois
Nov. 8 at Michigan State
Nov. 15 at Minnesota

Games in Baltimore and College Park in 2014? YEAH BUDDY
Also: I'm liking the switch to a nine-game conference slate. Kent State is the only cupcake on the schedule, and they're not even that much of one.

I know! I'm pumped. I live in Arlington VA and now get to see the Buckeyes twice in my own backyard (sorta).

re: 9-games - are you talking about 2015 and beyond or whenever? There's only 8 in 2014.

Denny's picture

Hah. Counting is tricky. The future looks even better though with a nine-game slate. 2014 just happens to have a pretty solid OOC schedule.

Taquitos.

Unky Buck's picture

I believe they're looking to start that in 2016. I think he was more alluding to the OOC schedule that is actually formidable and worth talking about with only Kent being the non-major conference team. We'll have 1 team from the Big 5 and 3 from the other 5 (or whatever they're called now. Basically Cincinnati and Navy will be in the old Big East and it'll probably be the most formidable of the smaller conferences). With a 9 game schedule, Kent would likely be the odd man out.

...

lljjgg's picture

And the funny thing is that even Kent State was a solid team last year (11-3). Don't know if they'll drop back off with Coach Hazell leaving for Purdue, but we shall see. Definitely one of our stronger schedules lately -- which obviously isn't saying much given that the B1G has been down. But Cincinnati's always a solid team, Virginia Tech @ the shoe will be an exciting game, Rutgers has been solid, Maryland has some potential, I look forward to it!

GoldenBearBuckeye's picture

LLJJG, did you mean to say VTech would be exciting or did you mean the game with Frank Beamer's Hokies would be competitive as opposed to exciting.

cplunk's picture

I am so freaking excited. I live in NVA so most years I only get back to Cbus for one game. 2014? I'm going to get to go to both Navy and Maryland and not take any time of work to do it. Fantastic.

Good schedule

I'm just happy to be here

Hello_Heisman's picture

I just took a look at Michigan's schedule and I already hate it.  @MSU, @OSU, @Northwestern.  That means for 2 years running, Michigan gets road games at Northwestern and MSU.  Throw in the fact that the Notre Dame game that year is on the road as well and the only mildly attractive home game is against Penn State.  Bah Humbug!

Denny's picture

I don't know, man. That schedule looks fine to me for Michigan to play.

Taquitos.

buck4's picture

I was just about to write that I bet there is a lot of Butthurt coming from UM about that schedule.  In all seriousness though, that's some shit

Hello_Heisman's picture

It's not the world's toughest schedule, but the home slate is terrible.  No attractive games at all.  Most likely all of the good opponents UM plays in 2014 will be on the road.  I can't think of a season in my lifetime where Notre Dame, MSU and OSU have all been road games in the same year, but looks like that will be the case in 2014.

60% of the time it works.....every time

buck4's picture

and NW which may likely be the 3rd best team in the B1G.
Edit: I think having to play @ State 2 years in a row was a serious oversight

Hello_Heisman's picture

Yep.  Definitely not an optimal schedule, and the worst part is that it creates some imbalance going forward as well.  I'm not as concerned about the NW part because they'll be in the Western Division so they'll roll off from time to time.  And after 2014, Michigan and ND won't be playing each other.  But it will feel weird from here on out to play MSU and OSU at home in the same year followed by road contests against both the following season.  It's kind of like a "feast or famine" situation and makes every other year seem a lot less attractive from a home scheduling perspective.

60% of the time it works.....every time

buck4's picture

And Rutgers still may have gotten the worst of it.  Crossover games with @Nebraska and Wisconsin.  Also they play @OSU, @MSU, and @Maryland.  Ouch

Hello_Heisman's picture

I read elsewhere that it may have had to do with the whole PSU/OSU/MSU/UM foursome.  B1G was trying to work something out so that every year, none of those teams had to face all of the other 3 on the road followed by the next year all at home.  So I guess to make the numbers work, they had to set up Michigan going to MSU two years in a row.
If anything, this just further emphasizes why I think 2013 is such an important season for Michigan.  If they can beat OSU this year and win the conference, they'll have a pretty good story to tell as a program, even if they stumble a little in 2014.  If 2013 is another 8 win season, that's a lot of pressure coming into 2014 considering the schedule.

60% of the time it works.....every time

RedStorm45's picture

With the October Bye and B1G's moratorium on November night games - there's not a lot of options for night games.  Va Tech hopefully (unless they do a 3:30 like Miami).  Rutgers? Maybe.  Maryland? Probably, but it's on the road.  At Penn State? Probably an evening/night affair.

Mike Honcho's picture

More byes in the middle of the schedule. I wonder if that's Urbans doing.

brandonbauer87's picture

I believe it's just the way the calendar falls certain years causing 2 bye weeks.

BME_Buckeye's picture

Wisconsin schedule is softer than a pillow! No Michigan, Penn State or Ohio State. Like honestly, what deal did they make with the devil to get a favorable basketball and football schedule.

Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.

droessl's picture

The line for "Big Ten Championship Game" should be XX'ed out underneath Maryland, Rutgers, Indiana, Purdue, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Penn State.

buckeyenut10's picture

Rutgers and M*chigan got absolutely hosed for 2014. It's obvious (between Nebraska the last two years and Rutgers/Maryland this time) that the B1G doesn't want new comers to do too well their first year.

M*chigan @OSU, @MSU, @ND? Ouch.

Hello_Heisman's picture

Minnesota might have gotten it worse than everyone.  Over in the West, they'll have to play NW, Nebraska and Wisconsin.  And for their crossover games, they managed to draw both Michigan and OSU.  Somebody in the B1G office hates the Gophers.

So 2014 will be the year that we won't have to hear "look at their schedule" when it comes to Ohio State. The non-conference schedule should be fun.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

Hello_Heisman's picture

Yes - in 2014, I and many other Michigan fans will not be able to ridicule OSU's non-conference schedule because it will be legitimate again.  No such reprieve for 2013 - that non-conference schedule is one cupcake after another.

60% of the time it works.....every time

tennbuckeye19's picture

I'm not arguing that OSU's 2013 OOC schedule is a joke, clearly it is, but let's not act like UM is playing the best competition in CFB in theirs. UM plays 2 MAC teams in Central Michigan (7-6 last year) and Akron (1-11 the last 2 seasons), a UConn team that although they're in a power conference (if we can call the Big East that) won 5 games last year, and Notre Dame.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

I was going to bring that up, but we did this dance a few weeks ago.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

Hello_Heisman's picture

Tenn - you're right.  I'd say Michigan's 2013 non-conference schedule is moderate at best while OSU's is an utter joke.  If I was a teacher grading them, I'd give Michigan's schedule a C- and OSU's an F.

60% of the time it works.....every time

Buckeyeneer's picture

Yeah, its the worst OSU schedule in 20 years. While I generally don't like Gene Smith, I am happy that our OOC schedule gets dramatically better going forward.

Same. If it's one thing our secondary has to improve on it's tackling in space. And Sonny Dykes loves those quick screens. It's gonna be a night game and the Berkeley crowd is gonna be crazy.

How do you know it's gonna be a night game? I haven't seen a time posted anywhere for the game yet.

Spoke to someone in the Athletic Department at Cal. Most of my friends are Cal Alum. Used to live a few blocks away from campus. Nothing will be announced until late July/early August. That's when single game tix are available for alumni.

GoldenBearBuckeye's picture

Berkeley crowd crazy??
Maybe for Stanford and then we only have 2/3 of the stadium.
They can't fill memorial for USC.  There will be 15,000 seats open for tOSU.  The band can be purposely disruptive, but I anticipate the atmosphere to be somewhere between Indiana and Purdue.
Been some time since I held Cal season tix, but night games are almost as rare in Strawberry Canyon as they are at the Shoe.
Totally agree that the short passes and screens are a big concern for us

SilverBulletNYC's picture

Oh yeah, their crowd sucks. But with this being their BIG OOC game and 1st BIG game under Dykes, it's gonna be crazy. Also, tOSU has a huge fan base in the Bay Area. I used to go to Zeke's and Pete's in SF and it would be filled with Buckeye fans. I wouldn't be surprised to see 10K Buckeye fans at this game.

The South will NOT rise again!

GoldenBearBuckeye's picture

Agree in re 10,000 Buckeyes.
Don't think Dykes will move the meter.  Saw Theder's first game, Holmoe, and Snyder.  Mariucci barely moved the meter, and Joe Kapp actually energized us for about 3 games.
Except for 5,000 drunk students (think Cameron Crazies) the band is the only thing that rocks there.  And it is the (distant) second best band in these United States.

HolyBuckeye1093's picture

Looking at the 2013 and 2014 schedules, the toughest game for OSU will prob be @TSUN in 2013. It is not far fetched at all that OSU goes undefeated in the regular season 3 years in a row! Braxton staying healthy is the most important factor in a run like that. But we will have the most talent on the field vs anyone we play.

Dougger's picture

That schedule is very good. Navy in Maryland, Va Tech (90% chance night game?) and then Cincy finally gets their whooping they've been asking for.

I like football

1stYrBuckIClub's picture

This may be selfish, but I'm actually disappointed with the new schedule. Why? Because Northwestern is the only B1G team I haven't seen the Bucks play in person, and that was originally a home game on the old 2014 schedule. Guess I'll have to wait a few more years for that (of course they announced it after the away game ticket purchase for this year).

tdible2132's picture

It's crazy how much easier the western division is going to be.  I could see a streak of like 10 straight years where an East team wins the B1G Championship Game.  Wisconsin isn't going to keep it up IMO, Nebraska will be Nebraska (good but never great).  Northwestern has a real shot to be a annual contender in the west with the way their recruiting, and that's just flat out amazing.  Props to Fitzgerald.  Regardless though, the East is loaded with the top 3 brands in the Big Ten (OSU, UM, PSU).

tdible2132's picture

I can't argue that it makes sense Geographically though.  Still wish they would have made the divisions more even.

Pretty east coast heavy schedule there. Now if the Bucks could only head up to the Northeast.

Optimistic Buckeye Pessimist's picture

You are talking trash about his decision and threatening with something that you will have no part in. It's like calling someone an idiot and then when they come to beat you up you because of what you said, you hide behind your friends.  I guess what I'm saying is that its an overly "Internet tough guy hidden behind a blog" thing to say.  It's not about sensitivity, its about you sounding like that or the bitter ex. The good people on here care as much about the university and its overall representation as they do football. Its why people speak up about tweeting recruits. We should pride ourselves on being tbdfitl

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

This is without a doubt the most ridiculous thing i've ever read on 11w. There's something wrong if you think that is me talking trash. How is saying "Time to show Diggs how bad his decision was." threatening?
I won't pretend i'm some billy bada**, but i've never said anything on 11w that I wouldn't say to a player, poster, or coach face to face.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

Optimistic Buckeye Pessimist's picture

I'm not trying to pick anything with you but just explaining something that I thought you weren't seeing when you called out the sensitivity of this site. But I am curious as to what exactly you personally were going to show to this former recruit that would inform him of his "bad decision" to attend a university close to home, not to mention how well he did in his first season.  The reality is that it appears he made a great college choice.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

By Ohio State blowing his team out. Is it really that hard to figure out? My team sucks, but hey, since I had a great year that means I made the right choice. He said he wanted to win "championships" in college. Unless Clemson, or FSU implode, I don't see that happening.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

Optimistic Buckeye Pessimist's picture

Look. You made a comment and people reacted differently than you expected. I have tried to explain to you how this could happen and you just won't try to understand a different point of view other than your own.  You weren't downvoted for anything you said despite calling my post one of the most ridiculous things you've read on the site and saying that something must be wrong with me. So we've had our discussion and nothing has changed except now I'm done trying.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

Because it was ridiculous. You would think I said "F* Diggs!!111!!! He's an idiot for choosing the Terps". My comment was simple, with no hidden meaning.

BME_Buckeye's picture

Meh, its ok I don't take downvotes to serious. I agree with you on the Maryland and Rutgers addition; I was never a huge fan of it as they really brought nothing to a table in a conference that's already struggling with its football image. I shouldn't be so quick to bash newcomers so I'll keep my fingers cross and hope they can bring something to the table. However, that doesn't mean I'm happy with the schedules most teams got. Sigh!

Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.

Alright can anyone confirm this?  I live about an hour outside of Clemson.  Rumor around here is that Clemson and Ohio State are working on getting a game scheduled at titans stadium in Nashville.  I'm guessing it could possibly be in that September 6 weekend where we have the bye week?
