I'm calling Bullshit that anyone is cooler than James Dean. Coolness is measured on a scale of James Dean; you rank between Screech and James Dean.

Sorry, I gotta disagree - the pouty, angst-ridden adolescent thing never seemed that cool to me. If we're talking actors, Humphrey Bogart and Steve McQueen all day over Dean. Will Smith is pretty cool, too. I'd mention Collin Farrell, but he seems pissed off all the time and cusses to an extent that's maybe uncool.

Of course, out of those four, I think only Farrell went to college (ironic?).

My counterpoint to that is that James didn't have the opportunity later in life to become the cool dude he was destined to become. Given the chance to make it to Bogart's ripe old age, I feel James would have made the transition to defining what cool was for that generation as well.

Good point - fair enough. Also in Dean's defense, he was playing very young roles (he was in early 20s) at a time when youth "rebellion" - to be culturally popular - had to be channeled in certain ways. He was part of a process that was chipping away at things that would loosen up much more in the 1960s.

Besides, no question Dean was a very talented actor.

This isn't cool so much as powerful, but a lot of people don't know that the head of the Strategic Air Command (which controlled the nation's nuclear arsenal during the Cold War) was under the command of an OSU grad.

I am amused and amazed at seeing several people on that list who came within a credit or two of getting their degree. It's like running 25.9 miles of a marathon and then detouring to the tavern on the corner.

Agreed. And I think Brando would've taken Dean in a fight. Marlon was ahead of his time with the weightlifting, while Dean was a built like a teenage girl.
