Obviously, this is horribly subjective but here's your top 10:

  1. Missouri: Brad Pitt
  2. Oregon: Ken Kesey
  3. Syracuse: Lou Reed
  4. Wisconsin: Butch Vig
  5. UCLA: James Dean
  6. Illinois: Hugh Hefner
  7. Harvard: Norman Mailer
  8. Ohio State: Roy Lichtenstein
  9. Colorado State: John Amos
  10. Marquette: Chris Farley

I'm calling Bullshit that anyone is cooler than James Dean. Coolness is measured on a scale of James Dean; you rank between Screech and James Dean.

In my completely objective opinion, this is correct.  --Guy who was named after him.

Sorry, I gotta disagree - the pouty, angst-ridden adolescent thing never seemed that cool to me. If we're talking actors, Humphrey Bogart and Steve McQueen all day over Dean. Will Smith is pretty cool, too. I'd mention Collin Farrell, but he seems pissed off all the time and cusses to an extent that's maybe uncool.
Of course, out of those four, I think only Farrell went to college (ironic?).

Steve McQueen, Steve McQueen. The coolest goddamned motherfucker on the silver screen. (I saw DBT last night and have been singing this all day)

My counterpoint to that is that James didn't have the opportunity later in life to become the cool dude he was destined to become. Given the chance to make it to Bogart's ripe old age, I feel James would have made the transition to defining what cool was for that generation as well.

Good point - fair enough. Also in Dean's defense, he was playing very young roles (he was in early 20s) at a time when youth "rebellion" - to be culturally popular - had to be channeled in certain ways. He was part of a process that was chipping away at things that would loosen up much more in the 1960s.
Besides, no question Dean was a very talented actor.

And doesn't Hugh Hefner almost by definition have to come in second? Sides of a coin, my friend.

I'm with XC...James Dean needs to be #1 overall. But Roy Lichtenstein is also my favorite artist, so I'm glad that he's high on this list. Images like this are just fan-freaking-tastic...

Yes, it was, thanks. If the list were grads who are/were badasses as opposed to cool, Curtis LeMay might have helped push Ohio State up the list.

Cool list, thanks for posting

I had forgotten that Vince Doria, the Senior VP and Director of News for ESPN and a former Ohio newspaper sports editor/writer is an OSU alum. There's a conversation starter.

yang-mills theory is as revolutionary to modern physics as einstein's theory of relativity...yet no mention of him on this list. what a travesty

I'll buy the arguments on Dean and Hef, but that Marquette guy is awww-some.

colour me ignorant, but i had no idea Roy L was from Ohio State. I have had the girl on her back piece in my man cave forever...forced into a corner by the girl, but she is still there.

This isn't cool so much as powerful, but a lot of people don't know that the head of the Strategic Air Command (which controlled the nation's nuclear arsenal during the Cold War) was under the command of an OSU grad.

How cool is Butch Vig? So cool I had to google his name to see who he was/is. But maybe that's just me.

To err is human. Really sucking requires having yellow stripes on your helmet.

And me.  I honestly have no clue who Butch Vig is, and don't care enough to look it up.

Paul Newman is too cool for this list... but he did go to Ohio University for a while... but they're in the NIT... which by transitive property of coolness makes the NIT cool.

I clicked the link, and Raquel Welch is way the hell down at 53. Come on, people.
I am amused and amazed at seeing several people on that list who came within a credit or two of getting their degree. It's like running 25.9 miles of a marathon and then detouring to the tavern on the corner.

or you could be like me, and stop at mile 25 to ask all the Sailors why they have beards IN UNIFORM...(Yes, I did that at the NJ marathon in '05).

Don't forget, Marlon Brando was a pretty slick dude.

Don't give up... Don't ever give up.

Agreed. And I think Brando would've taken Dean in a fight. Marlon was ahead of his time with the weightlifting, while Dean was a built like a teenage girl.
