Taivon Jacobs Signs with Maryland

Yesterday the Washington Post broke the story that longtime Ohio State wide receiver commit Taivon Jacobs was considering signing with his home state school, Maryland.

The story caught Buckeye fans off guard a bit, as Jacobs decided against taking an official visit to Maryland a few weeks back and it was thought that he was solid to OSU. That turned out not to be the case, as Jacobs just signed his letter of intent with the Terrapins and faxed it in to head coach Randy Edsall.

With news in the story that Jacobs has a young daughter that he wanted to be close to, coupled with the recent additions of Corey Smith and Dontre Wilson at wide receiver for Ohio State, maybe it shouldn't have come as such a surprise that the flip to stay home was made.

The departure of Jacobs now gives the Buckeyes 25 commits in the class of 2013, and although he is talented, it is not thought of as a huge loss considering the group Urban Meyer has put together.

Can't be mad at him for staying home. Best of luck to ya, big guy.

I wish him luck and have no ill feelings towards him. You have to do what you have to do.

Obviously hurts to lose him, but after the committments of both Wilson and Clark who'd play similar positions do you think the staff didn't push to hard to keep him?

That's how it looks. Did we have the scholarship numbers to keep Jacobs while still adding Wilson and Clark, assuming no other decommits?
I'm glad the kid landed on his feet with the hometown school and wasn't left high and dry, and I'm certainly happy about the way this recruiting season has ended...but let's not pretend that if this same situation was taking place at a SEC school, there wouldn't be a lot of folks calling foul.

Gotta do what you gotta do. Seems like a great kid, best of luck to him. I would have made the same call.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

Best of luck young man, do the state of Maryland proud... happy that he stayed in conference

Cause I couldn't go for three

God bless him and his family and good luck to him! UNder different circumstances, I think he would have stuck with OSU.

Good Luck to Taivon. I really like this kid and think he made the right decision to stay closer to home with his new baby. Good luck at Maryland (except when you play us!)

Good luck, Taivon. He's a man for putting family first. You can't knock him for that...We'll be seeing you soon, Mr. Jacobs.

Am I missing something here?  Did he not have a child when he originally committed?  I just don't understand these kids.

Culp's Freaking Hill's picture

Not sure, but it doesn't matter at this point.  He made the right choice today to be the best father he can be.

He had the kid when he originally committed to OSU. I'm happy he took the time to think things over and stay close to home, it's probably better for his whole situation.

Best of luck to the kid.

BTW, there's a typo in the Grey Box. "Dontre Wilsono"

The fact that a young man of his age was able to view his situation with such a mature perspective is truly admirable. Good luck, fella.

Good Luck Taivon.  You made the right call for your family, that is #1.
And good luck to teams trying to stop you and Diggs on the edge together, yikes.

I just want to say I came into this thread to neg the shit out of anyone who said something stupid to this young kid making his life altering decision. I was pleasantly surprised that I got to upvote a bunch of classy commenters instead. Way to go everyone! Make the Great State of Ohio Proud!

Addendum: I hope we are all this understanding with any other recruit that makes this decision, we'll see later today with E-Z-E possibly. I have high hopes for everyone! Stay classy 11W!

Too funny, I was expecting the same thing.    Faith in (Buckeye) Humanity restored.

I'm thinking when Zach Smith reportedly told Jacobs not to enroll early and to enjoy his senior year, perhaps it had to do with his daughter and spending time with her.
I hate losing anyone in a class, but I wish him the best at Maryland.

This^^^Same thing I said last night...with what we got today...it doesn't matter much.
Good luck to him and his family.

thank you buckeye fans for reacting with class to this. I think this young man did a very admirable thing considering his circumstances at home.

Good luck Taivon. You take care of that little girl. You have more than just yourself to think about now. Very admirable.

Good decision to take care of your daughter young man. Get a degree and see where the world takes you. Best of Luck! We'll be seeing you soon! ;)

Good decision by the young MAN. Thats a big boy decision. Here's hoping everything works out him and his little girl.

Nice to see Taivon make a mature, intelligent decision.  Love to see that he's putting his family first.  Best of luck young man!

Who was the speedster from Maryland a couple of years ago?  He came and played a little WR as a freshman.  Then he transferred somewhere.  Whatever happened to him?  Did he do well?

BucksfanXC's picture

Lamar Thomas? Not sure what he's doing now.

Wasn't he Flash Thomas? Im pretty sure he went to like Arizona, ASU or New Mexico for some reason

Dr. Kenneth Noisewater's picture

It was Lamaar Thomas.    Transferred to New Mexico.   2012 was his senior year, had 15 catches for 165 yards and a TD.   29 catches, 360 yards and 3 TD's for his 4 years combined between OSU and new Mexico.

That's the guy.  Thanks for the info. Easier than googling or something.
I guess that's a good thing to keep in mind about this circus.  We're all so excited about these guys today, but some of them will be long gone in five years and we won't care or even remember their names.

Taivon is a "Grown man" for making a decision that is best for his family.  It hurts but Buckeye Nation understands.  We wish you and yours the best.

You want to see why 11w forums/threads are some of the better ones out there in College Football? Take a look at this thread. A lot of other sites/fan bases would have trashed this decision. Nothing but class here. Well done guys and gals.

Would rather he be a good dad than a Buckeye.  And I wanted him to be a Buckeye.  Good choice, son.

No but really, good luck Taivon. Personally I think it took some serious maturity to decide to stay closer to his daughter, which in the end will benefit him in his personal life more than he can imagine.

You can't argue with his decision. Family comes first, and he needs to take care of his daughter. Wish the kid good luck with his future. Hope he can make Maryland competitive by the time they join the B1G.
