Thomas Gets Little Help as Bucks Fall to Sparty

Deshaun Thomas was an absolute beast, scoring 28 points but it wasn't enough as the Buckeyes fell to Michigan State, 59-56, this afternoon in the Breslin Center.

Dialed In: DT hit 10/20 shots including 6/11 from downtown

His performance was Player of the Year caliber as no other Buckeye scored more than six points.

The Buckeyes had a chance, trailing 55-53 with :25 left but Aaron Craft missed a triple from the buzzer and with everyone crashing the glass, Keith Appling leaked out for a breakaway dunk to take a 57-53 lead.

Lenzelle Smith Jr. drained a triple on the ensuing possession cutting the deficit to 57-56 with 10.8 left but with OSU forced to foul, Appling hit a pair of free throws with 7.9 to play making it 59-56 bad guys.

Out of a timeout, Shannon Scott decided to run up the left sideline and launch a running three that had no chance. Game over.

Ohio State fell into a 13-2 hole early but responded with a 15-0 burst to take a 17-13 lead before eventually trailing 30-26 at the break.

The Buckeyes shot 40% from the floor and just 62% from the stripe (8/13) while committing 14 turnovers.

It's a tribute to Thomas that the game was even close as the Buckeyes continue to look for someone to step up offensively.

The loss drops Ohio State to 13-4 overall and 3-2 in conference.

Great play call by Matta on that last shot! /sarcasm

Bolt's picture

You really think that was the play Thad Matta called?

You really think Thad Matta calls plays?

I think the Walrus called that play in from upstairs, right?

The final play was a Bauserbomb.

Bolt's picture

Well I can assure you Thad Matta did not say in the timeout "Shannon, you're going to get the ball and passively dribble toward the corner, at which point you're going to heave a runner from 23 feet with your shoulders square to the baseline."
Based on what happened, I would imagine he told them that there's a good chance MSU is going to foul you when you cross half court. If they start to foul you just heave a shot and make the refs make a decision. If not get the ball to Deshaun who will be trailing behind you.
Obviously we saw Scott get trigger happy and just screw up, Thomas was sort of passively trailing behind without much purpose, so in effect he didn't do his job well enough either to make himself open and available (something Deshaun does all too often, especially when you watch him in a zone offense...which is part of the reason we struggle against the zone. Anywho)...not that it got to that point because by the time Payne came out to aggressively deny Thomas Shannon Scott was in the midst of the heave from hell.
I think Thad could've done a lot more to prepare his team for this situation and probably just out-thought himself with the "they're going to take the foul" situation...however, this was poor execution no matter what. Again, maybe that's something Thad should've considered before calling for a relatively inexperienced (in crunch time) sophomore PGs hands and putting into said PG's head the "they're going to foul us conspiracy."

Keep your head up Scott I thought they were going to foul too

Killer nuts's picture

I'm 99% sure Matta told him to take a shot if he felt like they were going to foul, as Scott dribbled up the floor the defender hand-checked him a little so Scott thought they were trying to foul and he shot. Not a bad play or bad coaching, just didn't go our way

I don't understand what my eyes just saw.

Tough loss, but it's not easy to win on the road in this conference.  Thomas is a player of the year candidate, and there isn't a team in the country that can come close to matching the ammount of pressure this team can bring on defense.

clogan1032's picture

Shannon Scott decision making rights should be revoked. Pass the the ball to Thomas or Smith Jr and give the team a shot.

Very good game, regardless, and I'm real happy for Thomas! Get 'em next time.

Im proud and encouraged of how our guys played tonight. Even with 14 turnovers or whatever we still were in it til the end.

Starting 1 and 2 guards go 4/15 from the field.  Pathetic.

Chris Lauderback's picture

Throw in Scott and it's 5/20. Not pretty. Not unusual either, unfortunately.

Bolt's picture

I dunno, does that last shot count as a shot or a turnover?

Baroclinicity's picture

Need more Ross in the 2nd half.

When you're holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

petebuc52's picture

Thanx somebody was watching what i saw..Ross played good D when he was in (because we all know if he's on the court his man scores 20..whatever), was agressive, made buckets, then the 2nd half comes and you dont see him until seconds left, a basket is needed, and shooters/scorers are needed on the court smmfh....I tend to not comment on O-state basketball because the mindset of the typical homer fan is different than the homer football fan.  Say one thing thad did wrong or you didnt agree with and here comes the final four/championship game/big 10 championship talk... I totally OVERSTAND and support that when it happend, however after a winable game with questionable coaching decsions I want to talk about what just happened not what happened last year etc..just my thoughts and as always Go Bucks...

Bolt's picture

Firstly, this isn't the NBA...it's not whether "his man" scores 20. College defense is about "help and recover" (especially when your guards play D as tight and aggressive as ours do and you have dick inside as a shotblocking eraser) and if one cog of the formula is out of position/not aware/out of sync it leads to open buckets for other guys' man.
That said, I don't think Q was playing bad defense either. I think he's just lost the trust of Thad a bit, which to an extent is understandable. The problem is, we need someone who can bury a 3-pointer consistently to stretch the defense at least a little to open driving lanes and ease the double team pressure on Thomas. Sometimes I feel like Q might be the only person I trust to consistently hit anything on this team outside of Thomas but he's shown so much more inconsistency elsewhere (not to mention it's not exactly like he fills it up when he does get his chances). I hope somehow we can find a gameplan that can get this guy more comfortably involved because he just doesn't seem that comfortable all the time. I see what you were watching as well. Thad needs to give him some more chances in the 2nd half IMO.

thatlillefty's picture

How bout some Sam Thompson as well.

Nick's picture

Yeah I thought they were going to foul which is why I thought he threw it up there but either Smith or Ross should have been in the middle of the court so he had somewhere else to go with the ball.

Killer nuts's picture

Yeah looking at it over and over I'm not really sure where Shannon was supposed to go with the ball. The only option was a drop off to Deshaun which was well defended

Four points and seven boards combined outta Rav and Amir.

Nick's picture

Yep missing Sully for sure.

Bolt's picture

This team is so poor inside it's unbelievable. If Amir Williams was even fractionally as good as we thought he might be coming out of high school this team would be outstanding.

Brandon Castel tweets:

After talking to Deshaun, it sounds like Shannon Scott did what the coaches told him to do on the last shot.

Coaches told Shannon to race down the floor and be ready for a foul. If he felt the foul coming, throw something up from behind the arc.

Bolt's picture

Sounds like a guy sticking up for his teammate. I still don't think regardless of whether they were expecting a foul or not the plan would be to passively dribble to the corner and throw up a floater from 23 feet with 4 and a half seconds to go. Even if they were expecting the foul the gameplan would be a no brainer to get the ball in Deshaun's hands.

RedQueenRace's picture

Could be.
There's too much focus on this play anyway.  The missed foul shots, the unforced TOs, the offensive boards given up, the poor play out of the bigs, jacking up 25 threes out of 47 shots, Craft badly missing at least 3 wide open shots from the foul line or closer, Smith being a total non-factor on the boards.  Plenty to choose from.

Bolt's picture

This is a very flawed team personnel wise on offense. You could definitely tell Thad had it in his players' heads that they were going to try to foul and Scott got trigger happy. Poor execution by a player that's pretty inexperienced in pressure situations. Thad may have out-thought himself a bit with the foul concept but one way or another, that's certainly not what he intended to have happen. The same with the execution of the offense otherwise. This team relies on the 3s/jumpshots because they really haven't shown the ability to aggressively get to the bucket and either score or kick out for a more open shot. 25 out of our 47 shots were 3s and there's a reason for that. Not just because we fall in love with the 3...but because teams aim to take away Deshaun and any driving lanes in lieu of giving up outside jumpers/3s that they have full confidence we will not make.

Killer nuts's picture

I think it was pretty obvious that Matta was expecting MSU to foul and he had prepared the guys on the floor accordingly. If the refs call a foul as shannon threw the ball up like that we'd be calling him a genius. I just haven't seen a good enough angle yet to determine if MSU was about to foul or what Scott sensed as a foul to make him do that

Killer nuts's picture

Looking at the gif a few more times you can see the on-ball defender put his hands on Scott as he approaches the three point line so Scott thought he was about to get wrapped up. I really don't think this was some horrible brain fart by Scott, just a call/play that didn't go our way

RedStorm45's picture

Thomas: 10 FGs, everyone else: 9.

avail31678's picture

They showed a stat/graphic...Scoring Leaders (at the time), Thomas 21, and then there were FIVE MSU guys with 9 points.  Pretty much the opposite of our team and pretty much proves we need more consistent scorers (as if we didn't know).

Kalamazoo Steve's picture

We hit our free throws and this is a win. Let's not make it more complicated than it is. Little things win. We were crappy at the little things tonight. BIG is a bitch.

Poison nuts's picture

Amen to that. I'm somewhat more of this team this year because the B1G is insanely good & wins on the road will continue to be tough to come by. This team may end with more losses than several years past, but if they get to the tourney on a roll, they'll be toughened up by then...I hope.

Ross had 5 points in 11 minutes, on 2/3 shooting. He needs to get more minutes and take more shots...get involved in the offense more, driving to the bucket, etc..
Williams with 1 point in 19 minutes is just not good enough. I really hope they work on his strength and hands this offseason.

Killer nuts's picture

Laquinton goes through strecthes where he is very passive and a total non factor. He needs to get into the flow of the game. I think it'd help to run a couple sets when he gets in just to get him iso oppurtunities on the wing or high post to get him going

Bolt's picture

Agreed. He kind of seems to "check out" at times. It's enigmatic because we really need him on the floor and to be successful for this team to go anywhere, but Thad can't always trust him...and for good reason.

Statutoryglory's picture

It would really help Q knowing he was going to get at least 10 min a half and not be yanked after a mistake and not play in the 2nd at all if it's close.  He could average an easy 10ppg in 20 min and be another scoring option.

petebuc52's picture

Good stuff statutoryglory. Q was actually working hard on defense and looked to be active/into the game in the 1st half...then stuck to the bench in the 2nd EXCEPT with seconds left and another scoring option is needed on the court..Laughable... And some people wondered why his AAU buddy R. Hood didn't buy in to the program...If your Q getting jerked around are you gonna advise your friend to come here?  Thad is a good coach but that doesnt mean he cant be questioned on questionable things...But what do I know it's just basketball smh...

Silverbuck8's picture

Hit the nail on the head, seems his playing time is way too sporadic and the second he makes a mistake on either end he is out.   He is one of the few guys besides Thomas who is a scorer and really is a guy who can create.

buckeye4life050233's picture

Plain and simple we have no inside scorer unless we post up thomas.  without an inside presence we live and die by jumpshots and beating people off the dribble to the bucket....not going to win tight games when you can't go inside.......really miss sully

Bolt's picture

No real inside threat on offense or defense. Amir may average 1.5 blocks per game but that's because no one fears taking him on and people will attack the basket with him down low without hesitation. Like I said he may average 1.5 blocks per game but he also gets scored on several times a game on plays where you're like "how did you not just block that?!" It's not like Ken Johnson or something where no one would even test him inside after a while.

thatlillefty's picture

Feel bad for Scott because he played a great game up to that last play, imo. We're a better offense with him and craft playing the 1-2 guard combo.
Not only did Thomas drop 28 pts., he led the team with 7 rebounds.

d5k's picture

I am guessing Matta even had a tendency from Izzo to foul in those spots as a scouting point. Oh well. The unlucky turnover by scott after his steal was more critical. I thought appling reached in on him on that one.
