Posey, Boom Likely Out for Nebraska

Salt, meet wound.

The return of Ohio State tailback Daniel Herron and receiver DeVier Posey from their start-of-the-season NCAA suspensions could be delayed by at least one more game barring a change of heart by the NCAA, sources told The Dispatch this morning.

...

A separate probe by the NCAA into Herron and Posey apparently showed they may have received improper benefits in terms of alleged inflated remuneration while working summer jobs in the Cleveland area. It could mean at least one more game of suspension for Herron, for whom the benefits was said to be in the $200 to $400 range, and perhaps multiple games for Posey, for whom the benefit was said to be about $500.

Sources said both refuted the charges. Herron, a source said, produced evidence that he thought showed he had received no improper benefit.

This week is going to be awesome!

Why would I think it was all over? Why?

At least we were going to lose to Nebraska anyway, right?

How about those basketball Buckeyes!

Also why can't the NCAA suspend Jim Bollman for crimes against football?

Poe McKnoe's picture

Need to scour the documents again.  Maybe the NCAA required Ohio State to retain Bollman for 2011.

TallTom's picture

Miami?  T-town Suit Gate @ Alabama?  Cam Newton's dad's church rebuild?  Doesn't the NCAA have anyone else's fish to fry?

we need to stop breaking the rules and then magically, the NCAA will disappear.

Does it matter really? It sucks for those guys because I'm sure they thought the worst was behind them, but as far as the team's overall offensive performance goes, things weren't going to get much better simply because they were on the field.

Good stuff, Luke. Fortunately, I'm way beyond Dr. Pepper at this point.

Just don't play them for the season, its that simple, let the guys who deserve to play, continue to play. Build for the future, let Hyde and Hall get the carries. Keep Smith, Brown, Spencer and Reed out there instead.

buckeyes33's picture

Couldn't agree more. The worrisome thing is that Fickell is now so desperate he will immediately play anyone who might have an edge regardless of status.

If he has half a brain cell he knows he'll be jobless after week 12 anyways.  His selfishness or selflessness / committment to the forward progress of the program will come to light throughout the rest of the season.

Would it really matter either way? Who can actually throw the ball to Posey? How many times will a Boom run for 3 yards not happen anyway because Shugarts false-started again? Whatever. Give us the death penalty for the rest of this season. We'll start anew in 2012!

BTW, anyone see Spencer Hall's take on Saturday's game? I laughed and cried b/c that's all I can do at this point.

Because we couldn't go for three.

+1, QB, limited playbook still exist.  If anything else, won't Braxton/Bauserman just stare down Posey anyway, making him relatively ineffective?

I want a fall Saturday in Ohio Stadium..

Tim's picture

If Posey can at least draw more attention from opposing defenses, it should make things easier for Smith, Reed, etc.  I was really holding out hope that since Posey is so much more polished than any of our other receivers, he would have a noticeable impact on the passing game.

njc2o's picture

reed died trying to recover the onside kick, remember?

carence's picture

This is the funniest comment I've seen on here! LMAO

Tim's picture

Yeah, I remember Reed being down, but did we ever hear how bad it was?  There's still Smith, at least, and maybe once Posey's back, he'll be covered by someone whose hands aren't strong enough to take the ball away after a catch.

Oh well, we've always been a basketball school anyway.

1. I don't see how we don't get a bowl ban at this point.

2. When will the fan base start screaming for Smith's head as loudly as we scream for Bollman's head?

Brutus's picture

Better hope we can get to 6-6 this year so we can at least start serving part of that bowl ban. A bowl ban this year would spare the team, the fan base, and whichever unfortunate bowl invites us the agony of having to watch this offense for a 13th game.

For as down as I am on this team right now, I still keep thinking that they'll somehow do something to salvage the season. I realize this is completely delusional, nevertheless, I remain hopeful.

KenK's picture

Looking at our schedule, I'm not sure how we get bowl-eligible at this point.

Johnny Hooker: "He's not as tough as he thinks". Henry Gondorff: "Neither are we".

Brutus's picture

Purdue and Indiana are just as crappy as we are. PSU is only slightly better and we have them at home. If things work out, PSU will be the game that makes us bowl eligible so maybe there will be that added incentive.

GoBlu's picture

If i were OSU, i would pass on a bowl game this year.

You will probably be a 6-6 team and go the the Motor City bowl vs a MAC team.   It would do you better to sit it out and show the NCAA that you are serious about change.

741's picture

Dammit. I agree with this guy.

Alex's picture

Home vs Indiana

at Purdue

Home vs Penn State

Those are my 3 guarantee wins there...at Illinois and at Michigan could be the difference of 6-6 and 8-4.....stay positive, I know it's hard

BucksfanXC's picture

Oh god, if we go into Ann Arbor looking for a bowl eligibilty win and lose. Oh the horror. I'm gonna be sick. The trash talking I would have to endure up here in TStateUN. Pray for me fellow Bucknuts.

GoBlu's picture

uh, you're going to lose to the Wolverines anyways.   I think you guys have bigger concerns ahead of you on rebuilding your program instead of beating us with a decapitated team, no head coach and a joke for QB's.  We went through this crap with RichRod.... its not fun.

millertime2011's picture

don't worry, no matter how bad we are, we will still beat michigan. it's what we do. i seems to remember you guys starting the past few seasons undefeated like this year, and you were exposed as the season went on. This will happen again.

jenks's picture

The only thing worse than our offense would be TSUN's defense so no worries there.

Irricoir's picture

The defense that shut out Minnesota? Yeah their defense isn't LSU Alabama or even Ours, but anyone that can shut out an FBS team isn't as poor as we Buckeye fans like to make it out to be.

I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.

jenks's picture

It was a toungue in cheek comment. But seriously, UM's defense has been far from decent recently, and Minnesota is far from a decent team. They may be an FBS team, but they lost by two scores to an FCS team.

Watching the 1st episode of Ken Burns' documentary about Prohibition. Seems like Ohioans were quite significant in anti-alchohol movement. Karma is a bitch..

Johnny Hooker: "He's not as tough as he thinks". Henry Gondorff: "Neither are we".

Jason Priestas's picture

Ohioans were dominant in politics at the time. Much, much more than the state is today (though the last few elections have shown that it's still crucial to carry).

Strange bedfellows of all sorts backed prohibition and really, a lot of different factions were in favor of it, so it's natural that the dominant political state in the union would have a loud voice.

rampageripster's picture

this is ridiculous... since when does the NCAA set wages?  It's the dude's fucking business and he can decide how to pay his employees however much he damn well pleases... if Posey and Boom did the work and they got paid the same amount as other people who were doing the EXACT same work, then what the heck is the problem???

All that being said, Smith is done... clean house... start over... this should have never gotten to the NCAA, it should have been dealt with when it happened, and the school should have made sure the payments were kosher... adios Tracksuit Gene

This is like a recurring nightmare and just like Don Corleione says in Godfather III..."Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in"

God, I am tired of this sense of relief and days before these guys are to come back we get some new shit? What? No one knew this was going to happen and it's all of a sudden "oh BTW"?

I might as well live in prison. Free room and board. No electricity bill. My wife already cooks like sh!t so food isn't a problem and I feel liked I have been ------ in the @$$ so many times this season already, that no other man could possibly want to have a piece. This extra handout occured in the summer? How many months after their previous infraction came to light and they were suspended? There is zero accountability from these players. None. If the players felt like they owned this team I doubt that they would be playing as poorly as they are. Maybe it is just an offense thing? The defense is playing well and they aren't the ones getting in trouble sans the guy that has done nothing except one late game interception in his carreer. No accountability at all. Who steps up and takes ownership of this team? No one because we have captains swapping weekly. This isn't even a slant on Fickell. Someone, regardless of title, step up and lead.

Kick Boom and Posey out for repeat offender. They should be walking a straighter line than anybody else and setting the example right now. That leadership we were looking for on this team? Not from these two thanks.

I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.

GoBlu's picture

lol this is getting to be absurd now...

OSU needs to just clean house and start over with freshmen and sophmores, take your scholarship losses and post season ban(as if you will make it to a bowl game anyways) and just court Urban Meyer for the next two years.

btalbert25's picture

Ummm, they pretty much are starting over with Freshman and sophomores now.  Except of course for the great leaders like Brewster and Simon who have always put in their dues and worked hard. This roster is full of freshman and sophomores who are getting their butts handed to them every week.

Tommy's picture

Maybe we should just hire the coach from Appalachian St, eh?

Doc's picture

If not Meyer then who?  Dantonio, please!  He is Tressel light.  How about Pelini.  He seems to have his shit together in Lincoln.  The Buckeye Sports Bulletin has a great article about him this week, with quotes from Cooper.  He has his baggage, but he has proven himself away from tOSU.  He would also bring some intensity back to the program, that seems to be missing.

"Say my name."

madhatterhater's picture

The frustrating thing is these "kids" knew that they were being investigated and still are doing stupid stuff.  I know that some of this goes back to 2010, but they still did it in the spring.  I say that they should be kicked off the team and OSU just moves on.

I truly can't believe that if OSU was this dirty, how in the world were we not able to recruit better.  Not saying we were terrible, but I think everyone knows it could have been better.

go bucks

millertime2011's picture

I don't disagree that these kids are being stupid, but at the same time, it seems like the NCAA has a vendetta against ohio state. They are digging deeper into us than any other school $200 extra for an entire summer? If they worked 3 months (roughly a summer), 5 days a week, that's an extra $3 a day. $3!!!!!! What happened to everything with Alabama and the suit store? No doubt in my mind, if all of this came to light at the beginning of last decade, when OSU was winning national championships, we'd get the same treatment as Alabama/Oregon is getting. But now that they're the golden gooses, the NCAA can treat them lighter.

Jason Priestas's picture

We've heard from too many people that Posey's playing days are likely over at Ohio State. Would love to be wrong on this one, but just too much smoke.

Brutus's picture

Moral of the story: Never forego the NFL draft so you can come back and serve your punishment. Actually, the moral of the story is stop doing stupid shit when you've already been caught doing stupid shit. But the first moral is true too.

Ethan's picture

How does Posey get this situation and not Boom as well? Can you elaborate?

Doc's picture

Oh yeah, if this is true Herron and Posey should be booted.  Gene Smith it is time for you to go too.

Heard on the radio that Taylor Graham was the person to tell Miller he was being taken out for Bauserman after that interception...wtf. I mean seriously this is a joke when there are no offensive guys down on the field besides a guy who is in his first year on the program. What does Nic Siciliano even do now?

William's picture

Just go to the SEC and you don't have to worry about any of this stuff!  Free suits, free lawyers after stomping the shit out kids at the bars, free cars, free grades, but "it's the best conference in the land."  What a joke...I used to be all in on CFB, but it's being destroyed right in front of us and there is just nothing to stem the tide (pun intended) of this shit reporting.

btalbert25's picture

We all have to remember, the NCAA let Ohio State off the hook before the bowl game, much like they did with Auburn.  The real trouble never started until after the information about Tressel's lies and cover up came about.  Had that info never come to light, or had Tressel just been upfront from the get go, this whole horrible episode was easily avoided with a little bit of discomfort, but not the pain this has been.

Auburn is still being investigated, Tennessee is going to get dong punched.  Had Ohio State's players and coaches toed the line and done the right thing, this mess would've been avoided.  Let's quit blaming the NCAA, ESPN, or SEC this is an Ohio State problem.
