Posey, Boom Likely Out for Nebraska

Salt, meet wound.

The return of Ohio State tailback Daniel Herron and receiver DeVier Posey from their start-of-the-season NCAA suspensions could be delayed by at least one more game barring a change of heart by the NCAA, sources told The Dispatch this morning.

...

A separate probe by the NCAA into Herron and Posey apparently showed they may have received improper benefits in terms of alleged inflated remuneration while working summer jobs in the Cleveland area. It could mean at least one more game of suspension for Herron, for whom the benefits was said to be in the $200 to $400 range, and perhaps multiple games for Posey, for whom the benefit was said to be about $500.

Sources said both refuted the charges. Herron, a source said, produced evidence that he thought showed he had received no improper benefit.

This week is going to be awesome!

At least we were going to lose to Nebraska anyway, right?

Also why can't the NCAA suspend Jim Bollman for crimes against football?

Need to scour the documents again.  Maybe the NCAA required Ohio State to retain Bollman for 2011.

Does it matter really? It sucks for those guys because I'm sure they thought the worst was behind them, but as far as the team's overall offensive performance goes, things weren't going to get much better simply because they were on the field.

Just don't play them for the season, its that simple, let the guys who deserve to play, continue to play. Build for the future, let Hyde and Hall get the carries. Keep Smith, Brown, Spencer and Reed out there instead.

Would it really matter either way? Who can actually throw the ball to Posey? How many times will a Boom run for 3 yards not happen anyway because Shugarts false-started again? Whatever. Give us the death penalty for the rest of this season. We'll start anew in 2012!

BTW, anyone see Spencer Hall's take on Saturday's game? I laughed and cried b/c that's all I can do at this point.

If Posey can at least draw more attention from opposing defenses, it should make things easier for Smith, Reed, etc.  I was really holding out hope that since Posey is so much more polished than any of our other receivers, he would have a noticeable impact on the passing game.

1. I don't see how we don't get a bowl ban at this point.

2. When will the fan base start screaming for Smith's head as loudly as we scream for Bollman's head?

Set your avi
Brutus on 3 Oct 2011 - 1:03pm #

Better hope we can get to 6-6 this year so we can at least start serving part of that bowl ban. A bowl ban this year would spare the team, the fan base, and whichever unfortunate bowl invites us the agony of having to watch this offense for a 13th game.

For as down as I am on this team right now, I still keep thinking that they'll somehow do something to salvage the season. I realize this is completely delusional, nevertheless, I remain hopeful.

Purdue and Indiana are just as crappy as we are. PSU is only slightly better and we have them at home. If things work out, PSU will be the game that makes us bowl eligible so maybe there will be that added incentive.

You will probably be a 6-6 team and go the the Motor City bowl vs a MAC team.   It would do you better to sit it out and show the NCAA that you are serious about change.

Ohioans were dominant in politics at the time. Much, much more than the state is today (though the last few elections have shown that it's still crucial to carry).

Strange bedfellows of all sorts backed prohibition and really, a lot of different factions were in favor of it, so it's natural that the dominant political state in the union would have a loud voice.

All that being said, Smith is done... clean house... start over... this should have never gotten to the NCAA, it should have been dealt with when it happened, and the school should have made sure the payments were kosher... adios Tracksuit Gene

I might as well live in prison. Free room and board. No electricity bill. My wife already cooks like sh!t so food isn't a problem and I feel liked I have been ------ in the @$$ so many times this season already, that no other man could possibly want to have a piece. This extra handout occured in the summer? How many months after their previous infraction came to light and they were suspended? There is zero accountability from these players. None. If the players felt like they owned this team I doubt that they would be playing as poorly as they are. Maybe it is just an offense thing? The defense is playing well and they aren't the ones getting in trouble sans the guy that has done nothing except one late game interception in his carreer. No accountability at all. Who steps up and takes ownership of this team? No one because we have captains swapping weekly. This isn't even a slant on Fickell. Someone, regardless of title, step up and lead.

Kick Boom and Posey out for repeat offender. They should be walking a straighter line than anybody else and setting the example right now. That leadership we were looking for on this team? Not from these two thanks.

The frustrating thing is these "kids" knew that they were being investigated and still are doing stupid stuff.  I know that some of this goes back to 2010, but they still did it in the spring.  I say that they should be kicked off the team and OSU just moves on.

I truly can't believe that if OSU was this dirty, how in the world were we not able to recruit better.  Not saying we were terrible, but I think everyone knows it could have been better.

Set your avi
millertime2011 on 3 Oct 2011 - 2:46pm #

I don't disagree that these kids are being stupid, but at the same time, it seems like the NCAA has a vendetta against ohio state. They are digging deeper into us than any other school $200 extra for an entire summer? If they worked 3 months (roughly a summer), 5 days a week, that's an extra $3 a day. $3!!!!!! What happened to everything with Alabama and the suit store? No doubt in my mind, if all of this came to light at the beginning of last decade, when OSU was winning national championships, we'd get the same treatment as Alabama/Oregon is getting. But now that they're the golden gooses, the NCAA can treat them lighter.

We all have to remember, the NCAA let Ohio State off the hook before the bowl game, much like they did with Auburn.  The real trouble never started until after the information about Tressel's lies and cover up came about.  Had that info never come to light, or had Tressel just been upfront from the get go, this whole horrible episode was easily avoided with a little bit of discomfort, but not the pain this has been.

Auburn is still being investigated, Tennessee is going to get dong punched.  Had Ohio State's players and coaches toed the line and done the right thing, this mess would've been avoided.  Let's quit blaming the NCAA, ESPN, or SEC this is an Ohio State problem.
