None of us need anything to be pumped for this year & every freaking game. Still, artistic work from RobbyDKitchel is always good.

I'm disappointed by the play in the trenches. Both lines are being dominated by Toledo.  Luckily, Toledo shot themselves in the foot with bad passes to have to punt.

Now, can our O-line do something so the offense can move and score with the good field position?

It says that you guys overreact to everything.  Toledo has has 2 big plays and they scored directly from both of them.  They had negative yards in the 2nd quarter and OSU started moving the ball.

I'd like to see Miller early on in the half but Bauserman hasn't made any big mistakes; he's playing smart football a la Krenzel

painterlad's picture
painterlad on 10 Sep 2011 - 1:53pm #

Now that I have calmed down and can think rationally, Ohio State is starting to pull away from Toledo. I'm not sure why Bauserman is getting thrown under the bus by Buckeye fans when it is the offensive line (again) which is stinking up the joint. Our running backs are getting hit behind the line almost every time they carry the ball. Not going to bother to watch May, but I'm sure he had a wet spot near his zipper at the end of the first quarter.

The Buck Guy's picture
The Buck Guy on 10 Sep 2011 - 1:57pm #

Here's the problem with the O.  Neither guard is fast enough to pull, and Shugarts just sucks. He missed every block on the sweeps to the right.  This line IS excellent with the straight ahead run game though... but Bollman seems like he is allergic to that.

Do you think Bollman is outsmarting himself?  I think he is trying to show Miami an outside run game, thinking this team could be at least good enough to succeed against Toledo (epic fail). No doubt we will run straight ahead next week; but now Miami knows they have no worries about containing on the edges.

Bauserman has not been the problem.  Four dropped passes (two by Stoney amazingly), and he still is 10-19.  The problem has been the play calling (running outside instead of inside, passing on 4th and 2 not play-action, but just passing, etc.), and the O-line getting beaten by Toledo's D-line.  That is not Bauserman's fault.

I dunno if Rod Smith has it.  He was used to trucking kids half his size in crappy Indiana high school football, and now he's put the ball on the ground in consecutive games on account of unremarkable hits.  Hopefully it's something he outgrows, but he won't see many meaningful touches once Jordan Hall returns.

Players of the game for Ohio State(IMHO):

John Simon, John Hankins, Andrew Sweat, Dominck Clarke, Carlos Hyde. Oh: and Devin Smith.

Players of the game for Toledo:

Page, Dantin, Thomas

That super-conservative play calling is going to cost Ohio State a few games. I predicted Carlos Hyde would be good when nobody was giving him any love, but he can't carry this team. Way too predictable play calling.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'm pissed too that Braxton didn't at least get a chance to play a series or two in this game. Fickell has committed himself now. No turning back. We'll live and die with The Baus. It's his team. Roderick needs to be benched for the next to games with NO TOUCHES. He is going to cost us a game with his dropsies.

And BTW, for all of you folks still disrespecting the Rockets: This is a Toledo team likely to win the MAC, and is big and fast. IMO they are a better team than Notre Dame. But that isn't saying much, I guess.

Will, I desperately wish that would be the case. But unfortunately I'm pretty confident its going to take a loss against Michigan State with Bauserman starting for Fickell to get his f***ing head out of his ass before we get the best 11 out there on offense.

So glad you've been watching all of the practices to know exactly how well Miller reads defenses, knows the playbook, and hits receivers who aren't being covered by second string Akron defensive backs. Not to mention that in his two biggest plays, he was *completely* bailed out by his wide receiver - one would have been an incompletion, the other a pick in the red zone.

But hey, he has lots of stars and a big arm, he must be better now!

Honestly, I agree, Bauserman sucks. But I don't think we're in a good position to judge whether he's the best option on the team or not. Especially while we're on our third string running back and second string, freshman, wide receivers. And finally, even TP admitted that starting his freshman year retarded his development as a quarterback. He was too busy with the gameplan for the week to do little things like fixing his throwing motion.

I won't complain if Braxton gets on the field, and I agree that he probably should have seen a serious sometime in the third quarter... but I'm not ready to throw the coaching staff under the bus on this decision yet.

William's picture
William on 10 Sep 2011 - 5:04pm #

It doesn't matter if Miller is extremely adept at reading coverages and schemes at this point in time, because Bauserman is no better at it. At least with Miller when a play breaks down, or he has no options available he has the ability to take off and make something out of nothing. Bauserman is a homeless man's Todd Boeckman.

William's picture
William on 10 Sep 2011 - 3:49pm #

We didn't deserve to win this game. Bauserman shouldn't be the starter, he played horridly, as did the O-line, D-line, and secondary. Where was this team's fire, what happened to their "Us against the world mentality?" Miller needed to get playing time today, to prepare him for Miami, because there is no way in Hell that we will win there with Bauserman at quarterback. Also Basil sucks and there is no arguing that he doesn't. He hasn't made a field goal. There was a lot to take away from this game and most of it was that we were completely unprepared and that our offensive schemes were absolutely terrible.

buckeyedude's picture
buckeyedude on 10 Sep 2011 - 4:01pm #

Agreed about the horrid D(except Simon, Hankins, Sweat and Clarke.) I saw a #19(it wasn't Ohrian Johnson, but couldn't read his name) miss a tackle, and just friggin stand there and watch Eric Page run towards the end zone!  Way too many missed tackles. Fickell better tighten up that D. Tackling. It's  fundamental.

Agreed Simon played well, as did Sweat, didn't see to much of Clarke but Hankins is fat and out of shape. We couldn't defend simple screen passes all day. This game was just disgusting. This team deserves to be dropped from the Top 25.

Kalamazoo Steve's picture
Kalamazoo Steve on 10 Sep 2011 - 4:10pm #

This game was not close because of bad QB play. Joe has done nothing to warrant taking him out. God you people are tough to please. Why no crying about the 4th downs the bullets let get converted? Toledo is a good team. They made all kinds of miststakes and were still in the game. They have talent. Possible they are the best non conference team we play. Agree with Smith not being ready, but he wouldn't be needed if Boom and Hall didn't break rules. Tough to blame the kid. List of RB's who had butter fingers early: Archie, Eddie, and Beanie. Relax a little.

William's picture
William on 10 Sep 2011 - 4:15pm #

I think missing a wide open wide receiver is pretty bad Qb play. Though not all of this is Bauserman's fault. The O-line was manhandled, the D-line very rarely pressured, the team couldn't shut down any screens. The offensive gameplan was terrible, our safeties were burned through the air and were timid in their tackling. Say that I'm overreacting, but the one thing you can't argue with me about is how much Basil sucks, he can't make a field goal.

Kalamazoo Steve's picture
Kalamazoo Steve on 10 Sep 2011 - 5:05pm #

I didn't see the O-line get manhandled. Did Toledo record a sack today? I saw a QB with all kinds of time to throw. He did hold on to a couple too long, but if that's the biggest gripe from his second career start, I think he did just fine. 2-0.

Set your avi
Nitz25 on 10 Sep 2011 - 4:21pm #

He didn't make any mistakes with the football but he did miss many, many opportunities in a close game where those opportunities should have been taken advantage of.  I watched him overthrow wide open recievers at least 3 times, and hold the ball egregiously long on many occasions.  Throwing the ball away is better than forcing a throw, but when you throw as many balls away as Bauserman did today, it indicates that he isn't releasing the ball with the proper timing for the routes that're being run.

I'm betting that instead of reading the D pre-play and being able to know where the open reciever is GOING to be, Bauserman is trying to read the D as the play develops.  It's causing him to miss a lot of narrow windows to hit open recievers as they pass between zones, which is why he ends up holding the ball for 5 seconds so much.  Braxton probably can't read the D any better, but he can make plays with his legs rather than stand their for 5 seconds and throw it away (or get sacked when we play a better D-line).

Set your avi
yrro on 10 Sep 2011 - 4:56pm #

On the positive side, the O-line gave him all day to throw today. Just makes it more frustrating he couldn't find anyone.

One thing about Baus.... he's never going to force a throw he isn't sure is there... which is good for turnovers, but sometimes awful for making first downs.
