It's BIELEMA TIME

If you enjoy good football and better storylines, today is the perfect day for kicking your feet up, consuming the beverage of your choice in responsible quantities and taking in an entire day of football. Thanks to Jim Delany's mad negotiating skills, five of the six bowl games today will feature Big Ten teams in action. The conference is off to a somewhat surprising 2-0 start, while Delany's nemesis, the SEC, is off to an 0-3 start and the two conferences will go head-to-head in three games today. The Legends and Leaders won't have it easy as their underdogs in all five games they play today, but if they can steal a few of them, it will go a long way towards bolstering the league's image.

Today also marks Urban Meyer's final game as the head coach of the Florida Gators and it very well could feature the final episode of the Rich Rodriguez era in Michigan, so if you're into gawking at accidents, tune into the Gator Bowl at 1:30.

This is your open thread. Do with it as you will.

How will TCU handle their Wiscy?  I'm sticking to some beer, some Captain and will resort to some wine if I run out.  I'm all keyed up and ready to watch some B1G TEN football.

RoweTrain's picture

Just wondering, is your user name "Ohio in me" or "Ohio in Maine (ME abbrevation)"?

OHIOinME's picture

Good question, it's both.  I'll always be an Ohio boy and I currently live in Maine.

RoweTrain's picture

That's what I figured but the real reason I was wondering is because I also live in Maine, born and raised.  I've also always been a lifelong Buckeye fan, not by chance but basically a brainwashing from my Aunt.   Don't see too many Buckeye fans up here so thats why I thought I would ask.  Good to hear.

Pam's picture

If College Game Day is any indication, looks like I will be watching the Sugar Bowl muted.  "teaching momnets, missed opportunity, sending a message to future players, WWWD, put a stamp on his program and everything Tressel stands for blah, blah, blah.

TLB's picture

This is nothing new.  I don't watch eSECpn much, but when I do for gameday or halftime of a live game, they seem to bash the Buckeyes whenever the opportunity arises.  Seems to be more negativity towards tOSU than any other program.  Wish I knew why.

Seth4Bucks's picture

In no particular order:

1. tOSU is the flagship program in the Big10 which created the Big10 Network. ESPN hates that the BTN is doing as well as it is and that it's providing them with competition.

2. ESPN went all in a lather about Ohio State during the 2006 season only for Ohio State drop a major turd. ESPN has been embarrassed in the past. But Ohio State's a little different because the success that they've sustained since.

3. ESPN has a deal with SEC and it is ESPN's interest to belittle the SEC's competition and cater to the SEC. The Big10 has been the biggest competition and again OSU's been the flagship program for the Big10.

4. Ohio State has been wildly successful and haters are going to hate. The success has put a big target on the backs of the Bucks. Anyone who can sling mud will do so, especially if it's coming from someone whose own program is down the mud.

TLB's picture

All valid point.   But why do they like Michigan so much?

OHIOinME's picture

Because ESPN believes explosive offense and players brings ratings.  Good defensives wins games but explosive players are fun to watch.  High scores and hard hits, it's commercialism.

"Hey, did you see so and so play?" <--attractive.

"Hey did you see the so and so defense keep the score and stats low?" <--not so good.

College football, meet NFL

Bobcat04's picture

Agreed, that's why they slobber all over themselves for Oregon.  Was nice to kill their stats last year.

Pam's picture

I don't know if this is true although I have heard it more than once: tOSU was so pissed off at ESPN for printing Mo's factually challanged story (with no retraction or apology when the NCAA cleared them)  they weren't going to allow them to have CGD in the 'Shoe again.

TLB's picture

who will be announcing the Sugar Bowl?  If it is John Saunders, it is a definite mute.

Getting ready to head to New Orleans on Monday. But damn, looking at those early morning shots of the Rose Bowl on ESPN makes me wish we were headed back to Pasadena. I'm a little put off at playing games in the South in domes. And maybe this is a statistical anomaly, but OSU's BCS record in domes is obviously less than stellar.

Caught a bit of ESPN's outrageous "Year of the QB" thing last night and never realized how much of an Ovechkin ringer Stanzi was. They could be twins, but of course never would be because one of them loves Lenin and the other is a McCarthy descendent.

Bama cleary has too much for Sparty.  And Northwestern has no QB, result....0-2

Seth4Bucks's picture

It's early still, let's see how MSU responds to that TD before writing them off. That PI penalty was key in keeping Alabama's scoring drive alive.

I don't have ESPNU though, so can't watch the nerds :-/

Matt's picture

The Bama LBs look like they are a foot taller and two steps faster than every non-offensive lineman player for MSU.  If MSU's offensive line doesn't wake up, thiis going to be a bloodbath.

I will say this about MSU though, they're making my remote work a little less now that I only am switching between two games.

poguemahone's picture

If Wisconsin goes down to TCU tonight, this might be the worst day in the history of the conference.

Buckeye in Athens's picture

Hey at least no one lost to a conference USA opponent today.

poguemahone's picture

I guess we can take potshots at the SEC East (pending the result of this Outback bowl), but the SEC West is absolutely ruining Big Ten teams right now. I'm all of a sudden a whole lot less optimistic about the game Tuesday.

Buckeye in Athens's picture

Ha, there's no doubt about that. I have to admit its making me a bit more nervous too. However, did we really expect Michigan to win? I though mich st would be better than they're playing, but that's the biggest surprise for me really.

poguemahone's picture

I certainly expected Michigan to at least be competitive. Same for MSU, though to a lesser degree. But both of them getting housed? That has to hurt the entire conference's ego. Michigan State won 11 games and is doing this on national TV

Buckeye in Athens's picture

True. However, if OSU and Wisconsin can win then we'll be looking at 4-4. Not too bad, just bad relative to the SEC west. I sure hope our boys are concentrating on the game and getting prepared mentally right now.

tomcollins's picture

Meh, both those teams are not very good.  Iowa routed MSU almost that badly, and we took care of Michigan in a similar fashion.  Iowa looked decent in their game against a respectable opponent. Iowa and Wisconsin are the best gauges of where our talent level is. Iowa didn't disappoint.  Wisconsin winning would be huge.

I'll tell you this, I am all over Auburn in Glendale.  Pac-10 has not looked good at all.

Arkansas is gonna be a tough fight.  If Wisconsin lays an egg against TCU, I start to get scared.  Until them, I'm not too worried.

btalbert25's picture

I don't think the conference has an ego really.  I mean they weren't favored in any of those games.  We all knew Michigan sucked.  I was a bit surprised Michigan State didn't at least compete, but it looked like one of the few games Bama actually showed up and wanted to win this year.  I really don't think Wisconsin or Ohio State give a shit about what Michigan and MSU did today.  As for me, I'm glad Michigan got blasted yet again, I will never pull for them.  I did pull for Penn State, but mostly because Florida is the team I hate about the 2nd most in all of college football.

Irricoir's picture

Nice. Another year of listening to SEC shit with no ammunition to fire back. Thank you Big10. Hopefully we win, and I can take the "I am a team man, not a conference man" approach. Course, when those tides turn I am sure that I'll mention our conference too. I'll still be more a team man than a conference, regardless. Thank you Michigan State, for all your crying on boards about how you were deserving of the Rose Bowl and that you could beat Ohio State this year, you have given Bama fans something to talk shat about. "We beat your conference champions", even though every Buckeye knew what was going to happen to MSU. The same thing that happens every year in a bowl. MSU is one of the B1G greatest underachievers.

I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.

Matt's picture

I get the frustration, but so long as Wisky beats TCU in the Rose Bowl and we beat the SEC's representative to the Sugar Bowl, I'm okay with Ohio State's showing and the 2-0 record in BCS bowls.

Also:  GOOD LUCK TA ALL'YALL

tomcollins's picture

As long as Ohio State wins, I don't care what happened to the Little 10.  Although I enjoy seeing the SEC lose games, conference pride is silly.

btalbert25's picture

+1,000,000 and even more.  We sit on here and rip Penn State and Michigan all the time.  You're telling me you want them to win now?  To hell with all that.  That's SEC mentality at it's best on display in big 10 country.  I guess I don't need the other 10 teams in the conference to make me feel secure about my team, which is also a south of the Mason Dixon Line mentality.

Jason Priestas's picture

There's a big difference between hoping your conference mates do well in bowls (which every coach, player and administrator in the Big Ten wishes) and going around chanting some idiotic acronym.

I always want the Big Ten to represent, but I won't claim a Michigan victory as my own (unlike fans of lesser SEC schools).

JakeBuckeye's picture

This.

This is why I say Ohio State-Michigan trumps Auburn -Alabama as a rivalry, even this year.

Nice Balls Bilema.  Love the call.

Bucksfan's picture

At least it's an entertaining Rose Bowl so far.  Just going with my gut, I thought Wisconsin was going to roll to a 20 point halftime lead.  They're doing exactly what I thought they'd do, pounding it, but TCU is doing a good job coming up when it counts, and moving the ball themselves.  So kudos to them in being the real deal.

Exactly. 3 of the best rbs and a top 5 offensive line.

Kurt's picture

Wisconsin disappointed me, none of the interesting jet sweeps, wr screens and fake screens - misdirection - that they used to beat us. It seemed like Bielema handcuffed Chryst. Wisconsin lost for the same reason the other B10 teams (except NW) lost: poor coaching.

Buckeye Black's picture

Once again, Ohio State has to carry the weight of the Big Ten.

Bobcat04's picture

Wow.  The B10 really got done up today.  Might actually have to watch the Sugar Bowl with the sound off to enjoy it, as it's sure to be filled with derogatory comments.  Of course, depending on how the Bucks play, most of the comments might be from me.

JakeBuckeye's picture

If we get Ness and Blackledge (sp?) we should be fine. I like those guys.

poguemahone's picture

Yeah, those guys aren't so bad. Blackledge is a Penn State guy, born in Ohio, and Nessler's never one to antagonize. So that's one bright spot.

Irricoir's picture

Wow, I'm thinking that I should root for Arkansas if I want the Buckeyes to win. Every single team I pulled for lost today. Like others have said I am a fan of no other team except Ohio State but I was hoping the conference would show its strength. Instead Wisconsins loss made Gee's comments sting us a little considering we lost to Wisconsin. Though I know you can't gague teams that way.

I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.

I shamefully pat myself on the back for saying that TCU was number one in the country ever since their win against Utah. I really didn't want them to win that game though.

theDuke

German Buckeye's picture

Sure - Bama did it vs. Sparty. Freaking ran OVER them all day long.

Matt's picture

TCU won this Rose Bowl because of its passing game, and Wisconsin's pass defense philosophy was a head scratcher.  You've got that great pass rush with JJ Watt and Wisky's defensive backs are playing 10 yards off the line of scrimmage.  Dalton is extremely experienced and could pick that soft zone apart all day.  Better to jam the TCU WRs at the line of scrimmage, get them out of their route and off their rhythm, and force Dalton into tough decisions.

Wisky also got too cute on offense.  It was only the final drive that Clay reminded everyone what made Wisky great; running north to south between the tackles.  There were way too many awful toss plays to the short side of the field that took forever to develop.

Oh well.  The Big Ten could go 1-7 in Bowl games and I wouldn't care, so long as that 1 represents an Ohio State victory in the Sugar Bowl.

poguemahone's picture

Want. As long as Addazio isn't a package deal.

Olentangy's picture

urban is classless. yes, he's a hell of a football coach and he has great credentials. but telling recruits that God told him to recruit them and averaging like 19 arrests per national title is simply a joke. brilliant w/ x's and o's but i don't trust him running this program. there's too much @ stake...

How firm thy friendship

tomcollins's picture

I've warmed up slightly to the idea of having him.  He would be a good transition coach to have if there is no one great lined up to follow in Tressel's footsteps.  We could do a lot worse.  I wouldn't be opposed to having him coach a few seasons and get someone else groomed to take over.  But if someone better is available, go for it.

poguemahone's picture

A little late, but: bah humbug. You can point to Urban's arrests but Tress has had quite a few in his time at Ohio State too, and Urban also hasn't had anything like Tatgate happen on his watch (or even Smith's payment from a booster, for that matter). I'm not going to turn reality on its head and say Urban is a stern disciplinarian while Tress is hopelessly corrupt, I'd still be glad to have Meyer as our head coach after Tress is gone. He knows offense, his teams always play good defense, and he's got every connection you could want in the state of Florida.

Olentangy's picture

yeah i definitely hear what you're saying and all that's really hard to argue against. having those connections to fla would be quite a perk- that's a great point. there's just something about him that seems like he's not a real honest, stand-up guy like tress. but, then again, as you've guys have pointed out time and again that we have truly been spoiled w The Vest. we could do a lot worse than urban, that's for sure. i guess i'm hoping that hazell or fickell or spielman [haha jk- shoutout to tab] will be ready by then to take over the program.

How firm thy friendship

Coach B got too comfortable running up scores against inferior opponents at the end of the season. There were absolutely no adjustments on offense or defense for this game. Matt was right on with his comments about the pass defense. When OSU played soft against Penn State their Q had lots of success. As soon as they manned up and played tight on the receivers the whole game changed. And, why did they keep going away from their power run game and abandon any play action off of it? Even the two point play was a straight pass formation call. No need to protect against the power run because it wasn't there to begin with. Just the Q staring down his receiver so a lineman could jump up and knock down the pass. The attempt at an onside kick was a joke.

I would feel a lot better about Ohio State's chance vs. the RazorPigs if it weren't for the fact that the BigTen as a conference(same one that Ohio State plays in) went 0-5 today.

And then there is the issue of Terrelle and Herbstreit getting in a tit-for-tat over gold pants. Terrelle had better focus on the RazorPigs and not Herbstreit, or he's going to end up on his back, more than once tuesday.

Woody was rollling over in his blessed grave watching TCU(!!??) celebrate on the Rose Bowl turf

nickma71's picture

That was one of the more crummy games I have watched. Poor execution on one side, the other side playing way over their head as benificieries. TCU still will not be in my top 10. You don't have 132 yards and 76 yards from two running backs...and lose. It doesn't happen. Karma sucks for Bret.

TCU didn't look good at defense. I know ESPN can make it look like good defense to the idiot masses, but it wasn't. TCU made 4 or 5 good stops on defense. I don't consider Al Toon dropping a ball in his hands at the two a good defensive play. The knock down on the 2 point attempt was not good either. TCU was looking run all the way, and got lucky to be pushed back to the passing lane. Hey, blind squirels find nuts too...

nickma71's picture

I will vote honestly in your poll ex post facto. I haven't been on much lately. Wisconsin, 55-20. The nerds, probably not. Michigan? Lose. Sparty, maybe, but Alabama and their 3 loses are still number 5 in my ESPN poll. So I have to take Bama to win. Penn State picks aside. Florida can't score against the Tiffin Dragons. So 2-3.

i was at the msu game today. they made endless mistakes, couldn't run the ball, and their only score was on a trick play against the second defense. -48 yards rushing on the day spells bad news. if sparty played at wisconsin, the outcome would be the same, because sparty would still be in the citrus bowl. what the h&#( has dantonio been doing this past month?

The offseason begins when your season ends. Even then there are no days off.

Agree.  I watched the Mich St. game on Tv but ended up trying not to watch it.  Michigan St. couldn't block and had too turnovers and once that happens your offense can't stay on the field.  After that defense gets tired and play call gets desperate.  THE END.

Cheeseburger Charlie named Florida offensive coordinator.

I still feel Wisky was the better team, but TCU's ability to show multiple looks confused Wisky's o-line. Too much pressure, but I still say Tolzien gets drafted.

Teams from the state of Michigan enjoyed a 104 - 21 beatdown. Pathetic.

Beliema outcoached OSU this year, IMO, and he screwed the Rose Bowl up for Wisconsin before half. Should have had a TD instead of a FG. THAT was the difference in the game.

Man, where do I start?

Sparty, wtf? They really dissapointed.

scUM? what's the old saying? Plan for the worst, hope for the best?

PSU? Coulda woulda shoulda. Wasn't as lopsided as the final score.

Wisky? UGGGHHHH.

A couple of points I'd like to make:

Everyone, including other Big Ten teams hate us. Who has the most BCS wins? The only conference team to win the Rose Bowl in the last 10 years? Do you thinks PSU/ Wisky/ scUM fans are going to root for us Tuesday? Probably not.

I rooted (openly) for every B10 team to win today only because it makes the conference look stronger, however, in reality, I only care about US winning.  As other posts here stated, if the Big Ten goes 1-7, but the 1 win is ours, then f it.

Also, as I stated before, ESPN, Cowherd, Herbie, Mark May, etc. are sucking the fun out of college football. Add "the Decision" and I am getting burned out. It is to the point where I won't listen to Cowherd anymore and I used to be one of his biggest fans.

As most of ya'll know I am split between NY and Ohio for teams (Buckeyes and Giants baby!) but fuck I can't take anymore Big Ten, Cleveland, Ohio State and Greg Oden bashing. If the SEC and ESPN are kings of the mountain and it's getting shoved down our fucking throats 24/7, then why don't they play SEC exclusively and they can make up their own MNC, "King shit of turd mountain". We get it, best conference and all, now go blow yourselves. (ESPN and SEC that is).

Anyone else think Herbie got a kick out of the whole "Worst Jan 1 in B10 history" quote? He seemed all giddy and had a smirk.

FTW!

Forgot to add that other B10 teams are quick to call us out for losing big bowl games but other than here and there haven't done shit.

I don't think Herbie took any joy in the performance of the BigTen today. I think he is right. It was the worst performance that I've ever seen by the BigTen in my lifetime(46).The BigTen has become the Big East of the midwest. Maybe Delany should change the name to the Big Midwest conference and focus on b-ball like the Big East does. At this rate, in a few years the BCS may revoke the BigTen's automatic bid(s).

BuckeyeChief's picture

No doubt it was...part of why I am so irate; if PSU and Wisky win, I would've been cool; he just seemed to have a smirk while he talked. Embarrassment maybe?

It's more that the SEC - specifically the west - was that good this year.  What other conference is going to match up 4 teams with Alabama, Arkansas, Miss St and Florida and come out looking good?  If the Oregon team that I saw play against Oregon State shows up in the NCG Auburn will roll them easily.  They (Auburn) are much better defensively than many on this site and elsewhere think.

Penn State's game was winnable.  They basically handed Florida most of their points.   Florida's O is down quite a bit and while their D is not as dominating as in the past they still are pretty good and I was impressed that PSU moved the ball as well as they did.

Michigan State was simply not a good 11-1 team.  They beat Notre Dame with a gimmick play, should have lost to Purdue, struggled with both Northwestern and Penn State and got absolutely pounded by Iowa.  They pulled off the big win against the Badgers in East Lansing and that was it.

Michigan gets matched up with MSU, whose losses were to Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas and LSU. Meanwhile #7 Oklahoma gets matched up with a team Michigan beat by 20.

I did not think Wisky's defense was that good and tonght it showed.   Still the Badger's could have won the game despite the Charmin-soft coverage if they had stuck to pounding the ball up TCU's gut.

I give props to a Persa-less Northwestern for not quitting.

sucking the fun out of college football == oversigning

Seriously though, B10 had a respectable record against schools that signed the same number of athletes.... big WTF!  I don't want the B10 to catch up the the SECheaters in that department.

arkansas has signed 135 players in the last 5 years to OSU's 99.

i LOLed that in this time tressel has signed 10 WRs and 12 RBs.  ark's are 17WRs and 8 RB.

I'm pretty sure that Herbie's "worst day for big 10 history" comment proves that he would have sold his gold pants, if he had any...  no seriously, i had to just dump this girl because her parents are gators and her sister goes to TCU, so by default she cheers for everyone who plays against the big 10.  I had to chase her out of the house with a nice hickory bat. Then I made sure she won't return by booby trapping the entrance to the house.  Now, I too will stay in a dark closet until tuesday at 8pm.   C'mon BUCKEYES!  lets change the ledger a bit eh?

John Saunders makes me puke.  Last year before giving Tressel the RB Trophy he said something to the effect of "the last time the Buckeyes were in So. Cal. it didn't turn out so well."  Now, he is making light of the fact that OU lost 5 BCS bowls in a row, 3 of them NCG's, with "you gotta be in them to lose right?"  What the f^&k has tOSU or Jim Tressel done to cause such vitriol?  I have said this before but seeing that it is 1/1/11, my I really am done with ESPN.  I just heard them say the Big Ten is "Legends, Leaders and a lot of losers"  They are so clever.

Bucksfan's picture

Another frustrating pont worth mentioning is that all year everyone made such a big flipping deal about how Ohio State didn't play Michigan State, and ultimately didn't beat anyone that finished in the top-25.  Well, we know now that Michigan State is the biggest fraud in the land.

So, let's say we hypothetically played and beat Sparty, leaving them at 10-2.  They'd STILL have been relegated to the Capitol One Bowl against Alabama.  Wisconsin would STILL have gone to the Rose to face TCU.  And we'd still be scratching our heads as to how good any of the Big Ten teams really were.

As others have said, as long as the Buckeyes win on Tuesday none of this matters.  Chalk it up to a year of bad matchups.

Legends and Leaders are stupid names. And man, the Big Ten got embarrassed today. Didn't help that our bowl slate was again, set up for failure. Every game excluding the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl was a favor to the SEC and the Big XII. Hopefully we can represent our conference well Tuesday and end the bowl season w/3-5 record. Which is pathetic. But honestly, I really only care about tOSU winning. And thanks Brett, you fucking douchebag. Way to save your DickRod impression for the most important game of the year for the Big Ten. And embarrass us all. God I hate Wisconsin more now.

I agree with others here that every other team in this conference hates us and blames us for the poor national perception, which is ridiculous. Without us, the conference would not have a single MNC in the BCS era, no appearances in the championship, and probabaly no BCS wins at all - who else would have won a freaking game.  Witout us, the conference is basically the big east, something we saw play out yesterday.

Let's win on Tuesday and we'll all feel better.  We are the only team in the conference capable of playing with other elite teams and will be for a long, long time as Michigan, Penn St and Nebraska are all a long way off of their elite previous status.

We are not the SEC, won't be the SEC anytime soon, but somehow that makes us terrible rather than just one of the "other" conferences.  We are held to different standard as a single program and as a conference.  I have no idea why, but it is true.

The ACC and big east catch a lot of flack, but nothing like what we endure as a conference.

"Witout us, the conference is basically the big east, something we saw play out yesterday"

Which is why the big 10 is a farce.....you all better be glad you didnt play BAMA, or you would be crying in your beer...AGAIN

Every year, osu is ranked at the top at the beginning of the season, you then have only one big game a year... that you never win...and when you do, its played at home with hometown refs, and even then you guys find a loss somewhere else in the schedule. Dont understand it...your the only legitimate team in the conference. Finally somebody is holding big 10 feet to the fire and instituting a conf championship game...what are you all gonna do? Wont be played at home!

Every year i hear..."were going unbeaten",  "We'll be in the national championship game"

The only championship osu has had in awhile was giving to them...dont count conference championships, your the big east..remember.

Come-on tressel...kick another field goal!

You all

0-5 today...
The big 10 conf is a farce....
They are just awful...
If osu were in the sec they would be an average team ( 6-5 )
You guys are proud at being tied with 2 other teams for so-called conf champions?
Because the conf is so weak, OSU has a chance EVERY year to win a championship,
but they can never do it. They had only 1 big game this year, against wisconcin, and they blew it.
They always have only 1 big game, they are always going to go undefeated, oh yeah.... im still waiting!
So wisconcin goes to the rose bowl, and gets beat by some little prid their talking on the OSU blog about what an accomplishment it is to win ( Share ) another another
big 10 championship. They make me sick. Snap back to reality people.
You all better thank god it wasnt OSU playing BAMA today...
You would all be crying in your beer...AGAIN
