What you’re talking about is a female student who is playing the role of the normal Brutus. What we had in 1981 was not just a female playing the role, but a Brutus costume that was at best androgynous, but seemed downright feminine to me. Fortunately, they got rid of that costume the next year, and no pictures apparently have survived. We should all be thankful.

Brutus was a woman for at least one year earlier in the decade, likely in 2003 or 2004. I remember them doing a special on her, and what it takes to become Brutus.

Three cheers for gender equity. 1981 was the only year (to my knowledge) that we ever had a female Brutus. I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that if the name of the mascot is Brutus, it should be a guy. Shocking insensitivity, I know.

I actually did a flashback to 1968 earlier this year, but the game I wrote about is featured on a “Buckeye Classics” video that I have. In any case, that was the week of the Purdue game, and we all know how that turned out.
