USC Award Winners Named

And surprise, surprise, but no offensive player of the week was awarded.

Torrence won the defensive PoW with his stellar outing: 8 tackles, a sack, a TFL and a pass breakup. Looks like putting baseball on hold may really pay off for him.

Thoma bagged the special teams honor, the “Attack Force” award went to defensive lineman Cameron Heyward. The Jack Tatum Big Hit of the week was delivered by Dan Herron. There was no Jim Parker lineman of the week selected (which is a shame because I thought the offensive line brought it).

Finally, Mike Adams won scout team offensive player of the week. Which is nice, but probably not what Big Mike or the rest of us had planned for his sophomore season.

I don't think any awards should be given out after a loss. It sends the wrong message, and while I generally agree the d held up their end of the bargain, you win as a team, and you lose as a team.

nahh...

These kids are hard on themselves enough..

You have to move on, and get ready for toledo!

Nothing wrong with telling someone they played a good game. yeah you last as a team, but these specific players played balls out.

Nothing wrong at all.

Just put 60 or 70 points on TOLEDO PLEASE!!!!

Under your line of logic, awards shouldn't be given out for wins, either. As you said, you win as a team, and so therefore there should not be individual recognition for outstanding efforts after victiories. Fortunately, we do not live in the USSR, and these players earned these awards through outstanding individual effort, despite the loss. Congrats to them.

After letting this game digest for almost 48 hours I am beginning to feel good about this team, again. We were the better team on Saturday, even if the scoreboard says otherwise. That is a good sign for things to come. I think if we can match that intensity over the remaining games this year we can run the table and play in another BCS bowl. The only thing holding us back is the offensive play calling and game management. Tressel needs to swallow his pride and hire a true OC.

Quite an eye opener that article. Some of the thoughts are off base, but the bulk of it, quite sadly, rings all too true. For all his protestations of being such a Christian, he (Tressel) is letting his pride (one of those 7 deadly sins) get in the way of success for his team. Coach, admit your play calling needs help and go get it!!!

As I said last year, they cannot let TP become Reggie Ball II.
The O line played great.
The D played lights out.
IMHO Tressel called a decent game. I am not as riled up about that as I am TP.

With that being said, the future looks bright next year, as long as they keep progressing.

As long as TP is here, Tress is not going anywhere (obviously). I read a post the other day that said the goal is for TP to become a pocket passer with 3rd down scrambling ability and escapability. It's true, and these things take time. When you can rely on your God-given ability to punk 160 lb white DBs throughout HS, you're going to develop bad habits. The greatest display of individual athletic ability I've ever seen was Troy in 2006 against PSU (flushed out of the pocket, reversing field, and then firing a 40 or 50 yard bomb to Robo). Pryor's progression will ultimately determine Tressel's future with OSU.

Set your avi
iball on 14 September 2009 - 6:37pm #

Troy barely saw the field by his 15th game as a Buckeye. TP will be fine, but he will NOT be Troy Smith. Troy always had a natural throwing motion, TP's can improve, but he won't have that type of gun.

I think tomorrow should be the official cut off day for SC discussion. The season is not over and we are facing a cocky Toledo team on the road (sorta). If everyone is gonna sulk over SC all season, then this season WILL be a disaster.

Set your avi
Bobby on 14 September 2009 - 6:38pm #

Also, we can also take solace in the fact that the Silver Bullets are back. One thing I absolutely loved was when B-Rolle did his little skipping celebration after one of his tackles. You should feel like a badass when you put on the S&G, and this team knows it. Anyone who says you can't rely on your D when they can't come up with the biggest stop of the game/get off the field is a douchebag. This D played its effing heart out for 54 minutes.

Set your avi
Bobby on 14 September 2009 - 6:43pm #

True. I remember when Texas came in '05 that people were wondering if VY (as a senior) could beat us with his arm because of his sideways throwing motion. You're right; TP will get markedly better (and people will respect his arm). Will he ever have an NFL arm? Probably not. Do I care as long as he beats people? Not at all.

Set your avi
Bobby on 14 September 2009 - 6:53pm #

Also, it's quite clear that Tressel's job involves not only breaking down and rebuilding TP from a football standpoint, but also from a mental/emotional standpoint. We all know the environment Troy grew up in and the mentality he had when he first came to OSU. Supposedly Latwan Anderson of Glenville is prone to snap any second. Tressel's job with TP involves a lot more than just football.

You hear all this stuff from TP's high school coach saying how unstoppable he was at Jeannette, and how he could take over a game by himself. TP obviously learned some bad habits against inferior competition, he's trying to get away with things in the game (like throwing off his back foot) that he can't get away with at the college level. It's a maturation process, he came into Ohio State with a rocket arm, but as an unpolished, run first QB. Matt Barkley enrolled in the spring semester at USC just to learn the offense. The kid went from a high school (Mater Dei) that produced Matt Leinert and Colt Brennan. Barkley's development as a pocket passer (and passer in general) is leaps and bounds above the level that TP was his freshman year. I'll bet that Jeannette's playbook is no where near as complicated as Mater Dei's. Give TP to the end of the season, then make your judgements.

On a side note, I really don't care what he says in press conferences. He's 19 years old and he's getting molested by TV reporters. I'd jumble my words and not think clearly under that situation too.

Here's my problem will everything I've been reading, everyone keeps saying well next season we will be awesome. Well I'm sorry if this team goes 11-1, that's awesome. Guess what folks, every year is not like 2002, or last year where there are 2 or 3 clear cut teams. Remember 2007 where everyone kept losing and no one took their spot in the championship? If this team goes 11-1 and pounds everyone else they face, they can still sneak in. I know the media is going to be hard on them, but what if Penn State keeps up to the pace they are right now and they are undefeated when this game is played? I'm not predicting this, but I'm saying Oklahoma is pretty much out of the picture. Texas has given up a lot of points to less than stellar offenses. USC looks tough but has a couple of tough games left. Ole Miss is not for real, Bama looks tough but not unbeatable. They will NOT take Boise State or BYU. If you ask me, if this team wins out, they have a real chance at making it.

You're a jackass. The D played it's heart out for the full sixty.

Everyone acts like it should have been just as easy to stop the best O-line in the country after fifty-four minutes as it was in the first six minutes. In a game against that kind of O-line it's a matter of keeping your D off the field. D gets tired quicker than O. The OSU offense failed to put the game away. The D almost killed that winning drive early, but as it wore on the ending was almost inevitable.

Jackass? I'm not taking anything away from the D. You're right; they put SC in a 2nd and 19 situation when Anderson once again reared his ugly head. All I'm saying is if the offense tacks on an extra minute or two to all of their drives, the D isn't in a situation where they have to stay on the field for the final six minutes of the game.

Yeah, unfortunately the contextual stuff that powers the ads isn't perfect.

As for selling out, I really wish some of you could see how little money we do make on this endeavor. Let's put it this way - we all still have full-time jobs and it doesn't appear as if any of us will be able to quit to do this as our day jobs any time soon. I'd also like to point out that we return a lot of potential revenue in the form of contest prizes.

Just because your son doesn't sell ads over at OHD doesn't mean we're selling out, sir.

I have read somewhere that Jim Bollman is no longer in the booth and someone else replaced his spot up there and that Jim Heacock is now in the booth and Luke Fickel is on the sideline.

First, I like Luke Fickel, I think he is the reason behind an outstanding defense Saturday night.

Second. Whether Jim Bollman is in the booth or not, I wish Jim Tressel would simply hand over ALL play calling to him for once and see for OURSELVES if Bollman can call plays. I would rather Bollman be in the booth and Nick Siciliano be on the side line next to Tressel communicating play calling. There has to be some better freaking play calling and it HAS to come from somewhere other than Tressel himself.

To me, I see Tressel as a very stubborn man and I have always wondered what is said on head set. Does Tressel block out any advice from the staff? Does he even take input outside of games? Who comes up with the formations and plays?

I would LOVE if Tress did what I mentioned above, and even though some of us call for Bollman to go, I think at least giving the man a shot at it would be worth it, if not then Nick Siciliano.

And so you know, Google decides what ads are shown based on the text from the page. You talk about USC, they think the site is about USC and that you might want to buy the crap.

Wanna make a difference, click the ad. These guys get money only when you click it. Money goes to the guys running this site, and money goes from the people selling USC shit. Sounds like a win / win to me.

You have both my respect and sympathy. Imagine, after a full day here in LA of "school pride" and colors everywhere, my place of safe haven is also invaded. Though, I thought I was just ribbing, I guess we all have our soft spots. Sorry about that.

As far as advertising dollars, get all you can. Freeloaders like me actually do appreciate the volume of effort it takes to run a respectable site like yours. But freeloaders (like me) don't feed the bulldog either.

I utilize several site's "good shizzy" columns to do my Buckeye legwork for me. I can read a lot of the stuff, but don't have time (and you do?) to do the research myself.

Back in the day, we had none of this, and staying in touch with the Buckeyes was nearly impossible.

Does anyone else think Terelle Pryor is turning out to be more like Jamarcus Russell than Vince Young. Huge arm, mobile, and inaccuarte at best. Young was a gamer who could take over and had intangibles in big games that I haven't seen out of pryor yet. I think Russell was great in college, but he had a sick nasty team around him especially on defense that made his job a ton easier to look good in just as a passer even by his junior year he never really blew me away except when torching Notre Dame but even the buckeyes could do that back in the day...just a thought

Set your avi
Brian on 15 September 2009 - 9:58am #

Young didn't become a stud til mid way through his junior year. I'm sorry but 2 games into someone's sophomore campaign is WAY to early to make judgements like this. Even Tebow took a while to develop as a complete QB, he wasn't a consistant passer until midway through his sophomore year. I think TP's problems had to do more with the game and the stage and the pressure he put on himself to win the game for his team. I really believe he psyched himself out. He may not have been ready for the big stage, but come Penn State we'll see a much much different Pryor.

Set your avi

I think it is WAY to early to make a judgement like this about Terrelle Pryor. Vince Young was not Vince Young until his he was a junior. Tim Tebow was a great runner, but not great QB until midway through his Sophomore year. Everyone chill out, relax, and let the kid mature. 2 games into his sophomore season he's still going to make mistakes. He will be fine, and by Penn State you'll see a really really good QB.

No, he wasn't on the field for that play. Rolle and Homan should have had him at scrimmage. Rolle over-pursued, then Homan missed at a diving tackle. Russell makes the tackle on the following 3rd and 9 where McKnight outruns Homan for a huge gain. I am pretty sure Russell didn't take the field again.
