Goodbye Carlos Hyde?

Scout is reporting that Hyde is in a bit of academic limbo. He needs a 17 on his ACT to qualify, but the next ACT date in the state of Florida is 9/12. At this point, it’s probably safe to say he won’t be hitting the field this season and if he wants to remain a Buckeye, will have to enroll winter quarter and work towards next season.

Hyde is the 2nd of two star Florida running backs the Buckeyes signed for this class that have been in the news lately for things they’d probably rather not be. This could mean some love for Jordan Hall at running back this season, but at the very least, makes the Rod Smith get even bigger than it was when it was announced last week.

Jeeze…I honestly don’t even trust Rod Smith on the fact that he’ll qualify next year.

All I can say is “Holy Buckeye”, one minute we’re all chatting up the boards on Hyde and how he’s being compared to Wells and the next time I chime in I hear this crap? I’m sure JT will iron out these wrinkles, I’d like to think JT’s a good judge of character…? The whole Berry thing and now this, has me really scratching my head…! At the end of last season I had soo much hope for this year, now I have more questions than anything. Our OL, T Pryors throwing motiong, the WR’s, the DL and now the new recruits…? We have USC coming to town sooner than we think, this s__t has to stop. This team needs to focus on the season at hand with the tools it has. Does anyone have any words of encouragement..?

      “Rockys chopping the Russian down!!”

We will be fine. I liked what I saw in the spring game. Boren brings mental toughness to the o line. Homan is going to have a break out year. LIC is a vet now. Ray Small – can only get better.

      • Brian says:

If anything, Boren is just what this line needs. I mean when Boone, was the vocal leader last year and well he was an idiot. Boren has fire in his belly, and he’s good. He’s just what all these young and talented linemen need. I think the O-Line and D-Line will anchor this team to have one hell of a year.

As for the running backs, why is everyone worried about 2 freshman running backs, that may not have fit into the equation much this year anyways. Boom is really good. I remember thinking last year when Beanie would come out of the game, man this guy would be starting at a lot of schools. He just always seemed to get tough yards up the middle and I like him a lot. Also, Saine has shown flashes of brilliance in the past, and if healthy, I believe he’s going to step up and shine this year. I think his availability is much more important than freshman who have never played.

This team sets up to be pretty good this year and I’m excited to see them in action, sure there are some questions marks, but last year coming into the season, everything seemed to be looking really good, and it wasn’t a failure of a season, but it wasn’t the season they expected either. I’m very very excited about this team and the talent. Some of it may be young but that doesn’t bother me either.

    Benny, “Never Quit”…will that work?

  4. gbm says:

truthfully, I was more excited for Hall than the other two anyways

  5. Anonymous says:

the last time we had a RB attend prep school in VA it worked out pretty nicely for us

  6. BuckeyeChief says:

Eddie was the only good thing to ever come out of Philly. I bet he’s crushed over McNair.

  7. RBuck says:

Berry just got a shorter stay in Tress’ doghouse.

  8. GA. Buckeye says:

The Dispatch just confirmed he’s out until January.

  9. Corey says:

I don’t think this affects the 2009 squad at all. Even though I thought Hyde would see some action, it is going to be hard to overtake Herron, Saine and LiC in the backfield. In Tressel’s years here, I can’t remember him playing more than 2 RB’s consistently. Now he doesn’t have to worry about wasting a redshirt on him and Hyde can come in to concentrate on studies for the next year.

  10. iball says:

I couldn’t see Hyde getting much more than 50 carries this year anyway, unless he was some kind of superstar freshmen, but what are the odds of that?

I think we’ll be just fine, this is what happens when you recruit top talent. Now instead of wasting a year behind Boom and Saine, he’ll be freshmen along with Rod Smith.

Wonder if this changes how Tressel views Erick Howard in any way? I know this wasn’t a huge year for HS Rb’s in Ohio, but winning Mr. Football as a Jr. is still pretty impressive, I’d really like to have this kid.

    • Jason says:

I think if you’re going for Howard (or another back in the next class besides Smith), you keep going after them. I hope Hyde ends up in Columbus, but sadly the odds say he probably won’t.

      • iball says:

I can’t understand how you aspire to play college football and let your academic situation deteriorate to the point that it virtually ends your career.

Maybe this isn’t the kind of kid we want anyway. Another Ray Small. At least Jamaal Berry takes care of the football end first.

  11. Carlos Hyde says:

Rod Smith is the big back Ohio State needs that Carlos Hyde was going to be this season.
