The NCAA Might Be Closing in on USC
This is our first “shorty” — kind of inspired by SBNation’s FanPosts, but more or less a way for us to move more items off of Good Shizzy for commenting.
Yahoo! Sports continues with their solid investigation into Reggie Bush, O.J. Mayo and other alleged transgressions at USC:
Yahoo! Sports has identified 17 individuals who have been interviewed at least once – and some multiple times – by the NCAA. However, that number is believed to only be a small portion of those who have met with NCAA investigators in connection with the USC probe. The NCAA also has been in contact with other ancillary individuals. That includes lawyers involved in Lake’s civil suit against Bush.
Two sources also have confirmed the NCAA has spoken with the FBI, which is investigating dealings between Mayo and Guillory. ESPN reported that Guillory received more than $200,000 to steer Mayo to sports agency Bill Duffy Associates (BDA) following his lone season at USC.
With talk of Tim Floyd paying for Mayo and the continuing Bush revelations, is this real trouble brewing or a case of the Teflon U dodging another bullet?

if something concrete in the way of sanctions happens as a result of this, i will be shocked
Nothing is going to happen unless USC reports itself as having done something wrong or negligent. The time for something to happen was 3 years ago. I’d be shocked if this went beyond handwaving and finger-pointing. The culture of “do-no-wrong” at USC is staggering. In Stewart Mandel’s book, he described a thread posting by a USC fan in light of the Bush scandal saying something to the effect of, “We need to put a team of USC lawyers on this NOW.”
They figure that since everyone does it, it’s okay to do it, and if they get caught, they feel they have the resources to dodge any consequences. $poiled Children is only half of it.
It’s been 10 years and USC has still only won as many national championships as the Buckeyes…so screw them.
well i read last night that someone at USC did admit to knowing about the whole OJ Mayo thing.
the sucky part of this is despite all of the wrongdoing, they can’t get the death penalty since they didn’t get in trouble last time, so there’s no prior convictions.
oh! and btw Jason, I like this format a lot better than the good shizzy. Thanks!
Thanks, Nik. We’ll try not to overdue it lest Good Shizzy turn into a pop culture wasteland of links.
Things look pretty bad on the bball side, but I’m not sure what, if anything, might happen as a result of the Bush allegations. The hater in me says “fu*k USC. Throw the book at them,” but the other part of me can empathize what it is like being the object of national hatred and assuming that because your program is successful, you have to be cheating (nice run-on sentence flunkie).
I generally despise the NCAA as draconian, punitive entity that always seems to have its own agenda (normally self-promotion and making money).
isn’t this old news? reggie bush and his entire fam were getting paid. not really a shock that USC runs a dirty program. the coach has a giant ego which is why he sucked in the NFL.
A lot of the things being thrown around about USC – paid players, steroids, etc. – are things that are thrown around about every major college program, including Ohio State. For once, it appears the evidence is on the side of the bitter bastards who are tired of getting their asses kicked by said major program.
However, college basketball recruiting is just plain dirty. This doesn’t excuse Tim Floyd or OJ Mayo. But… it’s dirty. Dirtier than Jack Abramoff and Bernie Madoff mudwrestling in speedos, and far more unsightly. Be careful what you wish for with this.
It seems like dirty recruiting is a natural consequence of forcing players who would otherwise go pro to “one-and-done.” These are guys who are good enough to play pro, but the NBA is arbitrarily prohibiting it.
The NFL has a similar policy, of course, but it’s not as problematic: how many guys are good enough to go pro right out of high school? The NFL’s policy seems to be more a case of the teams getting together and agreeing that it’s best if the teams get 3 years to see how players develop, whereas the NBA’s… well, I’m not sure what the purpose of the NBA’s rule is, but the only consequence I can see is dirty basketball recruiting.
Teflon U will dodge another bullet. I hope they get their nuts kicked in the shoe!
Just to clarify – I hope USC gets kicked in the nuts when they come to The Shoe this year.
Wrapping up the investigation in So Cal will free up resources to look into that semi-pro team in Columbus. Still the same car dealership right? People in glass houses…
yes, i think its the Ed Martin dealership on State Street.
Or The Car Store?
no, no, i think it was the probation model with loss of scholarships and wins from the ed martin dealership. i could be wrong. you troll the internet, so you probably know better than i.
It’s not that other (all?) programs don’t cheat. It’s that USC never gets caught even though they are investigated pretty frequently. It’s time for USC to face the music like the rest of us.
Witty moniker. Worthington comes from a rather affluent family, so the Escalade isn’t really indicative of improper practices at Ohio State.
Not saying that they don’t happen. Saying you’re an uninformed retard shooting from the lip.
They will let the bball program take the fall to keep focus off the fball program. Who cares about USCum bball anyway.
Everybody that goes to that school looks like they may have some vunereal disease.
in other news, miss california gets to keep her crown. hmmmm, like i care, but still it’s california….land of the clean cut.
