Your Football in April Open Thread

Happy BlitzesHappy Blitzes

Live, televised, streamed or through the radio, no matter how you’re taking in the Spring Game, this is your spot to talk about it. (If you are unsure how you’ll tune in to the scrimmage, this should do the trick.)

Our day is booked. From hitting up the Buck Icon tailgate party first thing in the morning, to paying homage to the Varsity Club in honor of its 50th birthday, to the actual gridiron action, followed by the Football Frenzy charity event and last, but not least, culminating in the 11W Spring Game Social* at Park Street Patio (with one eye on the NFL draft), we’re going to be busy peeps.

As such, our involvement in this open thread will be ultra-spotty at best, but in our absence, BuckeyeChief is in charge. And if he wants you to drop and give him 20 or would like to inspect your footlocker, well, he’s a Chief after all.

If you’ve read this far, we’ll reward your patronage by closing with a quick contest. Be the first to post a comment with the name of the Buckeye that scores the first touchdown today and you’ll win a free t-shirt from the 11W Store (must include valid email address with comment, no dupes, etc, etc.).

* Save your ticket from the Spring Game or bring one of our limited edition flyers (to be passed out at Football Frenzy) to get a quick wristband for the event.

Flash and Anderson Russell back to return the opening kickoff. Let’s do this.

  24. Bucksfan says:

Wow, sloppy first exchange from Scarlet…2 bad plays by Gray to start the drive.

  25. Bucksfan says:

Fumble recovery deep in Scarlet’s territory…3 plays 8 yards and a field goal…PATHETIC! No excuses, that should have been a TD…are they making any fucking strides at all from last year?!

  26. Powers says:

    There it is Flash

  27. Kris (Chicago) says:

Woody Hayes = 3 yards and a cloud of dust
Jim Tressel = 3 downs and a field goal

  28. Bucksfan says:

Good 2nd drive by Scarlet…I knew they had a few more playmakers than Gray on offense, and they’re showing it.

  29. Powers says:

  30. Rob says:

    Moeller is fast!

  31. Bucksfan says:

Pryor has some rust, there is no doubt. Looks like he’s still having vision problems. Good 2nd attempt to Ray Ray, but another disappointing drive. Bad play calling running off-tackle with a no-namer.

    Gibson 2 UA, 0 A

    Moeller – 1 sack
    Gibson – 2 sacks

  62. Dean says:

Does Fickell normally coach one of the teams? Does this mean that, as “co-defensive coordinator,” he’s eclipsed Jim Heacock?

  63. BuckeyeSki says:

  66. BuckeyeSki says:

  69. BuckeyeSki says:

    95K in attendance too, wow

  70. Jason says:

95,722 – New national record for spring game attendance. Where you at Saban?

  71. Bucksfan says:

    Oh man…major hit.

  72. Bucksfan says:

What’s with the no-name RB’s ripping huge ones and playing tough?! Are we that deep? The touted freshman aren’t even on campus yet!

  73. Dean says:

    who is #24? lousy broadcast…

  74. Bucksfan says:

Red-zone TDs are still NOT happening! Must get better.

    • Sam says:

That offense was walk-on-laden. I wouldn’t hold it against them. The defense with actual starters tightened up; that’s the bright spot.

      • Bucksfan says:

Fair enough…but they’re merely mimicking what the starters have done in this game.

  75. Bucksfan says:

WHO IS JOE GANTZ?! Guy’s a beast.

  76. Jason says:

Eight minute fourth quarter. Tress must have got injury spooked.

  77. Jason says:

Announcer just said Bauserman was “whacked” by Brian Rolle.

  78. Bucksfan says:

Whelp, looks like nothing much more is going to occur in this one…the O-linemen have a lot of work to do, Pryor didn’t look all that much better than he did last year, when Bauserman led the offense, it looked like they could make things happen, but never did – makes me think of Boeckman. T-Wash, and T-Moe look very, very solid. Hope to see more of them.

However, when they had the most success was at the end of the 2nd half when they treated it like a video game, fearlessly bombing away with Pryor. Let’s do it!

    • J.B. says:

Did I watch the same Spring Game? Pryor looked MUCH more improved….MUCH, MUCH more than what I was expecting and it’s only the Spring.

The only knock that I had on Pryor was his elbow still seemed to be lower than I would have liked to have seen, but you can’t expect a complete change in his throwing motion in a 4 month time frame.

His footwork however is like night and day and where he’s picked up that power from. Though he was wide open, his pass to Wash was on the money… The pass to Small was PERFECT! Yes, Small was the reason the play went for 6, but that ball couldn’t have been thrown any better.

The only bad throw I saw from Pryor was the Fade route in the first quarter. He needed more air under it, but really every other pass he threw looked a lot better than last year.

      • J.B. says:

I don’t know if this is 100% and I don’t think stats mean a lot in a Spring Game, but Pryor was 13-18 191yrds and 2TDs first half… It’s hard, for me anyway, to not be impressed by what Pryor did.

      • Bucksfan says:

They went vertical, he threw 2 TD’s in 2 minutes of over 40 yards a piece. Throwing one would have been a major improvement over last season. This is a major progression. Now, they just need to hit the field and do it off the bat…no more of this stalling deep in enemy territory off a turnover. It was certainly an outstanding 2 minutes, we need a great hour from this kid each Saturday…particularly in the 2nd game next year.

  79. Rob says:

    Hines just ran someone over

  80. BuckeyeSki says:

Moeller is the MVP from where I sit. Dude looked nasty, quick as hell, and smart out there. Took the right angle to the ball-carrier everytime, and was in on almost all D stops. Look to see alot outta him this season.

  81. Bucksfan says:

Proposal for next year: Promote Luke Fickle.

  82. Rob says:

    Denlinger had a nice game!

  83. Rob says:

Kudso to big ten network for running a reliable real-time video stream!

  84. Dave N says:

    So… Who’s got the torrent?

  85. bup bup bup says:

i still like Boom as the starter, but shit, i might have to think about the merits of this multi-back thing with what i saw out of saine today. homeboy looked GOOD

  86. Corey says:

What a great day down at the Shoe. Is Beanie going to slip to the Browns at #21?

  87. texasbuckeye says:

Not as much $$ as Beanie was expecting. Really surprised the Browns didn’t grab him, taking a center that high doesn’t make much sense to me.

    • Ryan B. says:

The Browns always disappoint me. You can get a quality center later in the draft. Beanie at 21 or 22 whatever it was, would have been perfect….

  88. bup bup bup says:

i think Beanie goes to New England. as soon as philly passed on him i thought that was the most likely spot

  89. bup bup bup says:

also i don’t know if you guys caught this, but Tressel wore his hawaiian shirt today and the granny shades. i have (blurry) pics, it’s amazing

  90. tampa buckeye says:

it would be sick to see beanie go to the steelers

    • tampa buckeye says:

Cards? or steelers? beanie would fit in great in pittsburgh

      • dirty6 says:

hoooooly crap beanie isn’t even the second RB picked. who the hell is donald brown? uconn plays football?

beanie shoulda come back and shut up the skeptics about his injury issues, this decision to go to the nfl is costing him lots of cash.

        • bup bup bup says:

i don’t know, i think leaving was still probably the right move. if he isn’t in the 1st round, he’ll certainly be in the second. if he got hurt next year he might fall to 3rd or 4th

          • bup bup bup says:

also Beanie to the steelers would be awesome, and i’m a bengals fan

  91. bup bup bup says:

Beanie to arizona probably, that’s a great place for him

    • Sam says:

Agreed. They need the firepower on the ground.

      • bup bup bup says:

yeah, and they made a good point about the arizona offense being able to spread people out so Beanie might not be facing 11 dudes all geared up to stop him anymore. ALSO Beanie celebrating with his 57 siblings = awesome

        • Sam says:

Well, bup, the Bengals took Maualuga. Is it just me, or do they pride themselves on taking players that have terrorized OSU in the past? Chris Perry, Rey-Rey, Kijana Carter….

          • bup bup bup says:

yeah, i don’t get it either, makes it hard to root for them sometimes. on the other hand, their general terribleness also makes it hard to root for them sometimes.

i do like the rey-rey pick, they need DTs (and have for years now), but him in the 2nd round is a steal of a deal. hopefully andre smith pans out, talent wise he was the right pick.

i’d probably feel better about him if i had never seen him with his shirt off

          • Sam says:

Yeah, I like the pick too, but…. Ray Lewis struggled when didn’t have a DT. The Bengals have needed a DT since Dan Wilkinson didn’t pan out. I’d be fine if we traded a pick or two to get someone better than Tank frickin’ Johnson

          • bup bup bup says:

yeah i have no idea why they thought tank johnson was someone they should ever even talk to ever.

        • tampa buckeye says:

Sounds like he’ll start next year once they get rid of Edge, but the real question is what are the browns thinking passing on this guy? D Brown before beanie will give him a huge chip on his shoulder.

          • bup bup bup says:

i can understand it if it’s based mostly on offensive schemes, the colts and other teams probably want dudes who can catch and run out of the backfield, and Beanie isn’t going to do that.

the cardinals have like a billion dudes who can catch the ball, Beanie gives them that mean, nose to the grindstone mentality in running they don’t have.

  92. NaptownBuckeye says:

First off, one HELL of a crowd! I never wouldve guessed 95k+! Bama can suck deez nuts. I was very happy to see the amount of spread/shotgun plays called. Not having Beanie will force Tress to open up the playbook this year. At least I hope so. Walking back to the car I passed Joyner signing autographs outside one of the gates and asked him what he thought. The kid was amazed. Hopefully the weather, crowd and facilities make it an easy decision for him. Is it September yet?

  93. sam2 says:

two concerns: pryor getting thrown out for talking trash
tressel continues to hate on t washington! “needs to be more consistent”…he catches an f’n td pass every spring, what more do you want?!

    • bup bup bup says:

“two concerns: pryor getting thrown out for talking trash”

reading the transcript, think this might’ve been a little tongue in cheek

      so was this:

“COACH TRESSEL: Yeah, Taurian did a great job.

REPORTER: What do you see different about him this spring now?

COACH TRESSEL: Those little wristbands that he had on the top of his calves, that’s what I saw different. We’ve got to straighten that out. I don’t know if he’s got difficulty with his blood flow or what.”

      ZING

    • bup bup bup says:

hahaha also (re: the hawaiian shirt and granny shades):

“REPORTER: Why do you think there was 95,000 here this year, as opposed to previous years?

COACH TRESSEL: I think it was warm, that was probably the biggest thing.

REPORTER: But there have been beautiful days before and haven’t drawn that many, 70 or –

      COACH TRESSEL: Yeah.

SHELLY POE: I think we stepped into the fashion crowd today.

COACH TRESSEL: Yeah, appealed to a whole other audience. I better go.”

      • J.B. says:

I kinda like the fire Pryor has and don’t look at him jawing it up after a play as so much of a concern. We need that fire and that “swagger” (can’t believe I just said that…I hate that word)… I would much rather have that, than a guy like Todd who looked like he was going to tuck his tail between his legs and run back to the locker room.

However, I do like that Tress is trying to reel some of that it. As great as it is to have that attitude, he needs to learn to harness it a little more than he does and use the fire to lite up his line.

All and all, I really don’t see a young kid that has a pair willing to scrap for this team as a bad thing….so long as it doesn’t turn into taking 15 yards backwards and physical contact.

    • buckeyeinsider44 says:

I was at the press conference– Pryor “ejected” was certainly tongue in cheek– Tress, LiC and Worthington were all laughing about it

      • sam2 says:

        thats good to hear

      • J.B. says:

Its obvious from what I saw from the presser, that yes, the comments were made from a lighter side. That being said, I believe that there was some preaching behind the grins and laughs. This is still the same Tress that got upset about a late 4th quarter score last year. You can’t tell me that the guy doesn’t get upset when he sees the leader talkin some shiz (even if it is all in fun and in the heat of the moment).

Like I said I like that side of Pryor, but I have to believe there was some truth to what Tress was trying to say. Pryor was visibly upset in the 4th quarter and its odd that Tress would joke about it without there being some sort of meaning….even if his jokes are a little dry

  94. buckeyedude says:

Went to the game with my 15 year old son and his friend(first time in Ohio Stadium for him) and was thoroughly impressed with the 95,000+ fans in the stands! Incredible for a PRACTICE game. Wow! Ohio State has THEE best fans in college football, bar none.

Was impressed with Taurian Washington, Posey and of course Pryor. Really hope that Saine and Boom can tag team defenses in place of Beanie.

What a great day! Beautiful weather, girls all over the place, and Buckeye football! Can’t do better than that!

  95. buckeyedude says:

Also, I was hoping to more of Lamaar “speed kills” Thomas, and got my wish, but the man has to learn to hold on to the ball. I don’t think he should be returning kickoffs until he can catch.

    • Nik says:

absolutely agree with that, i’d hate to see him lose the ball like that in a game that counts

  96. buckeyedude says:

Damn! I forgot about James Jackson! He played a real good game too and seemed to be getting good separation from defenders for Bauserman to hit him behind D linemen. This kid’s going to get significant playing time, I predict. We’re stacked with linebackers and receivers.

  97. Sam says:

Pryor sure is in the spotlight, isn’t he? Even the slightest bit of jawing is scrutinized.

  98. Reminds me of Bristol says:

I, and a fellow reader (possibly related to me), hit up park street. We drank from 9am-time of post and…ran from the cops at some time in between…with all due respect, Mr. and Ms. Authority…we love what you do…but, we fast like flash and shifty like ginn swimmin in butter…we got away.

    • Anonymous says:

Reminds me of taking an Ambien before the Michigan game last year and watching Beanie run at 450 mph.

  99. Wil says:

I may or may not be the related poster……my cousin TJ may or may not be the previous poster……..we may or may not have consumed large quantities of alcohol…………we may or may not have shown up at park street patio and left before anyone showed up…….we may or may not have evaded the authorities…..we may or may not have been successful……we may or may not still be intoxicated……..this may or may not remind us of Bristol……we may or may not be out of hound………

    …..we are out of hound.

  100. tampa buckeye says:

let me just say if i was a browns fan i would be pissed the fuck off. beanie was sitting there at 21 and you go with who? come on!!!! come on!!!! 235lbs and 4.5 speed just doesn’t come around everyday. The cards will be sweet next year.

  101. Reminds me of Bristol says:

This may or may not have been the best spring game of all time.

p.s.-I may or may not have an extreme urge to go back to Bristol.

  102. RBuck says:

After seeing Moeller and Spitler perform, I don’t think we’ll have any problem at LB. Corners are definately a concern.

Really liked the crossing patterns with Pryor hittin the WR’s in stride. Haven’t seen that for a while. As usual the TE’s are MIA.

    • tampa buckeye says:

keeping alot of things under wraps im sure for usc. We have lots of talented wideouts for sure. This team will surprise some people this year. The lines will be much improved once they find the right combination. Pryor had some nice looking throws one of which he threw over the linebacker into the zone. DB’s looked good really no reason for concern at any position. Saine is a beast when healthy.

      • Nik says:

I’m sorry, but there’s no way i’m buying the “keeping things under wraps” argument again… not after last year

        • Dean says:

You don’t understand! Last year, we were keeping things under wraps for USC THIS year! It’s all part of the grand scheme to embarass them so badly that they can’t recruit anymore.

        • Sam says:

Thank you for saying it for me. Nothing is being kept under wraps. What from the USC game last year was being kept under wraps? Todd Boeckman option on 3rd and 22? That supercool trick play where we pass right to Rey Maualuga and he scores (for the other team)?

  103. BuckeyeSki says:

    sooooooo…..how was the social?

  104. sam2 says:

5 things from the spring game please!

  105. iball says:

I think the o-line looked like crap. We better improve a whole lot before USC comes to town or itll be national embarrassment part 4.

    • iball says:

Oh yeah, the Bengals crushed the Browns in the draft and it will show on the field this year, who dey?

I hated Maualuga until about 6pm yesterday, now he’s my boy. Holla!

  106. Josh_Alum says:

you can’t judge an O-line in the spring game. They’re divided up, moved around, and don’t have the reps as a unit yet.
    That’ll come in the fall.

    I saw:
1: Pryor looked like a real quarterback at time, throwing with authority.
2: Our Linebackers are going to be fine, Moeller/Homan/Spitler
3: D-line looks faster than it did last year
4: Ray Small may no longer be a ghost.
5: Starting three recievers are Devier Posey, Dane Sansenbacher, and Ray Small, with T-wash in on 4 reciever sets.
