Duane Long, one of the MVPs of the Bucknuts operation has decided to branch out on his own and has been filling up the RSS feed with gold for about the last three weeks.
In one of his latest posts, he evaluates the Buckeye staff as recruiters and though you may not be surprised to see Tressel and Fickell at the top of the list, seeing Heacock at the bottom is a little unnerving:
Paul Haynes and Jim Heacock get Ds. I don't recall a major recruit either was responsible for landing. I have never spoken to a recruit that said either one impressed them. In fact, I can only recall twice when I spoke to a recruit and he could not recall who was recruiting him for Ohio State. Both times the coach ended up being Jim Heacock.
Guess that's just more ammunition for those clamoring for his ouster.

wow...
I think Heacock's a very good coach. Other coaches on the offensive side should retire but not Jim.
any reason why you say that? or are you just being sarcastic?
I don't think Heacock is ALL bad....his Defenses' are consitently in the top 5 year in and year out. But we all give him shit because of that weak soft zone that kills us in OOC games. Bollman, on the other hand, should be let go IMMEDIATLY regardless of his loyalty.....
All of my optimism for the Terrelle Pryor era in Columbus is tempered because the Jims that aren't named Tressel are still around.
It's pretty easy to rack up the stats we do against offensive powerhouses like Iowa, Penn State under Morelli, Michigan State, so on and so forth.
Truth be told my friend....
Agreed, the only person beating TP in the next two hopefully three years ( I think so), will be the coaching staff.
He may not turn out to be an NFL star, but I really think he'll be that dominant.
Why are Heacock and Bollman still here?
We did show up against PSU this year, although they may have been a tad O.R.
Duane Long has been lashing out at Heacock. He says the defense only stepped up after, what he believed, was Luke Fickell getting an actual CO in the CO-defensive coordinator position.
And I believe him.
Ironically, it was probably a Fickell call that cost us the Texas game...and I'm completely fine with that because it wasn't that soft zone shit from the Florida, Illinois, LSU, or USC games.
Oh yea,
Nick Sheridan broke his leg in a Michigan practice yesterday and Cone may have a broken had.
It's Forcier vs the world. Luckily, the world is just the Michigan defense.
In that situation, a deeper zone would have probably worked, wouldn't it? Sixteen seconds left (that number is burned into my brain, btw), a tackle ten yards downfield means Texas, who didn't have timeout, has to rush to the line and call one last desperation heave.
My memory may be fuzzy, but I seem to remember thinking that - hey, we blitzed, at the worst possible time, of course.
It's almost as if Duane Long's post was entirely set up to give two guys D's...since everyone else got A's or B's.
I'm really sick of thinking about Heacock and Bollman. I want to be really jacked for next year's talent. I mean, we're talking blazing new speed at receiver and RB, probably some young impact LB's that are just starting their career, a brand new O-line that on paper SHOULD be better than last year, and a QB that simply WILL put us in position to win games, even if it has to mean we need to outscore some opponents. But will we ever see any of this stuff work?
The problem with getting rid of a Bollman or a Heacock is that they aren't THAT bad. It's hard to take something that isn't REALLY broke and try and fix it.
Ask Tuberville. That whole revolutionary change sent him packing and now they've got Gene Chizik. Now this isn't Auburn and we aren't as quite as fucked in the head, but there's always the possibility of something worse.
That said, I hope they both retire.
Poe, I thought about agreeing with you about how they aren't THAT bad. And from a historical perspective, maybe future Buckeyes will look back on these teams and say, "Wow, 4 straight Big Ten titles, what an accomplishment!" or "Holy sh*t, 5 (6, 7, however many it will be) straight over Michigan, you've gotta be kidding me!" And to that extent, fair enough, it's pretty impressive on paper (no one will remember just how lame our conference has been).
But, 41-14? 38-24 (closer than it really was)? 35-frickin'-3??!?! Say what you will about the loss in the Coliseum, but what's so embarrassing to me about that game (and I've talked with SC students about this in person), is that their fans were truly expecting a good, entertaining game. Even from a "this is a game, this should be fun regardless as long as its close" perspective, the Buckeyes are failing to deliver on catastrophic proportions.
So we matched up well with Texas in the Fiesta Bowl, okay great, we can stop a 1-dimensional team (I don't care if they're good) almost long enough to win, while our quintuple-threat attack (Pryor as receiver, Boeckman throwing) had a strangely-productive 15 minutes of football at the end.
Something is seriously wrong with how this kind of NFL talent is being used or prepared for games by this staff. Sometimes, golf instructors will tell a long-time golf addict to switch putters for a while if they're having problems. Why? Because sometimes a change of scenery can do the trick. Ohio State should have its pick of coordinators and line coaches. Maybe it's time for a rotation.

That's why we're not getting rid of them. Looks like the SEC will continue to get more talented ass's because they don't mind spending a brazillion dollars on them. That's just the way it is in this day and age. Sad.
That is a stunning article, poop. It's been known for a while now that the SEC head coaches are about a half-million dollars higher than the next conference on the ladder on average. Didn't realize the assistants in that league are making more than what some head coaches are making. There's absolutely no way Ohio State can compete with salaries that are more than TWICE what we're paying them now.
Pretty disgusting. SEC coaches' salaries: out of hound?
Not at all. We are the top grossing AD in the country, our reluctance to pay those salaries is costing us millions in additional licensing sales following NC's and other big wins. Bet big, win big. We can't assume our half-assed assistant stable will give us double the returns of their value, it's absurd. We should have Walt Harris and Dick LeBeau...OK that might be slightly Yankee-esque but seriously, could we not afford to chip off solid 7 figure salaries for that type of prowess? We should be looking for top tier assistants with a "best case scenario" mentality. Of course, we need to start the aforementioned "looking" prior to getting riled up about that. I don't want to be Auburn (firing OC mid-season) but there has to be SOME SEMBLANCE of accountability (and responsibility for that matter). If this were a publicly traded business and levels of said business had failed miserably (embarrassed the business on a national level) in certain aspects of functionality (see: offensive line play) those in charge of said failure would be held responsible...fired. CEO's don't eat it; directors eat it. This is my real issue, what if we go 10-2, BCS also-ran bubble with a loss to SC and some Big10 foe...we will have garnered zero respect / basically have made zero progress and from past experience, the coordinators will stay. Do we have to go 6-6 before a change happens? Please.God.no.
I don't mind a change, and I respect what Harris and LeBeau have done/are doing, but LeBeau is what, 72 or something like that. Not sure on Harris but I know he is at least in his 60's isn't he? I would much rather get one of the young studs to help with recruiting etc than a couple of septegenarians (although I absolutely LOVE LeBeau).
Why havent I heard anything about our S & C coaches? If there is one thing that I remember about all of our bad losses is the physical beat down the opposing team put on us. I dont understand that at all. OSU gets the same recrutis that USC, Florida, and LSU get yet somehow they are able to get them to a higher physical state then we can. I hope the new team we are putting on the field this year has a bit more of a mean streak in them. I think that alone would solve a lot of our issues in big games. If we get hit in the mouth we cant buckle.
The problem is that the money is spread out over 36 sports. As mentioned in the article Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, and Florida only have around 20. I think the new boathouse needs to be nixed in favor of a few new, better ass's. Sorry rowing team but $5 million is way too much :(

While I generally agree, Philly has a good thing going with their boathouses:
