Adams, Shugarts Caught With Drug Paraphernalia

So much for a quiet off season...

Ken Gordon reported earlier tonight that Mike Adams and J.B. Shugarts were pulled over January 14th for blowing a stop sign leading to each being charged with one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Neither player was arrested and both have plead not guilty with pre-trial hearings set for Monday (Adams) and Wednesday (Shugarts).

While the charge is only a fourth degree misdemeanor carrying a max of 30 days in the hole and a $250 fine, this is the not the way these two were hoping to make the news.

No comment yet from Tressel.

UPDATE: The charges against Adams have been dropped. Both players are said to have aced on-the-spot drug tests. Awesome.

Ohio State has yet to place in the top 5 of the Fulmer Cup. Let's hope this isn't the year we break that streak.

But hey, we have the frontrunner for the LT job and the possible starter at RT busted for keeping a bong in their car (stupid), on an offensive line that already was probably not going to be stellar to start the year. You know, like it hasn't been three years running. What are we supposed to think? I'm pissed. I'm also hoping Tressel plays this one with streetsmarts and sits them for a series or two against Navy. Urban Meyer would approve of such a punishment.

Set your avi
Phil on 1 Mar 2009 - 2:15pm #

I know these particular offenses are not very big,,,but by God I am fed up with condoning this behavior, combined with Boone's arrest, Worthington's DUI, Clifford's bar fight, and Williams shoplifting, this marks the 5th and 6th Buckeyes arrested since July.

I don't care if most of them are minor offenses. I am sick and tired as a fan of having to defend this type of behavior.

Tressel and his staff have had 8 years now to try and weed this type of behavior out of the program and simply put he have failed. His track record is no better than Cooper's, or Ayers' when it comes to off the field incidents.

Yes I know other programs have similar issues, and that some are worse than us,,,simply put I don't care about other programs!!!

I have been a fan of OSU for more than 40 years and the off the field track record over the past 15-20 years is simply embarrassing for both the Basketball and football programs.

The number of arrests is disgraceful.

Besides the 6 guys in the past 6 months we can add in Terry Glenn's naked drunk running incident, TJ Downing's drug charges, Santonio Holmes drug charges, Noopy Crater's drug charges, James Scott being kicked off Ole Miss's team, Matt Sylvester wreckless operation nearly hitting a cop, Jamar Butler's drug charges, Derek Foster being convicted of shooting 2 cops, Jason Simmons conviction on sexual battery of a middle school girl, and on and on and on.

This now marks over 30 times a player has been arrested in the 8 years Tressel has been the coach.

MOC twice, Brandon Joe, AJ Trapasso twice, Ira Guilford, Irrizarry twice, Boone twice, Marco Cooper, Troy Smith, Santonio Holmes, Eric Haw, Jonathon Skeete, Lydell Ross, Albert Dukes, Nathan Williams, Worthington, Clifford, Adams, Shugarts, Brandon Maupin, Tim Schafer, Pagac Jr, Pitcock, Reggie Arden, Angelo Chattams, Steve Bellisari, Derek Ross

add in Troy's $500 handshake, Bollman's car loan ncaa violation, Downing, Wilhlem and Holmes being charged after leaving, and the list is nearly endless.

I am not even counting the Washington's, Smalls, Vance's etc, who were suspended for violating team rules,,,

30+ arrests in 8 year is disgraceful. That's 1 every 3 months!!!!

The losses are bad enough, but part of the reason I lost enthusiasm for for OSU at the end of the Cooper years was the off the field issues. With this latest spate of arrests, Tressel's staff has proven they have done nothing to repair this. If anything it may be worse.

I know the graduation rates have improved,,, so what, so the football team has finally gotten to within 20% of the general student body afer nearly a decade at the helm...sorry but not good enough.

I have had it, I am thru with rooting for criminals and prima donnas,,,,as a famous line from an old movie put it. I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.

Let me be the 1st,,,Tressel must go!!!

These guys probably packed on a few pounds in the offseason anyway.

Tressel had better come down hard on these kids or he can expect it to happen again.

BTW El Caballo de Sangre, I did a term paper in college on the effects to society that legalization of marijuana would have. I interviewed the Toledo Police Chief at the time, Rep. Marcy Kaptur(D) and others, and most agreed it would eliminate drug king pins and raise money for the gubment. I also read a paper by William F. Buckley, the founder of the Conservative movement, that he supported legalization. The down side is the "message" it would send to kids like Mike and J.B., i.e., that it's OK to do. I'm not saying I support legalization, but it is a debate worth having(in other forums).

Set your avi
Dean on 1 Mar 2009 - 3:34pm #

Speeding and not wearing seatbelts aren't CRIMINAL acts. They're civil infractions, much more minor, and the big difference is that they don't really have any societal disapproval attached to them (not to mention that you can't go to jail for simple speeding. Reckless operation of a motor vehicle is another matter, but that's not as common as speeding): when applying for a (non-driving) job, nobody asks if you've ever gotten a speeding ticket, but they ALWAYS ask if you've been convicted of a felony, and often ask if you've been convicted of any misdemeanors.

So anyway, the point is, it's not a flaw in his reasoning: 100% of people commit these minor civil infractions, but you'd be hard pressed to find another criminal law that proscribes behavior engaged in by 40% of the populace. The size of that number also suggests that the laws are terribly out of step with public opinion: do you imagine that more than 50% of the population wants to jail everyone who's ever smoked weed? Lots of people would balk at jail, my own (admittedly completely unscientific) guess is that the most you could get 50% of people to agree with is that there should be fines for marijuana use.

Set your avi
Dean on 1 Mar 2009 - 3:36pm #

But then, why ISN'T it ok to do? Seems like everyone does it, and I'm unconvinced that it results in any more societal harm per user than, say, alcohol.

Hey, I'll keep the fire going even though it seems to be dying out...

You ask why it ISNT ok to do? Well, good luck being a politician with this on your agenda, for starters.

Second, there is some subtle racism in the legislative reality. If you were to look at the population of prison inmates convicted and serving time for marijuana related criminal offenses, I suspect an extremely disproportionate number of them would be African American. Then add in three-strikes laws (remember kids, its not just that we make marijuana offenses criminal realities, but three offenses like JB and MA and you're going to jail for a long, long time)...

Look, I know I'm playing around with pissing the internet off here with assertions that might rustle with folks' opinions and a complete lack of, you know, DATA to prove my point, so I'm saying this with some trepidation...

You ask why it ISNT legal? Well, I suggest that at least one factor for why it is still illegal is the simple fact that it is a very cozy, very sterile and very convenient (not to mention effective) way to keep young black males in jail, which is where, subconsciously, the white majority wants to keep them.

Just saying.

I meant only that the poster above me was concerned about legalization on the grounds that it sent the "wrong" message, which implies that such activity is objectively wrong, bad, etc. Completely understandable that it's not legal, given the factors you cited, my only question was, "What makes it something we need to discourage, other than the circular argument that it's against the law?"

Set your avi

Smith also sat during the bowl game (Oklahoma State, Alamo Bowl), but at that point it was unclear whether he was the starter, as Zwick had started most of the season, and Zwick had a good enough game that we didn't really need a change of pace, so maybe he was just sitting because he was the kind-of-sort-of second stringer (can you imagine that?)

Like I said: LEGALIZE IT!

One of the big principles here (even though it doesn't apply specifically in Adams'/Shugarts' case) is that it's generally a suspect situation when the police have to BREAK the law in order to ENFORCE it.

Another is the problems CAUSED by, rather than SOLVED by, the "War On Drugs" formulation (which, unless you're significantly older than me, is the only posture the government's had on this issue in your lifetime). Check out a blog called "The Agitator" and read a few of the posts w/ the tag "Police Professionalism". Haha, this is hilarious. So Adams smokes a regular, normal tobacco pipe, like...um, old white dudes?

a.) Many folks the SEC over are going to bitch that the cops let him off the hook, but that's a lot of corruption-you would have to prove that the 'drug testing' on the pipe was doctored, and you would have to prove that Adam's piss-test was also doctored. I don't see the logic in why the cops would go to the trouble of charging the kids if then they backed down and corrupted the evidence. Personal verdict: I'm buying the cops' story at this point.

b.) This at least answers the 'wait how come they were charged with a bong when you can legally buy a bong to legally smoke tobacco' question. It wasn't a bong, it was an old-white-dude pipe, which I imagine resembles in some way a crack pipe. So, the cops saw the old-white-guy pipe and assumed Adams was smoking crack with it? Is that how the story looks to everyone else or am I making things up in my head here?

I knew a kid who smoked an old-white-guy-pipe in college (seriously, what should we call that). He was uptight, white and had an uptight-white-older-man-father: a Lutheran pastor. That made sense to me, but this is strange.

Set your avi

It's very simple to make the distinction between use of a pipe for marijuana sake and use of a pipe for tobacco. It's all about the resin left in side the pipe. They can test this just like marijuana. In all actuality it would be no different from testing a marijuana leaf compared to a tobacco leaf.

You just don't know what they will do once they get on campus and anyone acting like incidence such as these are some sort of "evidence" that the program is in decline or trouble, you are just unaware of this sort of think happening in other eras. I didn't say anything about the decline of the program, in fact, I think the opposite. All I said is that this 1 guy was a fuck-up. And yes, I'd draft a team based at least somewhat on moral character, wouldn't want a Mike Vick to mess up your fantasy season would ya?

No - it was probably in plain sight. Why would they hide a tobacco pipe? But if you want to keep believing that all police are crooked, don't mind me.

Again - why do you all assume that the search was illegal?? Did one of the players say as much or are all the buckeye potheads here just too paranoid and anti-police?

If the pipe was in plain sight - and why wouldn't it be - there was no conspiracy to cover up any wrong-doings.

But honestly - everyone here who defends pot-smoking should dump their stashes and toss their pipes because the DEA has been illegally monitoring your internet postings and will be raiding your apartments any minute.

Everybody panic!!!
