Is there any chance of this happening today?College football on New Year's day isn't quite what it used to be, but there are still some good ones on tap today. The Big Ten is featured in three of the five games including the first matchup of the day when Iowa tries to continue their second half of the season momentum against the OBC and his Gamecocks in the Outback Bowl (11:00AM/ESPN). The Hawkeyes happen to be the only Big Ten team favored in its bowl game and the conference needs a win in a pretty big way after starting off 0-3 with two of the losses being downright ugly.
Michigan State has a pretty tough test against a healthy Georgia team in the Capital One Bowl (1:00PM/ABC) and of course, there's Penn State and USC in the Rose Bowl Presented By Your Tax Dollars (4:30PM/ABC). Kind of crazy that Vegas is giving Utah about the same chance of beating Alabama as the Nittany Lions are getting to beat the Trojans, but when you consider how dominant USC is in big games and maybe just how bad the Big Ten really is, it's not that out there.
In other action, the Bearcats take on the Hokies in an Orange Bowl (8:30PM/FOX) that will hold some interest in the states of Ohio and Virginia, but little elsewhere and Nebraska squares off with Clemson in the Gator Bowl (1:00PM/CBS).
We have three tied atop the leaderboard in the 11W Bowl Challenge. The entries, including one called nathanwilliams"friend" have gone 15-7 and rank in the top 1% of all entries across ESPN. Still, the top of the standings are tight with 10 other entries within two games of the lead.
In further examples of our readers being smarter than we are, I'm currently tied for 14th with a meager 12-10 record, while Chris is tied for 34th at 10-12 and Corey is in the middle of the pack at 54th with a 9-13 mark.
It was kind of buried in there yesterday, but if you haven't yet, stop by and give your Fiesta Bowl score prediction to win up to two t-shirts from Homage Clothing. They're retro-tastic.
But getting back to today's games, what say you? Do the Nittany Lions and Spartans have a shot? Or will we be looking at a 1-5 or 0-6 conference mark heading into Monday night? And bonus points for listing all of the New Year's resolutions you've already broken.

Comments
Spartans have a shot,
Penn St. could slow the buzzsaw, too bad it will only last for a quarter or so
Big Ten could be 50 % at best
Wow, one post by 10:40! Ya bunch a hungover bastards!
Spartans only chance is to play off emotion, Ringer is a local fave of mine, he will have to have a monster day. I dont see Hoyer making the plays needed to win. Rooting for MSU, but 38-14 UGA.
Penn St. did not perform well against the best D it faced this year(OSU), I think lack of focus cost them the Iowa game. USC 45- PSU 17
Iowa will ride the Greene express again today, plus the Hawkeyes have usually fared well in NYD bowls(I think). Iowa 21- OBC 17
Who gives a shit about Cincy, except for desperate Bengal fans.
I want Penn St to get their asses reamed like a white collar criminal.
Go Iowa, Go Sparty.
I'm pulling for PSU. I always pull for the B10 schools in bowl games. I'm hoping the Rose is a good contest this year.
How is every bodies hangover meter? Happy new Year!
Iowa is too good for the Gamecocks. Again I would've preferred an Iowa v UGA and MSU v SC matchup.
not that I am holding too much hope he'll be back but just saw this quotes from Beanie -
"I don't want to say I'm leaning toward staying or I'm leaning toward going. All I'm saying is I do want to be the best Buckeye to ever come through here."
"I wanted to be the best to ever come through Ohio State," Wells said. "I definitely feel like I haven't accomplished that yet."
No hangover here but last night was pretty tame for me.
I don't think psu has a prayer. Sparty has a half a chance, but I think that depends more on which uga team show up today.
And in so much for-ordained wisdom I predict *ahem* that Iowa will be up on the cocks 21-0 at half. Hopefully they don't blow their lead like northwestern did...
Thank you, Iowa.
Game on! Go 'Hawks
God love Iowa. They're beating those Cocks like they owe them money.
Hey now. Don't make me take the Red line south with all of my Wings gear on.
Nice candy cane socks.
How come you didn't go to the game?
Tickets were going for way too much. I would have loved to have been there.
Good Lord, that would be just about the best thing ever. Better than peace on Earth, really.
Yes, leave it to the Hawkeyes to be the one Big Ten team to represent so far.
what the hell was Conklin doing?
Sparty holding their own but might have needed a TD after that turnover.
#1 QB Stafford and #1 RB Moreno are AWESOME.
Yeah, it's a shame they didn't come away with much after spending the first half in Georgia territory.
that sucked
No doubt in my mind the Buckeyes would have stomped Georgia.
When is Mark Richt taking his place on the hot seat?
And herein lies the problem with rooting for a Hoyer-lead team.
It helps when Georgia can get away with penalties like blocking in the back on punt returns or holding downfield on screens to set themselves up for a second half romp to victory. I guess when a team goes out of their way to penalize themselves during a game like this, the refs assume there's a quota of penalties that a team like Georgia has already met.
im sick of hearing SEC speed in this MSU bulldogm matchup....
and as i wrote that there TE burns everyone...
Michigan St's offensive line is ass-tastic.
Who are the queers or liers about saying they aren't hung over. I feel like, as the great Kris Kristoferson would say, "hammered shit" today.
Does anybody else think that Matthew Stafford looks retarded? Anybody?
They need to put Cousins in. He's good for an 8 of 8 stretch or two.
I'm hurting too.
The refs are basically ignoring everything UGA does.
I knew from the first snaps of the game that Sparty didn't have the horses to win this race... and still they're down just one touchdown...
Georgia doesn't even called for the hold on the 2pt try. Again, I guess when you're Georgia, you have a quota of penalties that can be called against you.
Yep. The back judge was watching Hoyer get smashed.
so basically Georiga doesnt get called for anything?...they DB was holding him right in front of the refs
that should be the ballgame. To be fair to Georgia, they're driving the Big Ten-SEC relationship as much as Ohio State. As much as we're 0-9 against the SEC, they're en route to being 7-0 against the Big Ten.
And now it is time for SC to put the whoopin' on Penn St. Big 10 is just not very good this year.
go penn state? ugh....
I'm not rooting for Penn State. It's high time they realized the gulf between themselves and programs like USC, like we've had to the last couple years.
Sparty blew it. Had that game during the first half, and couldn't put any points up. The same thing came back to bite them that did in Northwestern the other night. Too bad, as those would have been two nice wins for the Big Ten.
OMG, Herbie is gushing over USC and used the word speed 3 times before Penn State gave up the ball on their first series.
I'm so tired of that freaking word and he's overused it for the entire game already.
7.8 ppg!U@U!(U@!JKL!HL?
I'm just going to laugh eternally if USC blows out the nitwits worse than they did us.
Herbie and Mushburger are slobbering over USC as if they haven't lost a game in 5 years.
They always do that. Nits are doing better than I thought already.
Wait wait wait wait...I thought USC was utterly impenetrable on defense.
I really believe we saw an Ohio State team in September that was simply putrid. They didn't get their act together until late in the season, so IMHO, USC was never tested by a Beanie-less and Boeckman-led Buckeye team. Even the D was bad.
Did you hear what Herbie said about the PSU TD? "That wasn't just a TD to tie the score, that was a TD to get PSU to believe they belong on the same field as USC."
It's comments like that which make me wonder if he even remembers playing at OSU. Then again, he never did beat Michigan, so that's maybe what he thought.
At any rate, PSU definitely believes they belong on the same field as USC. They blew out Oregon State and USC got beat by them this year. He's a gibbering idiot tonight.
FYI, I'm using a laptop tray I received for Christmas to comment and watch TV at the same time. MUCH better than using the coffee table.
I don't think Ohio State improved all that much in anything throughout the season. The schedule just got softer.
Where was this PSU D in October?
Hey what's the deal w/ TWC and Viacom - did they work it all out or are they just continuing their last deal right now? I still get Comedy Central and all the rest (even though CC's the only one I watch).
That's it! Herbie was an SEC/Michigan plant!
I'd have to disagree with that assessment. Take a look at the schedule again. If you think teams like Youngstown State, Ohio, Troy, Minnesota, and Wisconsin are tougher than the rest of the schedule, then I don't know what to tell you. USC and PSU cancel each other out IMO, as does Purdue and Michigan.
They made a deal. Viacom was bluffing.
Um...no. More like he's been brainwashed during his tenure at ESPN. He's uttered the word speed almost as much as Fouts did in 2002.
Sarcasm, friend.
Boy, Herbie is giving Carroll a tonguebath. You think he wished he went to SC?
"Sarcasm, friend."
Right back at ya, bro! ;-)
Definitely. Plus he wants to make sure he gets the exclusive interviews and breaking news.
Looks like PSU is doing everything Carroll expected on D.
Sound familiar?
Where is Spread HD hiding?
Thanks for noticing my point! :-)
I really thought the way NU and Iowa played was a good omen for today. So far, I would have to say that was way off.
Difference between B10 teams and USC, Florida, Oklahoma et al.? Willingness to use innovation in high-risk, high-reward situations, like the Rose Bowl, or the national title, or whatever.
pogue, did you have a fun New Year's Eve?
Yeah, I agree with that. No question about it, the B10 plays much closer to the vest.
Yes, but not enough to get any sort of a hangover. Which is okay, I guess, but States Michigan and Penn are trying their hardest to give me a headache anyway.
I'm not sure why, either. I've heard the term "saving plays" applied to every Big 10 coach, but what are they saving them for? Is it possible their minds are totally devoid of offensive innovation and the bullplop we get is the best they can come up with?
LOL! I don't know, bro.
TD USC. Boy, this looks awfully familiar.
Who let Jim Heacock coach this defense? They're always 2 seconds late.
No wonder Petey wants a playoff so bad. He'd probably have five national championships by now.
Florida is good. Oklahoma is good. But USC is the best team in college football. Every year.
Yup. Looks like you're going to get your wish.
Hmm... USC carving up a Big Ten defense that is stubborn on using a passive zone coverage...
Now where have I seen that...
Probably accurate. Even when they give up a huge play, they get a fumble recovery.
Jason,
Oregon State, Stanford, and UCLA would beg to differ
The more I think about it, the more I think it's just too tough to play man against USC's freaks on the outside. What they've proven is that they'll carve your zone up as well, so you might as well man-up and give it a shot.
OMG USC BEST TEAM 4EVER. PLEASE FIND MUTE BUTTON.
The byproduct of Pete's high-energy system is that it looks like for one sleeper game each year it won't be on. That's just how they're going to be. They'll lose that one game each year, but that doesn't mean they're still not the best team in the country each year.
The only way to beat USC is to pound it up the middle, easier said than done.
Unless you have a QB with a strong enough arm to make the outside throw, and Clark doesn't have that arm.
I'm getting my wish, sure, but Jesus, these guys are in Columbus in 8 months. Also, 31-7.
is there that big of a gap between USC and big ten football?...
game over
Exactly. USC receivers are running far too loose against Penn State's defense for this current scheme to stand. Jam, bump, do something...
...and just as I type it, the Lions just give up another one.
Apparently
That's what makes USC so super-awesome and the greatest bestest football team of all time forever. They're so good that they don't need to win every game.
It really helps when you play your bowl game an hour from home every year, you cant say the result would be the same if they were in Pittsburgh.
USC for National Champs.
It certainly makes it easier on them staying in their own beds the night before playing in their own backyard, but this school could really have 4 or 5 championships this decade if there were a playoff system.
Pete has one big game loss and it was to Vince.
Have you watched this game? It's not like it's been back and forth since the start of the 2nd quarter. This is a blowout in Happy Valley.
I'll be satisfied if we hold these guys under 30 in Columbus next September. The defensive losses for the Trojans might help keep the game competitive, though.
Is it bad that I'm enjoying this beatdown?
I just have to believe if you had equally important bowl games in warm and cold weather results would be alot less one sided.
Some of those kids in Florida have never seen snow in person, put them in Ann Arbor in January and see how fast they are.
Hell it happens in the NFL all the time, look at the Cardinals two weeks ago.
You never see it in collesge because special crossover games are early in the season when its warm in the north, and bowl games in warm climates.
Over on BSD, they're blaming the refs. For a 24-point deficit.
i love Big Ten football...but this is just gross...
Yeah, it gets pretty awesome:
http://www.blackshoediaries.co...
Theres no doubt USC should be in the MNC game this year.
Did wal-mart have an after xmas sale on blue and white facial paint in PA? I've seen about 78 psu fans looking like some kind of mutant clown/mime in the stands. U$C is the best team in the country. Pac 10 was underrated this year.
I agree with that and would love to see some of these teams play on a cold weather field this time of year. But I don't know if that's worth 24 points.
someone has to be blamed right?
Oregon State
I'd be placing blame of Galen Hall. And Tom Bradley for getting absolutely smashed last night, calling in sick, and recommending Heacock take his place.
haha but isnt zone blizting the only way to win...
Dude, if the titties and beer are flowin at the Texas parties, just imagine the SC throwdowns!!!!!
Who wouldn't want to play there??!!
Not at the same time, you ignorant fool. Ya gotta call obvious blitz, then the soft zone with holes gaping slightly bigger than a USC song girl's vagina! That's the way to WIN THE BALL GAMES, AARON!
I second that.
Local Cbus Media are going bonkers over Beanie saying he isn't sure about leaving. Please. VY promised he'd be back too.
What Poe said, that is.
Hilarious. And it's just a small taste of what OSU fans went through for the last 2 seasons.
No doubt. He's going to be a first rounder. He'll be able to buy bling for his bling. To dress up his bling.
I'd change that to the most talented team, not necessarily the best (as they should utilize all of that talent for the entire schedule). But the point remains the same...
im sorry jim...i bow to your greatness...
Couldn't agree more!
HOO DOGGY THIS ZONE IS WORKING OUT AWESOME FOR THE NITS, I'M SHITTING MYSELF WITH GLEE
You know, it's really a miracle OSU "held" USC to 35 with the personnel they had in the game. PSU started the game at full strength and had already given up 31 by halftime.
FUCKING HELL, I DON'T WANNA CLIMAX TOO EARLY JOE
Sign me up! *Looking around for my wife...breathing a sigh of relief.*
TAKE IT SOMEWHAT EASY ON ME, ANOTHER LONG 3RD DOWN CONVERSION ON A PASS BETWEEN THE SAFETIES, LINED UP OUTSIDE THE HASHES FOR SOME REASON, AND I'M GONNA POP, JOE
WHAT IS THIS BLITZING FAGGOT SHIT
See if you have enough patience, the zone defense works. TFL.
/sarc
HAHA TWO DEEP SAFETIES ON FOURTH AND ONE, THAT'LL STOP 'EM
I CAN'T TAKE MANY MORE OF THESE COMMIE "TURNOVERS" JOE
Jesus, a reasonably good throw from Clark.
Followed by a clunker or two.
When is Herbie divorcing his wife and going for a man-orgy with USC?
Maybe Herbie prepped for this game by reading Boi from Troy.
I know Herbstreit is giving USC its just dues for a great performance in this game so far. At times, it seems like an excessive slobbering and glorification overkill.
But when Herbstreit just spent a few seconds praising Taylor Mays for his body and how good he looks, it seems a bit much... and enough to hit the mute button...
Herbie would father petey's child.
PSU's D-line is non-existant today.
Well, this one's over. I'm hoping Cincy gets smacked tonight, they're getting rather uppity.
There is no way that's a fumble.
I have not seen many USC tackles today that aren't at the very least shady, let alone dirty.
This game is a little more interesting now. At the moment, anyway. They're still down 3 scores, though.
Pick 6.
LOL! And just like that, this game became horribly boring again. How can these guys let that guy behind them like that.
SoCal can score at will. They answer everything!
Give PSU credit, their offense is still competing. More than we can say, on either side of the ball.
How about Herbie quiping if the B10 gets points for going O'fer in bowls before realizing Iowa won. He is really becoming a giant douche bag!!!!!!!!
LOL! OK. I think I've finally recovering from laughing at Penn State for kicking that FG.
Herbie is running out of body parts on Carroll to bathe with his tongue.
I can't believe that hideous play actually worked.
And saliva.
Oh God. Again with the speed crap. Herbie, you're brainwashed. ESPN has removed your critical thinking skills.
Just think if PSU could've kept USC out of the end zone last time out. This would be getting very interesting right now. Then again...USC wouldn't be running that D.
Onside kick?
Nope.
If the Texas DB would've focused on making the tackle instead of knocking the ball away on that Crabtree catch...hmmm...
Game. Over.
SoCal's linebacker blitzes were big today. Would love to see some of that on Monday.
I've suddenly become very worried about having to endure watching another beatdown on Monday night. Better stock up on the booze.
Does every B10(11) O-line play with concrete cleats on?
Will they get beat by 14 or 7?
How on earth did they get a delay of game penalty there? Gah.
ESPN: Speed, speed, speed, USC speed, speed, speed, speed, speed, SEC speed, speed, speed.
According to ESPN, every team except the B10(11) has speed.
You don't think anyone can beat the Trojans, Pete?
Pete has a selective memory, Jacquizz.
I forgot. Speed fits in there somewhere.
Has anyone switched to the Cinncy VT game? And any comments on Beannie going or staying?
Yeah, I switched over. And if Beanie is projected to go 1st round and stays anyway, I'd be shocked.
Just a hunch but, I think he's gonna stay put. He's saying he wants to be recognized as the best Buckeye ever and he needs another year to enter into that conversation.
how will the big ten ever get the speed...maybe we should call the sec and ask for there secert...
He'll never be the best Buckeye ever. Archie has that one locked up until someone from OSU wins 3 Heismans. I'd love to see him stay, but there have been a lot of former players who said they'd stay and ended up leaving before their senior year. Antonio Pittman is one player whose situation was very similar.
I guess we'll eventually find out what he'll do.
The B10(11) will never be recognized as "having speed" unless ESPN somehow disappears off the face of the planet.
Speed difference is mostly on the D-line. SEC teams always seem to be a little faster there.
This UC game is awful. I will never make it to the end.
Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer on the same screen is beyond nauseating. Even Eddie George cannot cancel out the horrific stench given off by Plastic hair and Bozo the Switzer
Iowa disagrees. :-)
He doesn't have to kiss the big ten's ass.... I'm a HUGE OSU fan.... but come on... the big ten isn't very good overall. It's just a fact.
Agreed; although I don't think Archie's importance to Ohio State can be measured in Heismans alone; his loyalty, his service to the university, but most of all his constant classy nature, in his role as an ambassador of the program. If we lump coaches into the discussion of the greatest Buckeye ever, I still think Woody means the most to the program; but Archie remains a very, very close second.
Seriously, I thought IOWA would propel the B10 to 3 wins today and 1 Monday...what a joke. It is highly likely we as a conference will end up 1-6, unless we pull of a miracle. Jim Delaney needs to take a long hard look at how he can make us relevant as a conference, because this is laughingstock territory now. I hope fellow B10 fans will STFU and stop blaming OSU alone for the conference's image.
Hey Cincy. Welcome to the big leagues. Heh.
And then there was one.
Ohio State will beat Texas.
The power of positive thinking.
Ohio State will beat Texas.
The Big 10 revival starts January 5th, 2009.
We think we can, we think we can, we think we can...
So it begins, and it's uglier than ever: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/f...
hold the pony...you mean that kids from the north CAN be as fast as kids from the sec area....and souther cal?...only...according to ESPN...
that made me sick, like i want to find this josh peters and beat him with an Ohio State helmet
Okay, but make it quick. The guy needs to resume his offseason job of USC team fluffer in a few weeks.
Dude, we've (Big 10) only won 1 game so far this bowl season, and maybe you didn't watch the Wisconsin, Michigan State, or Penn State games, but we're getting annihilated unlike any other BCS conference. It has nothing to do with ESPN. These guys are going out there and playing like a bunch of girls, and I expect our Bucks to follow suit if history is any indicator. No Big Ten team brings a legit pass rush in big games, the coaches don't make adjustments, and it looks like they stand around clueless as to why it's happening to them. It's embarrassing.
I hope this year is the end of this stretch for the Big Ten and the Buckeyes, but it's so bad that I'm in the market for a new hobby. The only Big Ten team that has won their bowl game was a team that Ohio State didn't play - not good.
No matter how hard I try to brace myself for Monday's sure loss, I know I'm going to feel super lousy when it actually happens. This shizz isn't healthy.
haha...so what according to this guy i'll refer to as josh "the douche" peters...the Big 10 as a whole should be dropped to a D-II conference and never be aloud to compete against the "elite" anymore?
The night is always darkest before the dawn.
I BELIEVE IN HARVEY DENT
No, srsly: the only way the Big Ten will get out of its current rut is to trim the fat: get rid of terrible coaches like Ron Zook and whoever the hell is at Indiana. Alvarez needs to issue an ultimatum ("stop stucking, meathead") to Bielema. I think RRod will turn UM around, it'll just take time. If he doesn't produce a bowl team in the next two years, can him. Joe Paterno needs to retire. Tim Brewster needs to produce something tangible to build a program around. The difference between the SEC and Big Ten is not athletes, it's not speed, it's not arbitrary star ratings handed out by 40-year old pederasts judging a 17-year-old kid's "hip swivel". It's coaching, scheming, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to win. The Big Ten is severely deficient in all three.
I don't want to hear anyone bitching about "academic standards", and coaches who make players into "men", or pretending that we are somehow "better" morally than other conferences because of the way we treat our coaches and ADs. Get off your high horse, because all it's getting you is routine blowouts against anyone OOC with a pulse.
Rivals Fuckmook (what I'm calling him) is trying to piss of massive Big Ten fanbases so more people read his columns so he can consider himself relevant. That is all.
i guess the pac-10 is so much better...did anyone see oregon st's dominate and clear win over pitt???...it was quite the nail-biter
Alright, that was typed in a bit of a hurry. I'm not advocating cut-throat politicking as is done in the SEC, where the greatest coaches of all time at some schools are routinely fired for one losing season. I'm advocating the hiring of candidates for HC jobs that are more than "good enough", as in good enough to get the team to a bowl game, regardless of how that game turns out.
well douche tool peters can get screwed cos theres no team like THE Ohio State...
Pogue, man, I love ya. Seriously, your passion is unparalleled. But give me a break. We lost to 2 D1-AA teams last season. We've been blown out in all our BCS bowls for the last 3 years. The Big Ten has the worst bowl record this decade of all the BCS conferences, I believe.
The Big Ten has been derailing steadily. If you want to blame it on coaches, fine, blame it on coaches. Joe Pa needs to retire? Didn't Bowden just blow Wisconsin's tires out? It's getting disgusting.
I put up with the SEC-fans' nonsense for the last 3 years. I've put up with the analysts B.S. for the last 3 years. I've continually chalked it up to "What the F do they know?" But they're right. Everyone was predicting a 1 or 2 win bowl season for the Big Ten. We all thought it was crazy. Well, turns out we're the ones who are batshit. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me for 3 straight fucking years, and it's time to admit that this conference is a flippin' joke right now. They do schedule awful teams in the nonconference games. They aren't competing on national stages against complete teams. And they're doing so in embarrassing fashion.
Whatever they're doing on the gridirons in Big Ten country is simply not what other teams are doing in other parts. It doesn't even f'ing matter what Ohio State does against Texas - after what Penn State did, and what Ohio State and Michigan have done in the last 3 years, the damage is not repairable in one 60 minute showing.
Something is seriously wrong.
Texas is going to kill us on Monday. If we were amazed at how fast USC moved the ball on Penn State (and us in September), we ain't seen nothing yet. McCoy is licking his chops for our zone defense and weak pass rush. I don't even want to watch, it's like self-torture.
Gee, I wonder if PSU fans will be singing a different tune now that they got stomped by USC? To all you PSU fans. Welcome to the club. How does it feel? Oh, and I didnt want to admit this and I questioned their D because of who they played or, didnt play for that matter. But, USC is the best team in the country hands down. One other thing. I have not seen PSU play that sloppy all year. I think the illegal motion call was a bit of a BS call that called back the 46 yarder they had. But, the PSU O coordinator must be stupid. Two instances where they had 3 and short in the first half and each time they tried to run it up the gut. It failed both times. You would think with have Clark back there after the first failed attempt he would have called play action and either have Clark dump it to a tight end or run it himself. The entire USC defense was on the LOS. It could have worked. Also, why not dump it off to the tight end more? When they did they actually gained good yardage. I can recall 3 instances when they did and it gained them 10 plus yards. Bad coaching. Also, what as with the DB's giving their receivers a 10 yard gap? Especially on 2nd and short. Stupid play calling and quite frankly PSU was scared to get there ass kicked and it happened anyway.
I don't even understand why some of you actually thought the B10 would have more than 1 or 2 bowl wins this year. Looking at the matchups, Iowa was the only gimme. NU was a nice surprise, but they had the game and shit the bed. I'd still kind of look at that as a moral victory, considering everyone anticipated them getting blown out of the water. Georgia practically laid down spread eagle for Michigan State the entire first half, and Sparty didn't know what to do with it, walking away with a measley 2 FGs. Penn State... well I'm glad they lost. I do admire though the way they didn't fold like every other B10 team would have.
We have no identity! It seems like the problem with the Big Ten these days is that we want to try to play the game like SEC or Pac Ten Schools. We try to mimic their offenses, spread it out and try to execute it with less talented skill players. Look at Iowa yesterday...They ran the football with success and didn't do anything fancy. Granted SC is not a great football team, however, Iowa played Big Ten football. We need to get back to what we do best...play strong defense and attack speed by running it right at them. You would have thought Penn St. would have learned a lessen and not been in Cover 3 all night. Their corners were lined up 7 yards off the line of scrimmage. I am tired of watching this crap. If the Buckeyes come out and play a loose cover on D and play "Pistol" offense I am going to puke. Run out of the "I" and shove Beanie down their throats and mix in the pass every now and then.
And now it is Jim Delaney's fault for USC not making it to the Nat'l Title Game. Give me a break. I hate all this shit about these 1-loss teams saying they would beat whomever. It is pretty fuckin simple. WIN ALL YOUR GAMES. USC, STFU, you lost to Oregon St. If you would take care of business, you wouldn't have to whine about crushing FLA or OK. They lose a shitty game EVERY YEAR. That Stanford loss was a bigger upset than App St over scUM. Florida lost to Ole Miss. WTF?!?! I will never accept Urban Meyer as an Ohioan. Dude just gives me the willies. Seems sooo slimey. Texas has a legitimate beef to be in the picture, they beat OK soundly on a neutral field. They lost to highly ranked TTech team on a last second play.
Forgot to mention...USC is flat out loaded. You have to wonder how they are attracting all of these stud athletes...they look like gladiators too. I couldn't help but think while I was watching the game that Penn St. is a very good college football team and USC would probably be a NFL playoff team. The Reggie Bush thing was never followed up on and you just have to wonder if there is more there.
Anyone else think Anthony Scrotum may have been staying at Reggie Bush's house in LA? Dude just flat out got his assed handed to him at least 3 times. I've hated that kid forever, and was glad he got taked to the woodshed. I wanted PSU to win that game though, just from a conference standpoint.
So why does USC get all the credit for beating Big Ten teams, but when Ohio State does it, the conference is overrated.
Didn't Todd Boeckman CARVE up this Penn State team last year? OSU won 38-17.
Because USC is the best team in the history of the universe. Duh.
why doesnt the ACC get the heat that the Big 10 does? Boston College lost to vandy...clemson lost to nebraska gerogia tech got curbed stompped....nc state went down to rutgers..miami to cal...i dont here anyone saying the acc is overrated.
Anybody ever stop to think about why, of Petey's 9 losses since 2002, 7 have been outside the Rose Bowl/Coliseum? 2 home losses (by 1 point last year and by 3 to a superior Vince Young-led team in 2005, still in the Rose Bowl) and 7 away, albeit by a combined 32 points. Officiating - home cooking, a la the many dirty hits that were allowed yesterday among other calls/non-calls - is certainly a part of it, but part of me has a sneaking hunch there's more to it. Being wired in to the opponent's headsets, maybe, or having lots of "friendlies" stealing signals, perhaps? Didja notice how on what would've been a PSU scoring play from about 10 out late in the game (but not late enough yet for it to have been completely out of reach - turned into a pick on the next play), Petey's screaming on the sideline for a late time time out that nullified the play? Just saying.
I think OSU needs to be a little craftier about play signalling, intel, and counterintel in the Shoe this fall. Replay above for our last 2 NC whuppin's...
I never said that the B10 is in a situation that can be fixed with Ohio State beating Texas. It's beyond that now. The hate for the Big Ten is beyond fuckin' Thunderdome, and it's mostly our fault. It's going to take a steady, consistent effort. Beating Texas would be a nice start, but not even 1/20th of the battle.
Because everyone knows the ACC is bad. Really bad. B10 is supposed to be one of the powerhouse conferences. Also it doesn't help that the bowl matchups across the board (except for Iowa) made the Big10 10+ pt underdogs.
USC recruits itself. It's in So-Cal, beautiful women everywhere, glamorous as hell. They've got Will Ferrell fucking around during practice and Snoop Dogg giving pep talks, and Pete Carroll is a rock star. Ray Small is an idiot, but there is a shred of truth in his talk about USC as a football factory. High school players can't go pro right away. USC is the closest thing to a professional team in college football, the next best option. Before that that team was UMiami, before that it was Florida State. You don't see Tyler Whaleys and other role type players on USC squads, guys looking to play some football, get an education, have a solid experience. Guys that know they have almost no shot at the NFL. Everyone at USC is an athlete, and the 2 deep could start at almost any school. Many of them have a shot at the NFL.
I don't really think PC is doing anything illegal, leastaways not anything more than most coaches. He's charismatic and his program is laid back; there isn't an emphasis on developing men or getting an education. It's about competing and being the best football player you can be. Maybe that blows up in his face; maybe there is more to the Bush thing than meets the eye; but for now, USC is living a charmed existence. Nothing last forever, though.
