Blogpoll: Week 13

Well, we guess Texas Tech isn't quite as good on the road as they are at home. That, or Oklahoma is peaking at the right time.

Even with Oklahoma's decisive victory, we kept them behind Florida and USC simply because we think those two teams would beat the Sooners on a neutral field. We're not so sure Texas would beat Oklahoma if they played today but since Texas won the head to head, we kept them in front of Stoops' troops.

With Tech getting spanked, we moved them to the back of the one-loss pack but we wonder aloud how Ohio State would be treated if they were in the same scenario.

With a lot of teams on bye weeks, there wasn't a ton of movement in the upper half of this week's rough draft ballot.

Anyway, you know the drill. Let us know what you think especially with regard to the top 7.

1 Alabama Bye week. Next up: Auburn UP1
2 Florida The Gators turned 705 yards of offense into a 70-19 win over the Citadel. Tebow threw for 201 and 3 TD while Chris Rainey (142) and Emmanuel Moody (116) both went over the century mark. Harvin also scored a TD for the 13th straight game. Next up: @ Florida State. UP1
3 Southern Cal Bye week. Next up: Notre Dame UP1
4 Texas Bye week. Next up: Texas A&M. UP1
5 Oklahoma The Sooners destroyed Texas Tech 65-21 behind 4 TD passes from Sam Bradford and 5 rushing TD's between DeMarco Murray (18/125, 2 TD) and Chris Brown (21/108, 3 TD). Oklahoma's defense held Tech to 1/13 on 3rd down and forced 3 turnovers. Next up: Oklahoma State. UP1
6 Penn State Penn State secured a Big Ten championship and a trip to Pasadena with a 49-18 destruction of Sparty. Daryll Clark put up a career high 341 yards passing and 4 TD and the Nittany Lion defense held Ringer to 42 yards on 17 carries. When it was over, Joe Pa made it clear he has no plans to retire. UP1
7 Texas Tech Texas Tech's defense was exposed big time giving up 625 yards of offense and 32 first downs in a 65-21 thrashing at the hands of the Sooners. Michael Crabtree's streak of 13 games with a TD catch also bit the dust as Tech was held to a season low 21 points. Next up: Baylor. DOWN6
8 Boise State Boise State clinched the WAC title with a 41-34 win over Nevada. Kellen Lewis led the Broncos with 414 yards passing and 3 TD. Next up: Fresno State. --
9 Utah The Utes broke open a 17-14 game with three 4th Qtr TD's to run away from BYU 48-24 to capture the MWC crown. Brian Johnson led the way with 303 yards passing and 4 TD while the D caused 6 BYU turnovers, 5 in the second half. --
10 Ohio State The Buckeyes made it five straight over Michigan with a 42-7 dismantling in the 'Shoe. Beanie ran for 134 and a score while Boom added 80 yards and 2 TD. Defensively, OSU held Michigan to 198 total yards, 11 first downs and 1/17 on third down. --
11 Oklahoma State Bye week. Next up: @ Oklahoma. --
12 Missouri Bye week. Next up: Kansas --
13 Georgia Bye week. Next up: Georgia Tech --
14 Ball State Ball State needed two 4th Qtr touchdowns to escape with a 31-24 road win over Central Michigan. MiQuale Lewis ran for 177 yards, eclipsing the century mark for the 9th time this season. QB Nate Davis also had a big day with 4 TD passes. UP1
15 TCU The Horned Frog defense held Air Force to 161 total yards in TCU's 44-10 victory. TCU was won at least 10 games in 5 of past 7 seasons. UP2
16 Cincinnati The Bearcats beat Pitt for the first time ever, 28-21, meaning they'll win the Big East if they can get past Syracuse next week. Tony Pike led UC with 309 yards passing and 3 TD. At 9-2, Cincy has now won 9 games in back to back seasons for the first time in school history. UP4
17 Oregon State Playing without starting QB Lyle Moevao then losing RB Jacquizz Rodgers to injury early on, Oregon State drove 73 yards in the final minute to pull off a 19-17 win at Arizona. The win keeps Oregon State's Rose Bowl hopes alive - they need to get past Oregon next week to lock up a bid. UP4
18 Oregon Bye week. Next up: @ Oregon State. UP4
19 Brigham Young Max Hall was intercepted 5 times ending any chances of an upset as BYU fell at Utah 48-24. The Cougars cut the lead to 27-24 midway through the 3rd Qtr but ended the game with 5 straight turnovers - 1 fumble and 4 INT. DOWN5
20 Michigan State Dantonio's crew found themselves in a 28-0 hole near halftime and couldn't recover in a 49-18 loss at Penn State. Javon Ringer managed just 42 yards on the ground and Brian Hoyer didn't fare much better completing 25/40 for 206 and 2 INT. 3rd down conversions: PSU 13/17, MSU 3/12. Rushing yards: PSU 138, MSU 35. DOWN4
21 Mississippi Ole Miss won their 4th straight beating LSU 31-13 in Baton Rouge. The Rebels have now beat ranked foes Florida and LSU on the road with a narrow 24-20 loss at Alabama in mid October. Next up: Mississippi State. NR
22 Northwestern Northwestern reached the 9 win plateau (9-3) for the 5th time in school history thanks to a 27-10 win over Juice and the Illini. NR
23 Boston College Boston College stayed in the ACC title hunt with a 24-21 win over Wake Forest. The Eagles marched 70 yards for the winning score with 1:12 left. Next up: Maryland. NR
24 Georgia Tech The Yellow Jackets ran all over the Hurricanes racking up 472 rushing yards in a 41-23 victory. Tech has beaten Miami four straight times. NR
25 Florida State The Seminoles moved to 8-3 with a 37-3 whupping of Maryland. Next up: Florida NR

DROPPED OUT: LSU (#18), Pittsburgh (#19), Maryland (#23), North Carolina (#24), Miami (Florida) (#25).

If you decide to use the logic "who would win on a neutral field", do you really want Utah at #9 and OSU at #10?

OSU would prob beat Utah and/or Boise State head to head, but the national perception hangover has us stuck at 10......... not much of a problem with that and not much problem with whatever bowl game we go to. Mission #1 is to win it at all costs... period!!!! That will go along way to improve national perception and gain momentum for next season.

Where are the Michigan smack talkers this morning.... oh "Truth", "Blue Man", "Go Blue" where are you???? Let's debate why you got your asses kicked.... or do you just want to talk smack a few days before the big game and then run and hide under like cowards??

Jim...Excellent point. I don't think Utah or Boise could hang with OSU. By the neutral field comment, I should have been more specific to say we try to apply that logic to all the 1 loss teams to rank them, then the 2 loss teams. Utah and Boise are anomalies that are just stuck in the middle. Of course, outside of the top 5 or 6 (true unbeatens plus the 1 loss teams), I dont think it really matters since those teams have zero shot at the title and/or are undeserving of a shot at the title.

A fun thing I just noticed.. assuming that USC gets a BCS bid, the last time the Buckeyes lost to a team that did not eventually play in a BCS bowl was November 13, 2004, against Purdue. For over 4 years now the Buckeyes have beat all lesser contenders, and quite a few of the greater ones too...

yes... our losses in the past few years

Texas (National Champ)
Penn State (finished in the top 5 x 2)
Florida (National champ)
LSU (National Champ)
Illinois... an anomoly... bad calls, bad game for Boeckman, but they went to a Rose Bowl....

USC loses to a bad team every year .......

i personally think iowa should be ranked, who knows what happened during that three game stretch where they decided to just lose whenever possible, but the shonn greene show is in full effect and i don't think anybody is going to look forward to playing them in a bowl game

With BYU struggling with a lesser team and OSU rolling, I think we should move above them. Also, not to play "comparative scores" too much, but Utah barely survived UM early, while we demolished UM late....and learning a new offense generally improves over the season.

The WAC and MWC, I don't care what their records against the Pac 10 say, are not deserving of the amount of respect that they're getting this year. They should be ranked down with Ball State- ahead of Ball St., but down with them.

Iowa is a lot better than their record. It took them a while to get in rhythm but they're definitely there now. Unfortunately the fact remains they are a 4-loss team, and that can't be ignored. Here's hoping Greene leaves for the NFL so we don't have to face him next year. I think they're one of our last games, and we know they love to play spoiler.

I hope not....I would really love to take Georgia to the woodshed in the Cap One Bowl if we get left out in the BCS cold....we match up FANTASTIC against Georgia...and with them being a preseason favorite, an SEC team, and overall winning program, beating them would do wonders for our team

I don't necessarily disagree about OSU being above the Utah/Boise's of the world. I think we're just overly cautious about getting the homer tag. As for Iowa, we almost put them in there but complete indifference to all those mediocre teams slotted from about 17 on limited meaningful research. I think we can send our wednesday ballot with Iowa in there somewhere.

Hey Ski,
I agree with you about wanting to see our seniors going out with a bang agaisnt an SEC school. They could add one more first. I think with the win that would either tie them or put them first with the most wins. But, being the first group of seniors to beat an SEC opponent would help our perception in college football a lot more then whoopin on an ACC school in the BCS. The one thing that keeps my hopes up about a BCS bid is that our fan base travels so well and we will sell all the tickets we would get and you know the head people of the BCS know this and may give us the benefit of the doubt. But, I still say we end up in the Cap one bowl. Nothing wrong with that though.

Hate to say, but Oregon St. is gonna beat Oregon. This time I think they whoop Penn ST also. Utah is good, but boring and their "signature win" is against that huge bunch of crap we played Saturday. Auto Bids should be done away with.

I haven't seen Oregon play at all this year--can anyone tell me why most of the experts seem to think that Oregon State victory is mostly a foregone conclusion? Is home field that big of an advantage in their rivalry? The two teams seem to be ranked closely, and Oregon should be capable of putting up big offensive numbers. Now, defense-wise, who knows with the ducks.

Sorry but if you lose by 44 points to ANYBODY, ANYWHERE, you are not a top 10 team. Tech should be 11 or lower after that defeat. the score was lower than it could have been had Okie punched it in from the 1 on 4th and 1 and then played any D in the last 2 mins. The score could have been 72-14,,,that's how bad it really was. Tech has no business being in the top 10. we lost by 32 to USC who was ranked higher than us and fell 9 spots from 5 to 14, they lose by 44 to OK who was ranked lower than them and only fall by 5 spots,,,what a joke.

A few comments:
I would put OSU over Utah & Boise (#8). Mid-majors in general are just "eh".
You definitely need to have Utah ahead of Boise though- why is BSU ahead of Utah now? Utah beat TCU, Oregan State, Michigan, BYU...that's better than Boise St has.

Also - I can't see how USC should be ahead of Oklahoma/Texas. Texas is ONE PLAY away from the #1 overall spot, and both Big 12 teams have a much tougher scheduled than USC. Oklahoma's non-con includes TCU and Cincinnati, and in-conference the Big 12 blows away Pac-10.
My top 10:
'Bama, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Penn State, Texas Tech, OSU, Utah, Oklahoma State.
