.........and Weiss has proven himself to be an incompetent, overindulgent, bragger who has done nothing to improve the Notre Dame Football program. Spygate was certainly a reason that Cheeseburger Charlie did well as a coordinator and I am sure we will never know the entire scope of that affair. Weis is nothing but an empty suit (one of the few D1 coaches to never play football) and the ND universe was duped into hiring him.

i've also heard about fickell that he's been pleading with heacock to get more aggressive on defense. aj hawk, the man himself, said that fickell raised his game, which is about the highest praise you can get.

On Fickell, remember: his defensive coordinators in college were Bill Young (currently at Miami, in the mold of showing both linebackers in the A-gap before dropping zero, one or two off into coverage to keep the offense guessing) and Fred Pagac Sr. He again interned under Pagac as a grad assistant (I think John Tenuta was a supervisor to him as well), and, as an assistant coach, worked under Mark Dantonio.

Further, the consensus on the defense is that he's the scariest dude on the staff.

I absolutely love Heacock as DC. He has amazing instincts and always plays aggressive with his personnel. He is the epitome of go-for-broke defensive philosophy. In fact, I know first hand that he's never even heard of zone pass coverage. He possesses the greatest college football defensive mind in the history of the sport.

Also, he's cool with me pounding his daughter like it's going out of style. That gets him points, too.

Isn't Fickell like Heacock's padawan learner or something? I think you'd only like Fickell as HC if you like Heacock as DC. Anybody?

Hmm, Meyer to Notre Dame? It'd be great for Notre Dame if that happened, but mostly because Urban Meyer burning them in 2005 is haunting them to this day. It'd be some kind of weird closure.

Still, I can't imagine there's any benefit to Notre Dame over the University of Florida at the moment. Sure, someone will bring up that, at Notre Dame, you can schedule much more creatively (for better or worse) than you can at the helm of any conference team, but the SEC schools still find creative ways to pad schedules.

Further, the recruiting nationally thing nowadays basically means that Notre Dame would die as a program if it recruited its own home state exclusively. With the way we discuss fuel shortages, fiscal crises and so on, that might be a hindrance down the road. Moreover, this isn't the 1960s and 70s anymore, where prep school superstars aspired to play at Notre Dame. That sentiment is mostly gone and it's never coming back. Sure, Notre Dame, unlike the University of Florida, has the benefit of instant name recognition (like a University of Michigan, sadly) and being an instant attention-getter on the recruiting trail. Yet, I think whatever benefits of jetting out to California, Texas or wherever else these 5-stars grow from and having the Notre Dame name in tow for Meyer can be offset by recruiting the hell out of Florida, Alabama and Georgia and being a regional attention-getter. There might be less glory in the latter route, but when all is said and done, it's probably easier. Further, Florida is one of the wealthiest athletic departments in the country, so I'm not convinced Notre Dame's resources, while ample, could be that enticing.

Of course, if The Urban Meyer "really, really, really" wants the Notre Dame job (per the article) because it has that much mystique to him, and the only reason he turned down the offer earlier was in consideration of his young'ns, then it says a lot about a man who makes formal inquiries into ACT scores of recruits that he doesn't get and who also speaks of himself in the third person. He'd thrive at Notre Dame and the Domers would fall in love with him. In a weird way, I hope it happens. Still, I think there's all sorts of incentives to keep The Urban in Gainesville.

btw, Urban, way to support the place where you got your masters by referring to Michigan as a dream job. Dick. Does Earle Bruce know you feel that way about Michigan?
