Tressel Lists Beanie as Probable for Gophers

We'll have our usual presser recap out tomorrow morning but wanted to pass along that Tressel just said Beanie is probable for Saturday against Minnesota.

I'm not sure I think that's a good idea but I guess it's hard to really say without knowing what the injury is and what damage could be done leading him to possibly miss the bigger game at Wisconsin.

What do you think? Would you sit him one more week or do you think OSU needs Beanie this week to get past Tight End Tim's Gophers?

the name of this show is Tressel Knows Best... I HOPE. I have a friend who works at OSU hospital -- he spoke to an orthopaedic doc who treated Beanie and it was said that he could have gone against USC , but he could have aggrivated the injury (ligament pull--very painful). I think keeping him out last week was a good idea, and I think JT wants to gauge Beanie's readiness for the big one in Madison next Sat Nite.... I'll bet that Beanie gets 10-12 carries in the first half and will sit for the 2nd half if the score permits....

Go Bucks

Ditto Mitch's comment. Seems spot on. Wells get some early carries, just to knock off the rust, and rests himself for Bucky.

OSU, 35-24. Gophers fans are insufferable. Four wins over the Sisters of Charity, and you'd think they were BCS-bound. Idiots.

I think he is ready to go. Tressel has been consistent about sitting players until they are fully healthy.

I think we may see Wells carry the ball at least 15 times this week.

How awesome will it be to see Beanie and Pryor in the backfield? I have to think, assuming he does play, that is a major shot in the arm for the confidence and energy of the team.

Beanie gets 10 carries in the 1st half and is not needed in the 2nd of a 45-10 blowout.

For Beanie's sake, I really do not want to see him on the field until he is 100%. Yes he put up big numbers last year injured, but he has a pro career ahead of him, and this clearly isn't OSU's year to win it all so I wouldn't risk it. Kudos to Tressel for protecting him even though he wanted to play the USC game.

Kyle-- How about Pryor, Beanine, Herron, and Saine all in the same formation..... ala the Dolphins against the Patriots this weekend... OSU has the talent to run those formations (pistol) and the snaps could go to others (remember the Shot Ginn vs Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl).

I am beginning to think that part of the reasoning in holding Beanie out of the USC game was to create a burst of energy upon his return for the Big-10 games. I am also thinking (sadly) that maybe Tressel did not place as huge an empahasis on the USC game as he does on winning the conference. There are definitely merits to that line of thinking and some drawbacks as well. It also helps a team (see 2002) to be ranked out of the top-10 to cut down on the head swelling and to get the target off your back. Some BIG-10 teams may take us a little lightly after that stinker vs USC and that may work to our advantage..... surprise!

Also, Boom has done a spendid job filling in for Beanie. He doesn't provide the same take-it-to-the-house threat (not yet at least) but he is a warrior and will fight for every inch.

I agree totally with ya Mitch. Just having 28 in the backfield will force Minnesota to fill the box with 8 defenders. Ooooops, did somebody forget that TP has a cannon for a right arm ala Megaman?

Mitch, if you have ever coached, or knew any coach somewhat closely, you'll know that not a single one had tanked a game. You only play 12 a year and each 12 are of the utmost importance, especially in college with no playoffs. Nothing is guaranteed and every single game matters. You can't afford to 'not place as huge an empahasis on the USC game'. Every game should have a huge empahsis on it. It is why I love CFB and don't want to see a playoff. It takes away from each reg. season game. Would we be flipping out about USC if we had a playoff? I don't think so, not nearly as much anyway; we'd still have the playoff to look forward to.

Can I change my vote in the poll to This weekend?

Scott... I have only coached at the Elementary school level (my kids).... I am not saying that Tressel tanked any game (far from it), but coaches do put emphasis on certain things and certain games. Tress is certainly aware that losing to USC does not have any bearing on the Big-10 title and getting Beanie re-injured in California does nothing to help the team win the Big-10.

Again, I am not saying that Tress tanks games--ever. I am saying that there may have been a "let's try this and if we lose a game we would rather it be a non-conference game" thinking going on. This is only my opinion... and I agree that a playoff is not good. I also do not want a 12th Big-11 team and a conference championship. Who wants a 2 loss Michigan state playing a no-loss Ohio State for the title and having the 2 loss team win..... that makes the conference weaker. I also hate the BCS and I like the old system of winning the conference as your goal, winning the bowl game, and letting the media figure out who the hell the national champion is at the end.

I'm also listed as probable, until Friday afternono when I'll again be returned to doubtful "if the game were played today".

tired of it.

This is great news. I was worried he'd be out the entire year after not playing against Troy.

I ditto Joe Fox's comment about Gopher fans. Holy freaking cow, they haven't played anybody, and now they're screaming bring on OSU? Be careful what you wish for.

As for the naysayers on a playoff. Please remember that every major sport has a playoff/tournament system, and is the only tried and true way to determine a national champion. And stow the stupid "but if an average team gets hot" and "playoffs are a crapshoot" bull-shiitake mushroom arguments. There is no way an "average team" gets into a playoff system in college football, and more talented teams will win, plain and simple (please review the 2006 and 2007 BCSNC games). I also believe this would encourage coaches to schedule tougher games OOC, in order to toughen their teams for the end of the year (ala Thad Matta).

Just my $.02.

ROTFLMAO!! Yeah, I know DeLaney is the biggest obstacle to a playoff, as well as the PAC 10 president, but playoffs are still the best way to crown a champ. :-)

PLEASE DON'T PLAY BEANIE! Not against the f'ing Gophers. If he re-injures his foot against another meaningless team and isn't able to play again when it matters, how would Tress ever live with himself?

I'm against this 100%. If we face a scare situation, are we really going to be running it much anyways? Herron looks good enough to get us through it in my opinion.

Dave N.:

I understand your point of view, but IMHO, Beanie is going to be better off going into the Wisconsin game with game time experience, and confidence in his ability to make cuts while getting hit in real time.

I have to say I think it's a good decision to get him into the game on Saturday. I'm not saying he should get 40 carries, or even 20, but I still think having him play some will be good for him, Pryor and the O-line.

Dave N on 24 Sep 2008 - 12:43am #

I guess if they start Herron and give Beanie carries late in the game (which is what it sounds like they're going to do anyways), I wouldn't have any objections. Pryor and Beanie definitely need to take snaps together. 10-15 carries max?

Yeah, I'd bet that'll happen. Unless he gets hurt again...JUST KIDDING!!! ;-)
