Beanie Won’t Play Versus Troy
In case you missed it, Tressel said today Beanie still isn’t ready to go and he won’t play until he is 100%.
It sounds as if he made some progress, but not enough to suit up this week.
Rehring also won’t play and might be out for awhile. Shugarts and/or Brewster will pick up the slack depending on who gets shuffled where to ‘compensate’ for Rehring’s absence.

Has there been any talk from the brass about a medical redshirt? It’d be a silver lining to this disappointing season if Beanie comes back in 2009
A medical redshirt might be in Beanies best intrest if he’s really going to miss significant time. Boom is progressing quickly, and after a full season…phew. Could you imagine the pony with Pryor, Boom, AND Beanie?!!? USC in the ’shoe would be quite different
Play or not, Beanie is eligible for the NFL draft after this year. No reason to redshirt him when he’ll be gone anyway. We need him to heal up for the Big Ten run and get what we can out of him.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d be pleased as punch if Beanie sticks around for another year. Sitting him now and getting two out of him – No Chance.
What are they hiding? Why don’t they just come out and say what exactly is wrong with him?
I’ll be looking forward to see the freshmen play. Here’s also hoping Pryor gets the nod… from here on out, not just next game.
I don’t know about Beanie leaving just yet, Brotherbuck. This year was supposed to be his showcase year. Last year was just a taste of things to come considering he was banged up the whole time. And you have to wonder how much his draft stock has dropped with all these injuries and missed games.
I think he feels he still has something to prove. Especially if this injury is far worse than they’re leading us to believe. I mean, you couldn’t possibly think he was going to play any time soon after the way he went down in the YSU game.
buckeyeski, I’ve heard of this “pony” you speak of but have not seen it one fucking time this year. When or If our coaches get their heads out of their ass I’m sure we will see Posey, Thomas, Pryor, Adams, Rolle, Sabino, etc. at some point in their careers. The problem is at Qb/ D coor. and Play Calling. You can fix QB fairly quickly with Pryor, D coach should go to Fickel or Speilman, and Play Calling should be easy with Pryor, Posey, Beanie(100%),Flash.
One more thing do you think they will ever let Robo run a crossing route? just saying!
Tampa speaks for the frustrated masses.
I’m thinking whatever is wrong with beanie was more than “a hurting foot issue” as Tress originally said. I hope he is ok for his sake. I wouldn’t want to see his draft status drop because of this.
Turf toe. With ligament damage.
Good chance we won’t see him until M*chigan or the bowl game.
I don’t think there’s any question Beanie’s injury problems are well known by the NFL, and it hurts his NFL draft stock. If he can’t stay healthy for one season in college football, how is he supposed to stay healthy for one season in the NFL?
OSU can afford to have him out against Troy, so hopefully, he’ll have enough time off to get better for the following game. It seems more and more obvious this is something he’ll have to deal with on a week-by-week basis. It may affect his decision at the end of the year to stay or go.
I personally don’t think Robo is tough enough to cross the middle. He is a great deep threat, but doesn’t have that toughness that our older receivers had. (Boston, Jenkins, Glenn) to name a few
There is an upside to this…… The coaching staff gets a chance to look at the backups and I am afraid that we are not seeing much out of Saine or Rasta Wells. Boom looks like he may be the real deal and I think the staff may ultimately figure out that Saine is more like a Reggie Bush type player than a true RB. They need to experiment lining him up in various places and just getting the ball to him and letting him run. He is at his best when he has “space” to run in. He may also prove to be good on kick returns. If Boom gets his groove going in Beanie’s abscence, then imagine what is in store for Miiiiiiiiiiiichigan when (and if) Beanie comes back. Pryor, Beanie, Boom, and Saine all lined up at the same time and the ball could be snapped anywhere and run by anyone…….. someone please spoon me!
LMAO @ spooning Mitch
Saine is just like Reggie Bush. Except for all of that electrifying, take-it-to-the-house and juke 5 guys stuff.
I meant that one of these babes should spoon me, but thanks for the thought!!! LOL

Any chance the start of this season is frustrating enough for Beanie that he decides to stick around for his senior year.
Friend of mine told me it’s a fractured foot – he won’t play this year. I don’t know why all the secrecy. Her source was her mom who is a nurse @ OSU
It’s not a fractured foot, it is torn ligaments in the big toe. He will probably be back for the Whisky game.
Why are people floating the idea of Fickell as defensive coordinator? He’s a Heacock student (crony) and he’d only continue this bullshit reactionary soft zone that’s costing us big wins and the program’s whole reputation. You want fat D-linemen who provide no pass rush and linebackers who cover almost as much as safeties do and hit like little girls? Then Fickell’s your man. We need new blood at both coordinator positions, anything less and it’s more of the same.
I’m sure it’s possible to have a difference in philosophy with your boss on some things. We all have at one time or another.
Remember, Pagac and that pin-your-ears-back style are what Fickell played under. As a grad assistant, he had a season with Tenuta and he was the defensive line and special teams coach under Dantonio.
So he has the foundation to kill.
“D coach should go to Fickel or Speilman”
Speilman would want to be somewhere in between the outside linebackers if he were coach. I’m down with that!
With Spielman, there’s always that fear that he’ll go Woody Hayes on a player, but maybe the mix of his heat with Tressel’s cool is a good combo.
They could good cop/bad cop the team all year long.
I’m fascinated by the notion that Spielman would be a good defensive coach at OSU. Anyone who watched the Destroyers during his tenure would be shaking their heads, too. Please.
“Saine is just like Reggie Bush. Except for all of that electrifying, take-it-to-the-house and juke 5 guys stuff.”
That is the funniest thing I’ve read this week. Gotta love good sarcasm.
I’m frankly glad to see Rehring sit, though I’m sorry to see him hurt. Lord, give someone else a chance. Anyone else. Anyone. Let a sack of rice flour have a chance. Anyone.
OSU’s in a heap of trouble if they come out the gate against Troy the way they did against OU. This Troy team is quick, and can score. If OSU plays flat, they’ll be beaten.
Earle was right: This is a big-time trap game.
Hey JF slight difference between Arena League and real football.
I have the utmost confidence that Spiels would be an outstanding d-coordinator. Let’s officially start the campaign on 11W to make the greatest Buckeye linebacker our next D-Coordinator! Who’s coming with me?!
Not D- Coordinator… he has no real experience to speak of (Columbus Destroyers doesn’t count)… definitely a good candidate for a D-Line coach…… his atttitude would be welcome and I am sure he would be happy to knock some of our lazy ass lineman on their butts.
I’d prefer Spielman over Fickell without question. I know some question Spielman’s experience but the man knows the x’s and o’s…he might play dumb jock on the radio but dude knows his stuff.
I see your point Kyle, but I have to side with JF here… I love Spiels as much as anyone, but he’s a risk. As a player and a true Buckeye – it doesn’t get any better…. As a coach – the resume’ is short and unimpressive.
Part of me says there is FAR TOO much talent on this team to take that big of a risk. I really want a proven coach with a solid resume’. The defensive coordinator job at tOSU should be and I have to believe is a posistion a lot highly talented people would consider.
That being said, there is no one that has more passion for the Buckeyes than Speils. I don’t think he’d go for the job unless he thought he could be successful – so if he thought he was the man for the job… I’d have to back’em! He would definitly be a fan favorite thats for sure.
Our defense gets along on talent (D-line withheld) alone. Playcalling has been terrible for past 5 years. We need someone to get some “fire” in their asses. Play with some passion past the 1st series of a game. This drives me crazy watching our team play like this.
75% of Miami Dolphin fans are now considering Ted Ginn Jr a first round bust.Beanie will probably be a bust also.
Spiels is a great cheerleader and embassador, a buckeye through and through, he was a helluva linebacker and he makes me laugh when I listen to him on my way home from work. However, to echo an earlier post, he has a weak coaching resume and NO college coaching experience. And sorry, a helluva linebacker does not necessarily make you a good coach.
He wanted the HC job when Coop was fired. When Tressel came on board he reached out to Spiels about a position on his staff to which Spiels declined. If his ego did not get in the way who knows, he maybe would be in the perfect position to take the job now.
Let’s take our scarlet colored glasses off for a second, if he was such a hot coaching commodity why hasn’t FLA, LSU and USC(insert school here) been trying to knock down his door to be their d-coordinator?
We need a proven commodity. It looks like Mike Stoops may be looking for a coordinator job very soon.
Jim – I was always under the impression that Spiels was approached for the head coaching job, but declined because he didn’t think he was the man to turn the program around…??? I could be WAY far off on that though…
I think a guy like Greg Mattison would be awesome! There is NO reason why that guy should be a line backer coach. NONE – Even if it is in the NFL. His age would suggest that the Ravens have NO intrest in promoting him any higher and his been successful EVERYWHERE hes gone.
If Spiels comes into play, have have him replace Fickell. He would fit perfect as a Co-Defensive Coordinator – Linebackers Coach. He’s also young enough to where he could easily be promoted if he is successful.
What about the other side of the ball though? Yea it would have been nice to hold USC to 21 points, but if our offensive can’t put up, who cares what our D stops?
I don’t think Spiels would take a coaching job right now. His passion for Ohio State is unmatched and I too love listening to him on the drive home. However, he is a family guy first and with his kids growing up, he wouldn’t be able to commit the time needed to coaching. The college season is about 11 months longer than the arena season and he seems to have a pretty good gig right now.
Kyle, while I may not be able to get behind your Spielman for D-coordinator right now (I need more experience), I will get behind the “Spielman as the Buckeye’s all-time TV sideline reporter” campaign. At least last Sa-turd-day, he would have given us some great laughs, similar to OU.
If Beanie isn’t going to play “until he’s 100%”, my amateur Kremlinology leads me to think what I thought last week (and also immediately after he went down vs. YSU): a medical redshirt is more likely all the time.
I mean, seriously – where did all the talk about Beanie last year go? Remember all that stuff about how he had to learn to suck it up and play even when he was a little banged up? That would seem to make it clear that Tress was perfectly willing to play a <100% Beanie week after week. Now, all of a sudden, he needs to be perfectly healthy to see the field.
Some of this – in each instance – is obviously obfuscatory Senator-speak. But at some point you have to wonder what message is being sent to what people, and whether it does more harm than good. For an unrelated example: the news that the Buckeyes were caught completely unawares by the LiC/TB rotation vs. USC. I don’t know about any of you, but if I was on a team and the coaches started swapping out QBs willy-nilly while we were having trouble moving the ball, and I didn’t know that they’d PLANNED to do that, I’d be thinking that they were in full-on panic mode. Maybe that had something to do with the spotty offensive performance and maybe it didn’t, but it damn sure couldn’t have been good for confidence and morale.
I’m not understanding all the talk about a medical red shirt for Beanie…. Saying this as if Beanie actually comes back for a senior year (which I think could be more likely with every game he misses) We are on crack if we think he comes back for a 5th year.
I agree J.B. there is no reason for Beanie to take a redshirt, he would simply come back for his senior year. After this injury, I wouldn’t be surprised if he leaves. His draft status may slip, but he still gets paid for being injured.
I guess what I meant to say is that I think it’s more likely with each missed game that he comes back next year. I’ve never believed that if he had a Heisman-winning or -finalist year that he’d be back next year despite his talk about playing all four.
The idea that he leaves after this year – whether he comes back strong late-season or doesn’t play at all – is wrong, though, I think. This isn’t an Adrian Peterson-type collarbone injury or a broken rib, etc…we’re talking about one of his wheels here. He probably needs (and wants) a good, solid, ENTIRE season as The Man under his belt if he’s gonna get what’s coming to him from the league.
“I don’t know about any of you, but if I was on a team and the coaches started swapping out QBs willy-nilly while we were having trouble moving the ball, and I didn’t know that they’d PLANNED to do that, I’d be thinking that they were in full-on panic mode.”
I disagree with the idea that the coaching staff was panicking. I think they reacted to having to decide very late in the week that Wells wouldn’t play and they had to alter the game plan last minute. Which explains why it was surprising to the team that Boeckman and Pryor shared so much playing time.
I think some of us could do a better job then the current d-coor. so why not #36? He will get these guys ready to play, and that is more then I can say for the current staff.
Beanie will be back when he is 100% healthy? What the hell is that Tressel? No shit, right. They better come out ready to hit somebody on defense for the rest of this year. Last thing If the d line can’t get any push up front you have to switch it up and go 3-4 at some point and shoot gaps.
Yo, Tom! What’s up, BRO? Seriously, glad to see you again. Sorry about all the Sat. night unpleasantness. Hopefully we can proceed in brotherly Buckeyedom. LOL.
Anyway: I wasn’t suggesting that the coaches were panicking. They probably SHOULD have been, but that’s not what I meant. I was saying that it was pretty clear from some of the comments from PLAYERS that they had no idea that that was the plan. Of course they put the best face on it that they can – for fuck’s sake, Alex Boone SAID HE THOUGHT THE O-LINE PLAYED WELL – but they obviously didn’t know that the rotation was planned, and that can’t have had any other effect than to have every PLAYER thinking WTF.
I take your point that the coaches may well have been rotating according to a late-formulated, Beanie-less game plan (which begs the question of why they didn’t have one ready already just in case), but why keep the PLAYERS in the dark about it? Doesn’t make sense.
JB: It would surprise me that he would be offered the HC job with absolutely no experience. They way I heard it was that he wanted the HC job, didn’t get it and then did not want to take a lesser role. But the real issue is where do we go with the d coordinator position. Mattison would be a good option. Stoops defenses were not to shabby at OU. He has the fire everyone seems to be looking for as well. Granted he has a job for now but I really don’t think he will for much longer.
And I agree we need a change but does anyone really think that any of us could go in and do better than Heacock?? Please….
Watched the 2003 OSU-NC State Triple OT game last night on BTN…though that defense gave up 38 pts (much of it in the OTs) to Philip Rivers and Jericho Cotchery, they played with a certain fire that made me jealous for those times.
How much is Sparty paying Dantonio? We could prob. match it, no? Bring him back as Def. Coord.? I know, I know, I am dreaming and he would never accept the demotion….sigh.
Also, watching the Krenzel play (even in a game that was well below his best) made me weep for Todd Boeckman. I was struck with how Krenz, despite having many less physical gifts than the Todd, was able to succede on pure heart and decision making alone. Man, could that guy roll out of the pocket and throw a ball away. Tear.
“Let’s take our scarlet colored glasses off for a second, if he was such a hot coaching commodity why hasn’t FLA, LSU and USC(insert school here) been trying to knock down his door to be their d-coordinator?”
Actually, Miami (Fla) tried to hire him before that other guy when Butch Davis left…
Spielman was definitely not offered the head coaching position. If I recall correctly, he even interviewed before Tressel. In the end, Geiger loved his fire but was unwilling to gamble on #36 with no previous head coaching experience. I think Geiger/Tressel did try to get Spielman in the mix as an assistant coach but he declined.
Krenzel was brilliant and made the best out of what he was given in any situation. He played with such poise and confidence, and his decision-making was sharp. He was a slightly-above average QB at best, but his intangibles make him a much, much, much, much better QB than Boeckman.
El Caballo de Sangre:
Hey no problem, BRO. ;-) I think the players were caught off guard because they didn’t practice much on the alternate game that accounted for Beanie being out of the game; again due to the decision being made late in the week. I think Tressel’s too organized not to be prepared for something like that. Just my opinion.
Sorry. The last comment at 1:22pm from 9/19 was mine.
