Matta Reportedly Adds Practice Body
With no real Juco’s left worthy of a scholarship, Thad Matta has reportedly added a walk-on formerly of Cincinnati Moeller in the form of 6′9″ J.J. Grycko.
Grycko played on Moeller’s 06′-’07 state title team averaging a paltry 4.1 points, according to Bob Baptist’s blog.
I’m glad it appears Matta is content to not waste a scholarship on an undeserving juco but I’m still worried sick about the lack of size and skill on the front line beyond Dallas and Mullens.
We all better pray Kecman can be a factor on the glass.

The lack of an inside bodies does worry me as well. This is going to put more pressure on Turner and Lighty to get some boards. We can not have the rebounding effort of last year carry into this season.

Mad-Dog better watch out before a walk-on takes his 5 minutes per game. Despite the rebounding issues, I think this team can still be dangerous. We’ve got some wing studs with Turner and Buford and a ton of perimeter depth. Turner/Buford are similar offensive players and I love that they can both get to the line or hit a midrange jumper as opposed to settling for 3’s. I just heard dude on 1460 raving about Buford. I still think there’s a chance Turner plays point with Buford, Lighty on wings and D-Dale / Mullens down low. That’s a pretty nice 5…I actually hope Matta keeps zone defense employed for large stretches again because we’ll be super long across the 3pt line depending on who’s on the floor.

This is going to be a perimeter and wing team, period. Mullens will help them inside - substantially, if he stays out of foul trouble - but they have little else to help him at the forward spot. They won’t have a “bigs” package, that’s for sure.
Nothing wrong with an extra warm body, and kudos to Matta for giving a chance to a walk-on to wear the scarlet and grey. Double kudos for not getting desperate and wasting a scholarship on someone who’s not right for the long-term interests of the program.

Next years basketball team should be soild. We need someone to step up at point. I think we will roll with a small but deadly team of buford, lighty, pj hill, turner, Mullens. That leaves up Dallas coming off the bench to spell mullens. I wish we could play them both at the same time but i dont see that as a good posibility
