Gholston is a Jet

The Big Apple is embracing guns

The New York Jets have selected Vernon Gholston with the 6th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Gholston will be going to a team that runs a 3-4, so he figures to get some looks at linebacker in New York. If he can make the adjustment and play up to the potential of his pipe size, the Jets will have one of the better young linebacker groups in the NFL. Former Wolverine David Harris had a monster rookie year, including a 20 tackle game.

Meanwhile, I remain baffled how the first two picks took 11 minutes. Seeing how each of those selections basically had contracts in hand before the draft.

  1. vilma is a saint. he’ll play along side calvin pace, their pickup from the cardinals.

the osu population is growing in the nyj organization. nuge, mangold, and now gholston.

Good catch on Vilma. My knowledge of NFL player transactions is sometimes limited to those that can help my fantasy team. :)

And you’re right, there are quite a few Buckeyes that are Jets now. Good to see the fans at the draft seemed to approve of the pick.

Peace out, career of Troy Smith. It’s been real.

Yeah, that pick doesn’t bode well for Smith’s future. Still, Flacco won’t be thrown out under center right away and Smith will get a chance to compete for the job.

Smith needs to hit up Derek Anderson for pointers.

  5. Its Smith’s Job untill Flacco Proves he is the real deal. Im sure if Smith played 1AA level comp. he would have been first round too. That fag dave is a buckeye hater and a michigan fan who has an axe to grind against troy. Hey dave go fuck yourself from the buckeye nation and my heart.

  6. It really pisses me off when people talk shit on troy smith. Have you seen one of his pro games or even one snap. He looked like baltimore’s best qb to me last year and he will improve.

  7. USC had as many first round selections as the entire Big Ten did.

Taking off the scarlet-tinged glasses, I see nothing special about this Flacco kid. You know who else lit up 1-AA? Armanti fucking Edwards. How good of a pro QB will he makes, Jaws and Herbie?

  10. By the way, Chad Henne mouthed his mothers cell phone number when he was being picked…

    610-413-6822

Tell her that Ohio State would have made him a first rounder…

Miami just crippled their franchise for years to come.

Two Michigan players in one day? I pity you, Miami fans.

  12. Chad Henne to Ted Ginn makes my heart cringe.

Good thing Miami doesn’t have to play Ohio State.

As for USC having more first round picks than the entire Big 10, check out next years draft.

    USC= 4 1st round & 3 2nd round picks

2 D-lineman and 1 linebacker in round 1 = 200yards for Beanie Wells next year

    2 O-lineman in 1st 2 rounds = 2+ sacks for Lawrence Wilson

I’m not sure the Flacco pick means the end of Troy’s career in Baltimore. The coaches see him in practice and meetings every day; we don’t. They’d have a better appraisal of his abilities than any of us would, particularly since we only saw him in season-end, mop-up duty.

They don’t have anyone on the roster other than Troy. The Boller experiment is obviously not working, so you know he’s not your starter. I am surprised they took Flacco over someone else, but I can understand why they think they need two quarterbacks for developmental purposes.

My Steelers picked up Dennis Dixon, so *this* will be interesting, to say the least.

Anyone else think it’s odd that Mike Hart hasn’t been drafted yet? I thought someone would have picked him up in the 5th simply because he DOES NOT fumble and could be dependable to fun out the clock without the risk of a fumble at the end of a game.

    Wil - April 27th, 2008 at 4:11 pm - #

  17. Wil

that should have been “run out the clock”

    Wil - April 27th, 2008 at 4:12 pm - #

  18. joe your talking out your ass. troy smith started 2 games last year. so that is quite a bit more than mop up duty ,although he looked great in that role. do alittle more watching of the games before you bash a former buckeye heisman winner. I’ll put money on the fact he’ll start for the ravens next year week one. IF he fail then we will see if its his fault or the fact that the ravens pretty much suck on offense. I was pumped about the steelers draft though. I like sweed and Dixon. Mendenhall will help push parker.

    tampa buckeye - April 27th, 2008 at 4:36 pm - #

  19. Ohhh, why did the teams in the NFL let the Steelers get Mendenhall? Man, there is no way J. Stewart will be a better RB than Mendenhall….

I’m a big Mendenhall fan, so I think the Steelers are going to get great stuff out of him. At least a serviceable backup to Willie Parker.

Mike Hart is a Colt. That could be a good fit for him.

Tampa Buckeye, I want to see Troy do good also….BUT the 2 games he started were an @$$ whooping the Ravens took from the Seahawks in week 16 and then they beat the Steelers’ 2nd stringers by 3 points in week 17

I think week 16 wasn’t that impressive and week 17 WOULD qualify ad mop up duty. That said, he is young and he IS a playmaker on gamedays….let’s just hope he gets his chance

    Wil - April 27th, 2008 at 4:51 pm - #

Jason, I noticed that 15 minutes after I’m picking on Hart he gets drafted onto 1 of the best 2 teams to fit his running style (the other being the Broncos).

I need to hold my tongue for 30 minutes everytime something pops into my head from now on.

good for Larry Grant on getting taken by the Niners.

  24. troy smith is a winner and for people who call themselves a buckeye fan tend to forget that. I think most current Ohio state fans are the bandwagon type.

    tampa buckeye - April 27th, 2008 at 10:12 pm - #

  25. Wil

Tampa Buckeye, some of us are just more realistic than others.

“I think most current Ohio state fans are the bandwagon type.”

The current “bandwagon” trend is to be a Buckeye hater….not fan.

I’m not sure which one of the guys (Chris, Jason, or Corey) said this:

“The Buckeyes are the Yankees of college football.”

But this statement is becoming more and more realistic every single day.

  26. people get tired of seeing the same team win all the time and that is understandable. You know Troy Smith will compete even harder now because of the addition of Flacco. My view is Smith has what it takes to not just be a starter but a star in the NFL. As a steeler fan i’d love to see him traded. Remember Steve Young, Farve never starter on the first teams they were with ask those teams now who was right(tampa, atlanta). I think if you look at both of those qb’s and compare just the arm type and the playmaker/winner mentality Troy is a clone of young/farve. Thats just my view of it. So if the ravens pass on Troy because the team sucks and they can’t block a tree then so be it. Troy can follow in the foot steps of Steve Young and Brett Farve. I Know of a team in Ohio that would love to have him.

    tampa buckeye - April 28th, 2008 at 1:18 pm - #

  27. Wil

The lack of blocking will actually benefit Troy……Flacco is a 6′6″ statue who ran 4.86 forty and has NO laterall movement. Troy needs to make his impression now; he needs to show that he can create when the pocket breaks down.
