I'm not sure what a Hoosier is, but I do know that a Hokie is entirely made up. Brief history lesson: Va Tech's mascot was a turkey or chicken of some sort, never really discerned and people would always call it 'A Hokey(Hokie) bird.' As in a weird or strange bird. Eventually they just dropped the 'bird' and it became the school mascot of the Hokie. But it is not actually a real animal.
And then there's the Razorbacks.
Biologists will admit that a a wild Razorback hasn't been seen in decades. The stuffed Razorback at my local bar is acutally a javelina.
But we do have feral pigs that terrorize the countryside, killing all kinds of domesticated animals until they are "harvested" by one of the local "hunters".

What the fuck is a Hoosier?
It's probably in the same family as a Biliken or maybe even a Hokie but I could be wrong

Ledcow - my first comment was spoken with a ton of sarcasm
Well now you've been educated about why that school has that mascot. Feel enlightened.
And a Hoosier is someone who owned a farm without slaves.

They are huge and scary.
So are the pigs.
So we have that going for us
(gawd I hate the SEC.)
