Today's Tempest In A Teapot

vestvisor.jpg"The jet? Oh, it's nice."

The WWL is playing up a report that the university self-reported an incident to the NCAA regarding Tressel taking former players Anthony Gonzalez and Stan White Jr. to see the Final Four earlier in the year.

The Vest was attempting to honor the two Academic All-Americans from last year's squad with a little ride on the private jet and some sweet seats. This occurred nearly 90 days after the guys had played their last game with the university, they had already signed with agents and were no longer considered student athletes at the school.

Sounds reasonable to me.

The NCAA thinks different. This is just another case of the byzantine irregularities that make up the organization's governing rules and ultimately shouldn't amount to much, but opposing fans will certainly have some fun.

Don't you just love the pre-bowl drama that seems to come around every year or so. Things could be worse, I guess.

I'm sure Tressel knew what he was doing and, well, what's the NCAA going to do about it? Make the Buckeyes forfeit all games that Gonzo or Stan White was a part of?

It's definitely a dumb rule, but where was the compliance office on this one? You'd think Tressel would say, "Hey, I'm gonna take Gonzo and Stan out to the Final Four," and someone would say "Hey, wait a minute." It's clear that someone knew this was a rules violation; where was this person before this happened?

What's depressing to me is that this MINOR violation gets equal coverage on ESPN with the 36 player suspension at Florida State.. and almost ZERO coverage on other major sports sites.

It just proves that ESPN is out to get us.

Sean, I agree. That's a pretty good question. As careful as the Vest is with everything else, you'd have to have figured that he would have bounced this off of someone.

It's good to be the King !!

Whenever I hear smack or smear regarding the Bucks, I consider it a great compliment to OSU and the team. When on top of the college football world or anywhere for that matter, it is a precarious perch.
Know that , there will always be those naysayers ( fill in the blank with your fav ; Corso, Mussberger, Larry Merchant, or any SEC fan...)

Then there will always be the wanna be's like those at ESPN who often report early and incorrectly, what will they do this year to work in a story about poor Maurice in the pokey ???

They'll probably say last time OSU won a title, it was with Maurice then go into a 1/2 hour special about him

As I see it neither of the "students" were under NCAA restrictions at that time sooooo, this is "much to do about nothing", just a few FRIENDS going to a Basketball game.
