BlogPoll Ballot: Week 5

Shakeup Saturday didn't make putting this ballot together easy. Big movement at the top with 2 PAC10 schools in the top 3, and the USF Bulls busting into the top 10 at #7. LSU still holds on to the #1 spot, though it can be argued that USC got a better win Saturday.

Newcomers this week are Arizona State (#18), Purdue (#21) and Kansas State (#24), while Clemson, Penn State and Alabama drop out.

As always, you can check the ballots of every voter and the final version is due Wednesday morning, so get your thoughts in by Tuesday night if you think we got it wrong.

1 LSU Excuse the Tigers for looking ahead to the Florida clash in their game against Tulane. --
2 USC Transitive relations run amok: Buckeyes and Trojans have one common opponent under similar circumstances. --
3 Cal Delivered at Autzen. There aren't many teams that have gone on to win it all without a brush with death along the way. UP3
4 Ohio State Picked to finish 3rd in the Big Ten?? UP3
5 Wisconsin All Bret Bielema does is win football games (career record 16-1). UP5
6 Oklahoma Young team didn't finish the game. This team is still dangerous. DOWN3
7 South Florida Off-campus venues can rock. Have to go to Rutgers in a few weeks, but get Cincy and Louisville at home. UP9
8 Boston College Squeaked by UCONN - but got the all-important victory. UP4
9 Kentucky Steele pegged them 6th in the SEC East. Rich Brooks can flat out coach. UP8
10 Florida Caught looking ahead to LSU, or does Tommy Click-Clack have Meyer's number? DOWN6
11 West Virginia Evidently the Greatest Window Dressing on Earth. Every year WVU is the darkhorse media darling and every year they slip up. DOWN6
12 Oregon One huge break away from perhaps being ranked as high as 3rd. DOWN3
13 Missouri Had a bye week before trip to Lincoln. --
14 South Carolina The OBC is lurking. Don't count him out if the upsets continue. UP4
15 Georgia The Dawgs have looked good outside of the South Carolina game. Travel to Knoxville this weekend. UP4
16 Virginia Tech Gotta take a hit for barely slipping past a bad UNC team. DOWN1
17 Cincinnati Who'd have thought it would be the Bearcats instead of the Mountaineers lighting it up in the Big East? UP5
18 Arizona State We risked losing 25% of our commenters if we passed on Erickson's pups again. NR
19 Hawaii Colt threw a career-high 5 interceptions, but they keep winning. UP2
20 Rutgers Lost to a bad Maryland team at home. Looking ahead to the Bearcats? DOWN9
21 Purdue They're still unbeaten, but get a big test out of the Buckeyes this weekend. NR
22 Miami Followed up the A&M spanking with a mediocre performance against Duke. UP2
23 Kansas State Picked McCoy off 4 times in a convincing win in Austin. NR
24 Texas Mack Brown may want to practice special teams coverage before the Oklahoma game this week. DOWN16
25 Michigan State Can't punish Sparty for losing a nail-biter to the #5 team at their place. --

DROPPED OUT: Clemson (#14), Penn State (#20), Alabama (#23)

"Evidently the Greatest Window Dressing on Earth. Every year WVU is the darkhorse media darling and every year they slip up."
The media always ranks them high because of their cake schedule. The logic goes like this: "WVU is a light-weight team, but they'll probably go undefeated because they don't play anyone. Hence, we should rank them high." If you ask me, the Big Least should get the Boise State treatment.

Not sure about BC. That was 1AA (football championship subdivision, if anyone cares) UMass that didn't even have Marcus Camby playing. Of course, they could have been looking ahead to the mighty BG Falcons this week.

Oklahoma still at 6? Really? So they can lose to Colorado and drop three slots, but Florida loses to Auburn and they drop six? I don't see the logic.

I think we were a little harder on Florida for losing in the Swamp while Okla was at least on the road. This was the hardest week to reconfigure the rankings after all the losses. We struggled moving everybody up just because they were undefeated. I mean, BC's ahead of Florida to, but I think UF would likely kick their ass head to head...maybe we subconsciously punished UF a little more for "other" reasons.

Good point. We also talked about how this was basically a young Oklahoma team that just didn't finish the win. They learned a hard lesson about playing the full 60.

I still think Oklahoma could beat any of the teams behind them, but this is what the BP is all about - listening to feedback.

Where should we put them? What about BC?
