We all know that no school has doubled up with championship trophies in football and hoops in the same year, but no school has even turned the trick in a gap of less than eight years. Wendell Barnhouse of the Star-Telegram breaks it down:
| School | Football | Basketball | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Michigan | 1997 | 1989 | 8 |
| Ohio State | 1968 | 1960 | 8 |
| Florida | 1996 | 2006 | 10 |
| UCLA | 1954 | 1964 | 10 |
| Stanford | 1926 | 1942 | 16 |
| Michigan State | 1952 | 1979 | 27 |
| Arkansas | 1964 | 1994 | 30 |
| California | 1920 | 1959 | 39 |
| Syracuse | 1959 | 2003 | 44 |
| Maryland | 1953 | 2002 | 49 |
Of course, we respectfully disagree with his assessment that "The task for Ohio State is more difficult" when breaking down the two teams that have very real shots to accomplish this double feature this season, but we digress..

I guess it depends on what poll they used when doing the story, because the mighty Buckeyes won national titles in 1954 and 1957.
yeah, apparently they aren't counting the AP, UPI or Football Writers. Don't forget the 1961 title the university claims as well.
Even if you only use the two major polls, Ohio State won the AP title in '54.
