Former Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe delivered a great essay some time back about why most college kickers are awful. Basically, it's because head coaches don't value/understanding punting and kicking.
Indiana's coach, Kevin Wilson, is apparently one of those coaches. From HoosiersFlash.com:
Indiana's punters and kickers have been less than impressive this season. PK Aaron Del Grosso has yet to make a field goal and ranks third from the bottom in the Big Ten in average yards per kickoff, and P Erich Toth ranks last in the league with 29.2 yards per punt. The Hoosiers, however, don't actually have a coach who works on technique with either player, and Wilson says the kicking game is more "mental" than anything else. IU, by the way, hasn't had a coach who worked with punters or kickers for years, and don't plan on adding one.
Indiana reportedly made $25,500,000 last year off BTN revenues alone. The Hoosiers lost on Saturday to the MAC's Bowling Green, 45-42.
